Microbial Burden: A Major Cause Of Aging And Age-Related Disease Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 62 ratings

More than 100 years ago, the major causes of death were infectious-related. However, over the past 100+ years, deaths related to infectious disease have been dramatically reduced. So can we say that the war against infectious disease is over?

Definitely not! Humans are completely outnumbered by microbes, including bacteria and viruses, by at least 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 to 1! Our existence is under constant microbial attack, and eventually, our immune system can't properly handle this challenge. Infectious microbes enter and live inside us, where they cause insulin resistance, inflammation, telomere shortening, and oxidative stress, four major theories about why we age. In addition, microbial burden is involved with the major causes of death in 2016, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes. We haven’t eliminated infectious disease, we have merely delayed it!

This book will present evidence that supports the hypothesis that microbial burden is a major cause of ageing and age-related disease. Also, how can we fight back? Microbes can enter us through the gut, skin, and mouth. Evidence about how to optimally fortify these barriers is presented.

The technical details were lost on me. I almost gave up on the book; I’m glad I kept with it. The information given on good ph levels in soaps & lotions, along with a list of foods having the needed Spermidine content ... and how these act as protection of our defense system as we age, and why, is very useful.

My personal passions are health, fitness and particularly, longevity. I read books and articles on the subject. I also listen to a lot of podcasts. From my perspective, the microbiome is not given the coverage it deserves.

This is a terrific book that describes in detail the war that going on in our bodies and what you can do to tip the balance in your favor. All of the studies are referenced and key diagrams are reproduced.

Most of this book is written for a technical audience. I am not a medical professional. So, I had to spend the time to Google some the new words in order to make it through the book. If you have a science background, you can do it. The recommendations at the end of the book are very easy to read and understand.

Definitely worth every penny I spent. Highly recommended.

I write popular reader books on the microbiome so when I read this book I was blown away. The author got it right and then brought it forward with even more information and logical conclusions. The book is written in a scientific manner which I have no problem with (in fact prefer). I started to highlight important passages but stopped when I realized I was highlighting most of the book. Want to be on the cutting edge of scientific understanding about our bodies and the mind-body connection then read this book. There is one point in this book I disagree with which is on protein. I don't believe the conclusion is causal. This review written by a competitor author who wishes he wrote this book. (Intended as high praise.)

I enjoyed this book and found it to have practical ideas I've never seen anywhere else in the health world. And it manages to avoid the problems of typical health books by being direct, referenced, and visual.

It also finally convinced me I should stop procrastinating on monitoring my microbiome, something I hadn't understood the immediate benefit of before.

An interesting new perspective and framework on the sources and mechanisms of chronic subclinical grade microbial infections, how they accelerate different ageing processes, methods for tracking markers of microbial burden and interventions for optimising these markers for maximal disease risk reduction.
