The AVR microcontroller from Atmel (now Microchip) is one of the most widely used 8-bit microcontrollers. Arduino Uno is based on AVR microcontroller. It is inexpensive and widely available around the world. This book combines the two. In this book, the authors use a step-by-step and systematic approach to show the programming of the AVR chip. Examples in both Assembly language and C show how to program many of the AVR features, such as timers, serial communication, ADC, SPI, I2C, and PWM. A decent textbook for microcontroller programmign for beginbers

It is a very good introductory textbook for micro controller programming with elements of introduction to processor and peripheral architecture. It can be used very effectively while leveraging abundant availability of Microchip's Atmega micro controllers that are marketed to hobbyists as Arduino Uno and thus available to students and colleges at very competitive prices. It does use professional programming environment of AVR Studio (free software) and not Arduino sketches. The book is written very well, and comes with a decent PowerPoint slide support from the books website. As an instructor I would love to see a little more in depth introduction of microprocessor architecture but I am still happy to work with what I got. The book is written so that one can decide and put more emphasis on use of assembler or on use of C when exploring the architectures of micro controller built-in peripherals. The book also provides excellent content support for interfacing push-buttons, keypads, LEDs, LED displays, LCD display using Epson protocol, DC motors, and stepper motors. It also contains all needed excerpts from the datasheets. All in one place and for a very decent price for students. It can be paired with a Arduino micro controller kit (available from Amazon) as shown in the attached photograph. The book does not include the kit itself.

I got this book for class, and though I haven't gone through all of the books chapters, it's very easy to pick up what it's trying to teach. For anyone that's in the engineering field and not a computer science kind of person, this book within my class is how I began to really understand how programming works and helped me get used to using both Assembly and C at a decent level.

The physical quality of the copy I got was also pretty good. Very legible with seemingly no major flaws in the printing.

I have found this to be useful and well written. I have not found any serious grammatical errors in the text or discrepencies with page numbering as a few others mentioned ( I have the Kindle edition ). There are many code examples and figures, and at times it seems like almost too much detail. My copy does not have an active table of contents but it is still fairly convenient to navigate. I would definitely consider buying other books by the same authors, in fact I am looking at their text on Atmel/ARM programming.

I have found numerous errors. Fortunately, I am able to catch them and make the corrections, but some people may not be as fortunate.

There's plenty good here, but plenty outdated. It's pretty obviously self-published since the page numbers aren't even close to right. I'd guess it's the old 8051 book with AVR stuff chopped in. It doesn't have an index at all (not that it'd be that useful without proper page numbers). I've learned plenty from it, but the errors I'm aware of make me always uncertain of the other information in the text and I find myself distrustful without myself checking a datasheet or other authoritative source.

So bad that obvious errors were uncorrected: page numbering goes 422 to 647 then 674 to 469, something so obvious that a reputable publisher would never have missed and released it. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 only because it does contain some useful information and doesn't have any direct competition.

As a non-computer science grad I find the book very accessible - chapter 0 (online) is a very well written intro to computing in general. The book has many well worked examples. and the C programming section will very much come in handy. A small criticism is the lack of an index, so I have to create my own. Otherwise a super book on assembly and AVR.

And it reads great, clear and concise, comprehensive overall and lots of good examples. Step by step one get into the more complex topics and Assembly code. I like this approach and being a non-native speaker it was quite easy for me to grasp its content. Bought it particularly because of Assembly, but also the C part is great, although I already apply C programming for many years already - not only in my many Arduino, IoT and Raspberry Pi projects ...

I love this book. Well done and I definitely recommend it as a very profound intro text into Assembly and C programming for Atmels' AVRs. Thumbs up! Both!

There are very few books about assembly programming for AVR microcontrollers, and a lot of those that exist are poorly written. This book is different. It's the only book you'll ever need if you want to learn AVR assembly language. Examples are very well explained, and provided side by side with their C counterparts, which makes them even easier to understand if you already have programming background. Also, the book provides a lot of detailed information about how the microcontrollers work internally, so it teaches you not only about software, but also about hardware. Highly recommended!
