Microplane Premium Classic Zester Graters
A versatile must-have tool for the kitchen!
This tool is normally used to grate citrus for perfect lemon, lime, and orange zests or to create pillowy mounds of parmesan cheese. However, it is also a great tool for grating spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and even chilies into fresh ground powders. If your dish requires fresh grated ginger or garlic, this tool will do that job as well. Customers have let us know that they even use this tool to remove burnt edges from cookies and bread. What will you use it for?
What is the difference between Original Classic and Premium Classic?
The Premium Classic Zester Grater by Microplane provides a soft touch handle, instead of hard plastic. In addition this line provides a choice of handle colors. You can expect the same grating or zesting experience with either tool.
Why is Sharper Better?
- Food is grated or zested without ripping or tearing which improves the look of the final dish
- Food is grated or zested without bruising which improves flavor and aroma
- Less pressure is required while grating - making the task faster and more efficient
What makes Microplane so sharp?
Do Chef's use Microplane?
- The Microplane is the standard for sharp, efficient grating and zesting in both home and professional kitchens - just ask any chef if they use a Microplane! Dining out anywhere will usually lead to a Microplane sighting.
Photo-etching and surgical grade stainless steel
Microplane began using this signature technology in the 1990's. Most tools use stamped or cut metal. Photo-etching creates a much finer point, which means your Microplane digs in and performs better.
Made in USA blades
The photo-etching process takes place in Russellville, Arkansas; the grating blades for zesters are all made in USA.

Great tool for getting fresh citrus essence into your recipes without a noticeable texture. I have used it on lemons, limes, and oranges. The sharp micro blades glide smoothly over the fruit, removing only the thinnest, outermost layer of the skin where the best flavor is, while leaving behind the deeper, more bitter part of the rind. I love it as a zester!
When grating hard cheeses like Parmesan, It yields a fine, soft, fluffy mound of cheese that melts quickly onto hot foods. For this reason, I sometimes prefer a coarser grater for cheese, though this will get the job done, and might be preferred in some situations.
I like that it comes in a fun choice of colors. I started with the yellow one for myself and have since gotten the green to give as a gift. The protective storage sleeve is a huge plus. Just give it a gentle squeeze, and the zester slides right in, protecting the delicate blades and you!
I have noticed with use that the metal parts on the handle have tarnished slightly like silver might, but it is hardly noticeable, and certainly not a deal breaker for me. Though I have put it in the dishwasher a few times, I usually just give it quick, stout spray with hot water to clean it.
When I decided to remove the sticker that was on the sleeve, it did not remove cleanly, so that will require a little work now. In retrospect, I probably would just leave that on.
A great product overall, and I highly recommend it for any well-equipped kitchen!
One little flaw, however, prevents me from giving it five stars. When I used it to grate lime zest today, it accumulated on the underside of the zester, as many food items do. Never expecting a problem, I used my index finger to wipe it off into the bowl. YOWWWww! The sides of the zester, which curl around to the back, were not finished. One of them gave me a very nasty slice across the end knuckle of my index finger. The last brand of microplane zester was finished smoothly, so it never occurred to me that this might be a problem. In the future, I'll be sure to use a pastry brush or the tip of a dinner knife to dislodge the grated item. Lesson learned!
Here is what I found.
They are all using the same blade-made in USA but assembled in Mexico.
The designs differ. Professional is more auqare like many graters we have used from before. It is not super eye catching. The premium and classic series has that long lean body that everyone recognizes easily to be super special to microplane.
Furthermore,Premium and classic series come with plastic handles and several reviewers complain they broke if you are too forceful. The professional series are made of all stainless steel all over.
Also, the premium and the classic series differ in two things. First, at the end where it stands on the counter top, the premium comes with two tiny plastic foot, you cannot see front the pic, but they are there while the classic does not. It protects the surface of either your countertop or your mixer bowl. If you use the classic series, you might scratch the surface it comes in contact with and the classic might be easier to slip too. Second, the plastic handle is sturdier in the premium series than the classics. Other than these two, they are basically the same design.
At the end, my sturdiness ranking is 1. professional 2. premium 2. classic.
my attractiveness of its outlook ranking is 1. premium 2. classic 3. professional.
But the attractiveness is more subject to individual taste than sturdiness ranking.
My final decision is to keep the professional series made of all stainless steel for my friend who care less about the look and for me, I will stay with the premium series and its color handles. I will make sure to be super careful and not use too much force. One more note, I ordered the yellow but the yellow is not a bright yellow , it is more of a dull saturated yellow. So if you like bright lemon yellow, this is not the color for you.
