My first sample would not hold a charge at all. I returned it to Amazon and got a replacement unit. Thanks to Prime for the free return shipping.
The second unit charged and worked great. However, the battery only lasts a week. By the time I figured it out, I ran out of time to return to Amazon, so I had to contact Microsoft Support. They told me the unit was on backorder and that I should be patient, but they know of the issues with the keyboard and therefore I did not have to return this one.
Two weeks go by and I decide to check in as there is no update in status. The tech was very helpful, and told me that unfortunately, there are so many keyboards with issues that they cannot offer me a replacement for this exact keyboard and instead will ship me any other keyboard within the price of this one. They have since stopped production or the universal mobile keyboard, or will soon. Since I want to use this with my iPad, I asked about the Microsoft Folding Bluetooth keyboard. Sadly, the tech said, that one also has battery problems. So off to the third and only other Bluetooth keyboard that they offer. The Microsoft Designer Bluetooth Desktop. The good news is that it does not have any known battery issues. It's impossible, because it does not come with a rechargeable battery. I need to provide my own. I'm going from a nice, compact keyboard to a desktop set that includes a number pad. That minimizes the portability factor by a lot...
So in short - stay away from this keyboard. You've been warned.
I contacted Microsoft directly and they offered to compensate me for the keyboard (including shipping). It is a fair offer, but I had wanted this keyboard for too long to simply send it back. I had no idea what was wrong with it until I read the Amazon reviews. On a positive note it does pair easily to my Samsung Tab and is not too small to type without slowing down the pace. Furthermore, the tablet sits nicely in the keyboard.
I have decided to keep it. The reason for not returning it is due to the following: 1. My time is valuable to me; 2. The keyboard works great with a continue plugged in charge; 3. I normally have a charger on hand that is small enough that is does not get in my way of typing; 4. It has a cover and is light weight; 5. It has a device switch that ensures visibility to the device being used (vs. press button that may change when inadvertently pressed while carrying a bag).
It is a great keyboard and I am shocked that Microsoft would pass off such a significant design flaw. I am glad that I got it through a warehouse deal or I would have been far more irritated with the performance of it.
