Twenty five years ago the Microplane Zester Grater was born. This slim line 40001 rasp style zester grater was born in the woodshop and brought to the kitchen. After making an orange cake, a key customer asked us if we could repackae our wood rasp into a zester grater because it made the perfect zest. Since then the Microplane grater zesters have taken the category by storm. This original classic zester doesn't have a handle, but it is the most used zester for chefs. The stainless blade is made in the USA. The original classic zester is 100% stainless, dishwasher safe.

perfect for hard cheese

I purchased the same thing about 30 years ago when the plane made the transition from carpentry to kitchen - it cost me $30 in those days and after so many years of use and abuse it finally was time to replace it - this one is exactly the same thing as the one of 30 years ago, just at 1/3 of price - what a bargain!
There are many shapes and sizes but this is the original, perfect for hard cheese, nuts, garlic, onion and so many others ... easy to wash, no cuts from the sides and no aromas left behind - Microplane is still THE grater to buy and from them all, this simple one is the most multi purpose and best value out there ... enjoy
Update July 18-2018: I noticed that few from the reviews have been disappointed from a lack of a handle. This design is best if the grater is placed flat on top of a bowl, plate, etc.; This way you have best position for grating (the most force without pushing hard) and the safest for your fingers. I do have a few with handles but those need to be either hand held or leaning on something (the cutting board, plate, etc.) which means I grate with my arm at an angle, my arm gets tired, I need to push more that I should which means that I could get nipped by the grates - so I love the simple and safe design

This product arrived with an adhesive sticker stuck on top of another adhesive sticker that were placed on the grates. These are not the easy-peel that might make sense on a rough surface that will be used for food processing. They are the old fashioned paper labels with adhesive on the back. I soaked the grater for an hour and adhesive remains. I don't want to use a chemical to remove the residue because this is an item used for processing food. I did sterilize the non-labeled end to try out the grating quality; it grated ginger root well enough, but was difficult to clean after use. The quality of the steel is ok, but not great.

I'm annoyed enough to send it back, but I resent the waste of my time. If I'd had the time to spend in the first place, I'd have gone to the local kitchen shop and chosen one.

This is the second microplane I have purchased from t his company. My mother loved my first one so much she took it. I'm not sure how I survived a year without it but I finally got another one and I can't believe I've gone a year without it! It's fabulous.

It takes just the very top of the rind, without any pith. The blades are VERY sharp and using it is pretty much effortless. It's quite flat so it's easy to store because it doesn't take up much room. It comes with a clear hard plastic sleeve for safe storage.

For those reviewers who complained about there not being a handle so there is a "safety issue"... How the heck are you less likely to scrape your knuckle just because there's a handle? I have had NO problems using this zester. There is no slipping, no knuckle-scrapage. Just use it carefully, there is a risk involved in using ANYTHING sharp, including a pencil. This is a great product, don't complain because you are careless or don't know how to use a microplane.

With sharp teeth you will find this tool indispensable for grating hard cheese, chocolate, shallots, garlic, ginger, onion, radishes, horseradish as well as zesting limes, lemons and oranges. I have not noticed any dulling, and I do use it for nutmeg which can dull the blade. You may want to own a separate grater if you grate a lot of whole spices.

If you have used the model 40020 Microplane Zester-Grater with the black plastic handle, this handle-less version can take some getting used to. The 40020 has rounded edges and I found that some foods tend to collect in the underside edges, which is why I recently purchased this model. The edges are squared and do not trap food.

Important Note: the Microplane breaks down hard cheese into very light, feathery shards that weigh less than cheese grated on a box or rotary graters when measured by volume. One ounce of parmesan grated on the fine holes of a box grater yield ½ cup of grated cheese; one ounce grated on a Microplane yields ¾ cup of grated cheese. So when following a recipe use the recommended weight of the hard cheese. If the amount is given by volume, increase it by half using a Microplane.

Yes, it is true. This high quality item is actually made in the United States Of America!
I gave it 5 stars because I like things that are well made and perform the task that they
were designed to do and do it well.

But wait, that's not all! Not only does it work as intended, it is inexpensive, and simple to use.
It does work better for zesting or shreding some foods and ingredients better than others but
that may just be a matter of learning how to hold and manipulate the tool for that item.
I said that it was easy to use and it is, but you do have to find out the best way
to hold it to fit your own hand size or the task you are preforming. Use it 2 or 3 times
and you're a Pro.

For the money, and the free shipping possiblity, and crazy good way that it shaves
off parmesan and romano cheeze,go for it!

Don't worry about hurting yourself, it is no more dangerous than a sharp knife or a pot
of boiling water. It comes with a very durable plastic guard/storage cover that protects
the sharpness of the tool and your hands.

Damaged product - twice - and terrible packing

I had to return the first microplane I got as it was damaged with scratches. The second one also had these, which comes as no surprise since the company doesn't put any protective covering on the microplane itself other than some cheap plastic on one side. I would expect this for a £2 product, but a £15 product better have good protective covering.

In addition, the company chose to place stickers on the microplane itself which if improperly removed leave glue residue that may contaminate food. It took me a good half hour at least to clean the residue off, which isn't acceptable for something that is of this price and supposed quality.

The plane is rather unwieldy on its own. I can't recommend this product for this price, it is absolute robbery.

I have seen chefs on TV using these for a while and you just can not get them on the high street well not mine anyway and I just had to have one. This is a zesters dream, not only does it remove all the zest from your citrus fruits and all of it - it does it without removing the pith. And no more zesting your fingers or knuckles like when using those nasty box graters.

I have also used it on garlic and hard cheese with good results, and it cleans up with no fuss.
A foodies dream present as it makes cooking less stressful if you have the right tools for the job. Definitely will recommend.
