I bought two books on how to use MS FSX... so far, I like it quite a bit. Not being a gamer, but instead learning to fly airplanes I'm still trying to figure the two out. I don't know if it's MS FSX or the joystick, but when I intend to pitch up, moving the joystick back, which logically to me would be the equivalent of applying back pressure, (pulling back on a yoke) thus the nose of the plane would ideally point upward, away from the ground. Instead, the opposite occurs.
I want the nose to point up when I pull back, point down when I push forward.
Hopefully, this can be re-programmed. This takes a pretty long time to load. It is more than 13 GB. (Thirteen) The newer, faster, better graphics your PC has the better, (surprise, surpise.) Myself, I set up a practice flight with relative ease, but I can't get the plane to do anything else at this point. There's no response to any given action but the Esc key to leave the program. I can't get the plane to do anything yet. It won't move.
I can get an ATIS report, so that's pretty cool. Good practice. But now, I have to reference one of the books, purchased separately, to find out what to do now.
It looks as though it promises to be pretty good. It's fairly inexpensive. I would buy it if I didn't already own it. Come to think of it. I do have more than one computer. So, maybe, just maybe I'll see how this goes and perhaps buy another copy. The software does have to be authorized, and just how limited it is in use should a user put the same disc from the same package onto a second computer?
I'll never know unless someone writes about it and I happen to see it, or if someone tells me. I'm not gonna bother. It's not that expensive, and loading is time consuming, it might be against the law; I'm not gonna mess with that.
So far I'm happy with this. Personally, if you want to use this as a training aid, you can't go wrong BUt be advised, on top of anything or everything else, the learning curve can be steep. Lots of factors and variables. Good luck. I hope this has been useful to you in your decision making.

UPDATE........ A FSX SERVICE PACK (SP1) HAS BEEN RELEASED FOR FSX. THE PROGRAM RUNS A LOT BETTER NOW. BUT STILL THE PROGRAM OVERALL, IS A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT.....
*****************************************
I had been looking forward to getting FSX Deluxe (FS10) and finally puchased it through my most favorite internet retailer, AMAZON. I was not disappointed with their super service.
I have a pretty "hot" desktop computer, so installation of the program via the DVD's went smoothly and I was able to set the program "sliders" moderately high (the "sliders" adjust the "realism" of Flight Simulator to a level that matches the ability of your computer). If there is any "game" which pushes the boundaries of your computer to the maximum. it has always been the latest version of Flight Simulater. FSX continues that philosophy.
But I generally found FSX a bit disappointing, although it's generally quite a nice program. Scenery, aircraft, 3D panels, etc. have all been bumped up a few notches in quality, but I find that it is not a major improvement over FS2004. I was hoping for a working FMC (Flight Management Computer) and a much improved flight planner in this version but no such luck (third party designers have been selling FMC equipped cockpits for FS for years now...why not Microsoft?).
Yes, I'll grudgingly switch over to FSX, but be annoyed at the disappointingly small amount of improvements (for my money).
For example, I took off in the Cessna at SW International Airport in Fort Myers, Florida for a vfr flight down to my home town of Naples, Fl. This area of Florida has built up rapidly (too rapidly, in fact) over the years..lots of high rises on the gulf, and wall to wall housing developments, congested cities.... Yet the scenery appeared as if I were flying over the African savannah..mostly grassy plains, scattered clumps of palm trees and empty beaches..totally unrealistic. It looked like I could go on safari if I landed,(instead of getting caught in a traffic jam!).
All in all, a fair program, but a bit of a disappointment for this old flight simmer.
I had to purchase 700 dollars in additional hardware for my computer just to run this program. (New high-end video card, new ram, new power supply to run the video card) If you don't have an 8800 chipset video card with at least 512 or memory, at least 2 gig of ram, and the power to run these things, it's disappointing. (I have a highspeed ATA hard drive, a Pentium 4, 3.6 ghz machine.) Oh, and it really does take up 15 Gig of hard drive space.
Combine that with the statement that Microsoft made awhile back, saying that no computer that is made today can actually 'run' the program to it's fullest graphical potential (it's just not made yet), and you realize that you'll never--ever--get the quality that is advertised on the box or on their ads.
If you go with the minimum requirements for the game, I guarantee you won't be happy. It just won't run. You will have no graphics, and it will move at about 1 frame every few seconds. As it is, I can't get more than about 12-20 frames per second, even with my upgrades.
Anyway, it should be cutting edge for a few years, until the next FS comes out...
So, buyer beware--you need a monster computer to run this thing... but if you have one, then you'll enjoy it.
edited 6/10/07: Microsoft now has a patch you can download that makes this run better, with more features able to run at the same time. The pictures are clearer, and you can amp up the graphics, too, while not losing game play ability.

Ce n'est réellement pas jeu dont on va se lasser en peu de temps... encore faut-il avoir un peu de patience...!
Je le recommanderai mais avec un peu de réserve; il faut le tempérament et la patience pour y trouver un réel plaisir.
