That's So Gay! Microaggressions and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community (Perspectives on Sexual Orientation and Diversity) 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) experience subtle forms of discrimination, also known as microaggressions. Microaggressions are commonplace interactions that occur in a wide variety of social settings, including school or the workplace, among friends and family, and even among other LGBT people.

These accumulated experiences are associated with feelings of victimization, suicidal thinking, and higher rates of substance abuse, depression, and other health problems among members of the LGBT community.

In this book, Kevin Nadal provides a thought-provoking review of the literature on discrimination and microaggressions toward LGBT people. The generous use of case examples makes the book ideal for gender studies courses and discussion groups. Each case is followed by analysis of the elements involved in microaggressions and discussion questions for the reader to reflect upon.

This book includes advice for mental health practitioners, organizational leaders, educators, and students who want to adopt LGBT-accepting worldviews and practices. It has tips for how to discuss and advocate for LGBT issues in the realms of family, community, educational systems, and the government.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book could enlighten undergraduate and graduate students in any social science field (e.g., psychology, sociology, counseling), as well as the general public. Guidance such as that offered in the closing chapter, focusing as it does on what the reader can do, should be a part of more journal article, as well as book. That’s So Gay! is a significant contribution to the literature that holds the potential to have a lasting impact on professionals and on the lay public.” - PsycCRITIQUES®

From the Back Cover

This engagingly written book describes experiences of microaggressions, or subtle forms of discrimination, toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Nadal provides an overview of the current research literature on microaggressions and their impact on physical and mental health, and reviews discrimination towards LGBT individuals throughout history. He also examines how microaggressions may manifest in families, the workplace, health care environments, the media, school systems, and society at large. Ideal for gender studies courses, this book is replete with real life case examples and questions to foster discussion. It offers practical guidance on how to identify and deal with microaggressions as they occur, as well as implications for policy and clinical practice.

The use or non-use of language, written or otherwise, in our rapidly changing culture can result in misunderstanding, internalized trauma, and violent responses from traditionally marginalized groups struggling for social justice and equality. What may seem like an innocent comment may be received as something hurtful in light of past experiences. This book explores the need for all of us to examine our use of language and to strive towards being respectful towards others in our vastly diverse society.
