Lots of sample databases...and code...and tips/tricks... and a PDF version of the book with extra chapters on the accompanying CD.
The style is similar to those in John's previous books, so you'll like this one if you've read the earlier ones. Definitely worth the money...the first time you need to learn "how do I do this?", it'll pay for itself in the time it would take you to learn "by trial and error".
One star off since there's way too much Visual Basic implementation in the examples, would have preferred that they stuck to macro execution examples. Had VB been a prereq, might have eased the pain.
Bottom line, you should have this in your Access development library. When supplemented by the online Access 'help', might be the only information you need.
If you don't know already, then I'll tell you. Access 2007 is a completely different animal from 2003. Not only does it look different and act different, it has features and capabilities that 2003 never dreamed of. I'm not an Access pro, but I'm not a rank beginner either. I started with chapter one and I'm working my way through the entire book. I'm surprised at how much I've learned already. The book is particularly useful on the many occasions when I yank it off the shelf to answer one of those "How in the heck do I do [x]?" questions. Not all books can perform equally well as a comprehensive textbook and a handy reference guide. This one does.
However, the one glaring weakness of this text is the accompanying CD. Some of the sample databases on the CD trigger errors in the VBA code when I try to open them. Apparently, I don't know enough VBA to figure out what's wrong, so they're basically useless. Other sample databases can't be used at all unless you first install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express, then figure out how to configure it, and the sample databases, so that the sample databases will open. Good luck with that, I still haven't managed it. In other words, the entire CD is basically a no-go. Without the examples, it's often difficult to follow along with explanations in the text. If you don't have a copy of a database that you can experiment with, I suggest you create one as you go. Save extra copies of it just in case you accidentally kill one. With a better CD I would have rated this text 5 stars instead of 3.
One more thing. This book will teach you how to use a piece of database software. It is not intended to be a textbook on database design. If you have no familiarity with relational databases and how to properly design them, I doubt that this or any other Access book will help you very much. This is one area in which a grounding in the fundamentals is essential. It will save you a ton of frustration and dozens of hours of wasted effort. Trust me, as one who learned the hard way.

But, sadly, I get the impression that the authors may have mistaken quantity for quality. For example, despite sticking with a superficially logical structure and approach, the first actual "do something useful" portion of the book doesn't start until page 141... They spend 80 pages, no less, "Exploring the New Look of Access 2007", but in so doing kick off this detailed volume with an exploration of features that even advanced users may actually not need... Now, of course, books are random-access resources and it is possible to simply skip-ahead, but this comes across as a very clumsy way to write: what is the point of structuring a book if you just encourage people to ignore vast sections of it?
Another curious item is the font size and weight in the book. Perhaps I have been unlucky enough to get a copy where the ink transfer was a little "off", but the font size is about 18 characters to the inch, or roughly an 4-point font... That's absolutely ridiculous.
On the plus side the paperback edition does come with a full PDF copy of the entire volume, which can be size-adjusted on your monitor, and read alongside your Access program...
Plus Points:-
1. Extensive coverage - likely most things you will need are to be found in here somewhere
2. The companion CD has a PDF of the entire book, which is very handy
Minus Points:-
1. Poor sequencing of content
2. Ridiculously tiny font size
3. Poor editing - splitting embedded tables and figures from texts across page boundaries in an unhelpful way
On balance I can't recommend it...
My only criticism is, it could do with some simple easy step reminder pages to do common tasks, as it is the information is spread over whole chapters and it's difficult to cherry pick the precise bit of info on how to perfrm some tasks.
Also you may need to reinforce your bookcase it's a hefty book.
Loads of time saving solutions, tips and workarounds. A ideal reference book.
Wound be getting any more in future.
