I purchased this product and was redirected to Microsoft Office to provide my student email and verify I'm a student. I was then able to create an account on Microsoft's website and download the product directly through Microsoft. When I went to install the product after the download, I was asked to provide an activation key. They key I initially provided was the one of my software download orders page on Amazon, to which it told me the key was invalid. I became frustrated and started reading all these reviews and horror stories, so I immediately called Microsoft (I don't recommend this, as I was transferred to 3 different departments and wound up figuring out the problem on my own). YOU CANNOT USE THE PRODUCT KEY AMAZON PROVIDES. It won't work. You need to choose the second option when you're installing the product. I don't remember the exact wording, but it's along the lines of using your Microsoft account. It will ask you to enter the email address you provided to create your Microsoft account and the password. Installing the product this way worked perfectly!
Microsoft also offers their dreamspark initiative, which offers even more software, operating system(s), and so much more to students. They are one organization that gives back, regardless of the negative feedback or opinions people may have of their policies they are not a monopoly that takes and never gives back. Why is this a big deal? Because they don't have to, they do so to help others.
I bought this for my daughter's new computer. She is a college student attending school overseas. I had multiple problems trying to download it without success. I contacted the company that handles student verification multiple times. They responded each time with form emails asking me to provide the information which I did repeatedly. Finally, after sending an email threatening to contact my credit card company and let them figure it out, I received a response saying that they were not permitted to download to students attending to schools overseas.
Out of sheer desperation and with little hope for success, I contacted Microsoft directly. Much to my surprise and relief and without any issues, they agreed to do the download remotely. It took about an hour but the agent was polite, helpful and personable.
Altogether, I spent nearly ten hours attempting to download this software. It works fine now but it should not be this hard. Still. kudos to Microsoft for coming through in the end.
I would strongly recommend not buying this product on Amazon -- especially this student-validation version -- until the kinks have been worked out. There is nothing but problems with Microsoft and the purchase of their product on Amazon. Two many zigs and zags to make things work and absolutely pitiful response from Microsoft itself. Amazon (as usual) gave me excellent customer service. I am convinced that they WILL find a way to make buying this product on Amazon a worthwhile, money-saving process in the future.
Immediately after buying the product, I was given the option to download. I clicked on the link and was eventually asked to enter my .edu email in order to proceed. I did this and then clicked the verification email that I was sent. The link took me to a page, where I selected the first option to enter my student email. It verified my account, and brought up an optional step which asked me to login to my Microsoft Office account. Be aware that your office email is likely different from your student email.
Once I had completed this process, my download started. I did not have any problems with the whole process. Microsoft either fixed the issues that others have described from a few+ months ago, or users may have been entering their student email when it asked for the office email, etc. Either way, this works well, was easy to install, and I would highly recommend it to anyone needing Office on their computer.
One addtional note. For anyone confused about what Office 365 is, be aware that it is simply a 4 year pre-paid subscription to the most recent Microsoft Office. At the end of those 4 years you will need to renew your subscription if you want to continue using the product. Office 2013 was downloaded for me. I also double checked to make sure that there was no auto-renewal of my subscription, and can confirm that is the default option, so you'll have nothing to worry about.
