Citrus zesting:
Great tool for getting fresh citrus essence into your recipes without a noticeable texture. I have used it on lemons, limes, and oranges. The sharp micro blades glide smoothly over the fruit, removing only the thinnest, outermost layer of the skin where the best flavor is, while leaving behind the deeper, more bitter part of the rind. I love it as a zester!

Cheese grating:
When grating hard cheeses like Parmesan, It yields a fine, soft, fluffy mound of cheese that melts quickly onto hot foods. For this reason, I sometimes prefer a coarser grater for cheese, though this will get the job done, and might be preferred in some situations.

I like that it comes in a fun choice of colors. I started with the yellow one for myself and have since gotten the green to give as a gift. The protective storage sleeve is a huge plus. Just give it a gentle squeeze, and the zester slides right in, protecting the delicate blades and you!

I have noticed with use that the metal parts on the handle have tarnished slightly like silver might, but it is hardly noticeable, and certainly not a deal breaker for me. Though I have put it in the dishwasher a few times, I usually just give it quick, stout spray with hot water to clean it.

When I decided to remove the sticker that was on the sleeve, it did not remove cleanly, so that will require a little work now. In retrospect, I probably would just leave that on.

A great product overall, and I highly recommend it for any well-equipped kitchen!

Microplane zesters are worth the money, period. I have had one for ten years. It zests and grates like the day I received it (it was a gift). Since then, I have bought a few for friends, and have always received compliments.

Previous to my Microplane zester, I just used a peeler for zesting citrus or or grating nutmeg. I thought it was adequate. It was a bit tedious and hazardous, but I zested so infrequently, it didn't seem like a big deal.

After the zester, I used it to add zesting to a lot of foods I make everyday: salads, pancakes, crepes, lemonade, tapenade, relishes, roasted meats and desserts. The zesting dresses up the flavor in even simple desserts like apple crisp. It is simple to clean up: usually a hot water rinse will do it.

This zester comes in such a cheerful color. The handle is comfortable and sturdy. It is dishwasher safe, although I usually just wash by hand, as it is so simple.

I have been buying Microplane graters for several years now and never been disappointed. I've tried graters by many other manufacturers, and none, that I've found come close. I can't understand why no other manufacturer has tried to copy Microplane. When you first use a Microplane grater, you then immediately gather your other manufacturers graters and throw them out! WARNING The Microplane graters work just as well on your fingers as they do on any other foods.

Our previous zester had a plastic handle and the actual grater section was framed in plastic. After a couple of uses on lemons and limes, it broke. The Microplane cost twice as much as our old one, but is a thousand time more durable. The handle is comfortable and the entire grating section is metal. There's almost a rugged feel to this zester which screams quality. I would say that we'll buy this again, but I don't think we'll need to.

First off, and most importantly, the zester/grater is unbelievably good with hard cheeses, such as reggiano parmesan. The grater shreds the cheese to a fine consistency unmanageable by other tools. Zest created by the grater is perfect, and of an even texture. The grater is very comfortable to hold, and the grip works well, even for left handers. It is, however, important to note that the grater can be difficult to clean (especially of zest) and that it is extremely sharp, with no safety features except for the one between your ears.

For the price, this little gadget cannot be beat. It is sharp, honed, and effective. Best of all, it grates incredibly easily with application of minimal pressure. I have not shredded my knuckles even once. It rinses clean quickly, even when used for zesting citrus. I also love the color, and it is very easy to find in my overflowing gadget drawer. The protective shield is a little tricky to put back on. Due to the sharpness, I would recommend being very careful when using this device around children. Treat it like a knife or an other dangerous object and keep it well out of their reach.

I am not a cook & this is definitely a first use of a microplane, so I am not sure what makes a superior one over another. All I know that this works well and is convenient. I have used it for zesting citrus, makes quick work of ginger (semi-frozen) which I always hated doing by hand, chocolate fluff that I needed to use as hair for a cake decoration, nutmeg & everything I have thrown at it it has handled well with the exception of garlic (hence the * deduction). Maybe I need to work with it a little more to see if it is my technique, but for now I prefer to mince with a knife. Not that this cannot handle the job, but I get rather a mushy sticky mess sticking to the back of the grater that one has to take care in grating the tiny little clove... it is just as fast & less messy to mince it the old-fashion way, even with poor knife skills with the added bonus of getting the right size mince/dice ;)

I am happy that I made this purchase. I like being able to whip this out of the drawer instead of having to reach up into the cupboard for the grater & then trying to dust off all my small bits stuck on the inside of the grater, sometimes cutting a knuckle or two. ince I am more apt to use this I don't skip small little things like adding a zest, etc & food is coming out tastier. It has earned it's keep in a small kitchen with someone who is not much of a cook. I am starting to use it so much (when I cook) it just may get a coveted spot hanging up on the wall!
