Back to 950 XL I have to say that I have not problems that all, the phone is quite good, it does all what is suppose to do and in a admirable way, not even the overheat some has mentioned, I am writing this review with the phone while fb, instagram and tweeter are open in background. I got mine through Amazon at tag price of 348.00 US$ and I’m using it in Venezuela with Telefonica Movistar SIM.
My only little concern is related to the news that Microsoft has close the Lumia chapter of their smartphone production. Now everybody talk about the next Surface Phone. What is the really meaning of this? There are millions of Lumina out there, are they to be abandoned? I don’t think so, we will keep receiving OS updated that will keep all Lumia working even better. Microsoft is very fragile in the smartphone market, any kind of misbehave with costumer is very high price they can’t afford to pay. Will see.
In conclusion, I seriously believe the Lumia 950 XL is an excellent phone and the last OS Windows mobile version is mature enough, very close to perfection.
The most major downfall I've experienced isn't from the phone. It's the lack of app support from from the store. At best there is basic app support: Spotify, Pandora, Facebook, Instagram are some of the apps that come to mind that are made by the their respective people though, they lack th emost recent changes that have been shipped out. If you like Pinterest, there's an app for it, however that app is designed by a third party. If you use Imgur, same story. In terms of browsers, there is no Chrome/Fire app in the store to be used. Gotta use Microsoft Edge or a third party browser i've never heard of before. Maps? Gotta use Bing Maps. They perform well enough, though still suffer from that bing wonkiness. In terms of games, good luck, there's a deafening silence to the call for mainstream games to come to Microsoft store. We got Candy crush...and off the top of my head that's it for mainstream. No Pokemon go (but you can tether so....do that with a second phone if possible). A lot of the perceived problems with the 950XL (and windows phones in general) could be solved if Microsoft either made it easier for apps to migrate from android/iPhone OR simply pushed for more support. a good nudge here or there would aid greatly.
Ultimately i really like the phone, enough that i make do with what it does have. I bought phone strictly for the Camera and it lived to my expectation on the apps front. However surpassed expectations everywhere else. If you're looking for a workhorse phone, and don't need all the extra app pazzaz that Androids and iPhones possess, i think the 950xl is a great candidate for your viewing pleasure. I give it 4 stars not because of the lack of app support (that i could care little about. the basics are all that i require, and it has them.), but because i ordered the WHITE 950XL and instead got a BLACK one instead. I like the phone too much to wait for another.
The only thing which may require some guidelines, is removal of phone's cover. The procedure is really cumbersome and requires that you have uncut fingernails. Well, if need be, solution can be found in official Microsoft video for removing 950 XL cover.
The package includes:
• Wired USB-C (USB Type C) charger (AC-100E)
• USB-A-to-USB-C cable
• In-ear headphone buds
• Quick start guide
• Large high contrast organic 5.7 inch LED screen.
If you've used to have a phone with a screen under 5" and a standard HD-ready 720x1280 resolution, you'd notice a big difference by getting a Lumia 950 XL. A wide 5.7" screen boasting 1440x2560 resolution makes a really big difference. You'll figure out why Microsoft Windows 10 has some UI controls that looked clumsy: they were made with a large screen in mind.
• High-speed 4G LTE
This specific RM-1085 model works in multiple countries. As this is an Italian version, supported bands are:
LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 20(800), 28(700), 38(2600), 40(2300)
If you're wondering if LTE gives any difference with 3G/HSPA+, mind you, the difference is huge; my old Samsung ATIV S is like a 14,400 kbps USR modem compared to Lumia 950 XL. Even if the signal is low, download speeds are amazing, watching streaming videos using cell it's no longer a problem.
• Retina scanner
This is not your grandma's fingerprint scanner. With Windows Hello you can unlock the phone even if you wear gloves. False negatives can be tolerated, the positive rate is almost 8 in 10 checks. (Life hack: lock the phone and unlock it again if the the phone failed to recognize you in the first attempt.)
• Nice 20 M pixel camera
Week, that's not the quality you can get with a 41 M pixel camera of Lumia 1020, yet the resulting image is crisp and high contrast, focus works pretty well good. That said, camera in Lumia 950 XL is not even close to the lenses in Lumia 1020…
• Long lasting battery
A 3300 mA•h battery is pretty capable for this phone. It will surely give you some 10 hrs of active usage (active browsing with edge and videos) and secure 24 hrs of standby / slight usage (a few WhatsApp talks, mail "as arrives"). At the moment I have a prognosis of remaining 51% and 11 hrs 12 minutes of usage provided that the last time the phone was charging was 9 hrs ago.
Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 with 3 GB RAM and Adreno 430 graphics processor allow to flawlessly watch Full HD YouTube and other streaming videos on TV by using Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter v2. Compare this with hardware of Lumia 650. You can modify Lumia 650 to work with Continuum, but that will be a nightmare: Hardware of Lumia 650 is not capable to handle videos on TV. Even a 140p video is lagging. With Lumia 950 XL you can watch videos online while casting it to a TV and there won't be a single lag.
• USB-C reversible connector and fast charging
This is a godsend compared to microUSB you find on Lumia 650. Finally, this is a connector that Microsoft should've included with all their phones… but haven't done so. You don't have to boggle your mind trying to insert the plug in the USB port, a huge relief.
Charging is how that fast so I can be sure the phone will be charged to 100% almost every time I charge it.
• Clear and loud speaker
You'll never miss the call, ringer is always loud and clear; not your regular phone. You'll love how Lumia 950 XL rings.
The housing is poorly engineered. Compare it to the housing of Microsoft Lumia 650, which is beautiful. With Lumia 950 XL there are plentiful of things to hate starting from thick bezel to poorly placed buttons. You won't expect a phone in 2017 to have a finger-thick top and bottom bezel. Volume control buttons are so inaccurate and poorly placed that you would push them in 100% of cases where you wanted to push power button. Not to mention how hard is to fix the phone in a car holder without brushing against the buttons. Seriously, buttons could've been spaced smarter.
• On-screen buttons
This is hilariously stupid: you have a thick bezel at the bottom of the screen, yet Microsoft decided to remove hardware touch buttons and make software buttons that hover the screen and consume a noticeable part of the screen that could've been used smarter. The buttons are almost always there interfering with browsing and eating up screen space.
If support is what you're looking for, Lumia isn't your phone. The phone failed to restore from a backup multiple times and there are multiple cases when it did so for others, yet Microsoft ignores the issue insisting that the problem is on consumer's side. I've lost my favorites, my settings from the old phone only because the phone failed to restore from the cloud.
