Recently I purchased Windows to install 64bit version and run on a newly purchased Apple Macbook Pro 15" Laptop 2.3 Gigahertz I7 and 4 gig DDR3 Memory via Bootcamp on OS 10.6.8. It installed fine and use Boot Camp Windows Drivers. Running Windows runs nicely on Macbook Pro. I wanted to Dual Boot both Windows 7 and OS 10.6.8 for the purpose of being able to run both and still use some windows software that I have not purchased Mac versions yet or not available on Mac.

I mostly use it for Adobe CS4 software since I don't have the Mac version yet and also learn about Windows 7 to train other people to use it or Troubleshoot problems they may have. I did encounter installing some of the Adobe CS4 programs from the DVD's.

My over all impression of Windows 7 is very good, but find things in different places or renamed differently then in Windows XP of which I am used to since 2002. The user interface has a more glass look to the windows that pop up due to the Aero interface. Start button is in the same location as before, along with Taskbar.

New review, after months of use: it is the best version of Windows ever, and I would say is just as good, or better than, Mac OS X. When I first installed it, it did something to the driver of my Gateway laptop's trackpad. I had to install a patch (after hunting everywhere for it, which took several days) and now it works close to perfectly. This is the Windows version Vista was supposed to be. Now Mac fans (of which I am one) can no longer smugly say "It will be just as buggy as the previous Windows", as one of the silly Apple ads said. I am tempted to give it 5 stars, but that would imply perfection, and no OS will ever be that.

PREVIOUS REVIEW:

I really looked forward to Win 7 after all the positive reviews. Here is my experience so far. The startup and overall performance of my computer, with 4Gb of RAM, a 1.83 GHz Intel core duo CPU and a 64-bit version of Win 7. While working on a Word and Excel doc, the computer spontaneously rebooted after installing new updates (without warning me it was about to reboot, or informing me it was installing updates, it just did it in the background so I had no idea it was doing so). After rebooting and restoring the Word and Excel session I was working on, I discovered, to my horror and frustration, the hyperlinks I had on my Excel doc, links to files on my external hard drive, had been edited to link to non-existing locations on my C: drive. How did this happen?? I spent hours having to re-edit the links on those cells to point to a folder on my external HD.

Unbelievable!

Also, my Gateway laptop trackpad seems incompatible with Win 7. When I move my finger across the trackpad the scrollbar scrolls down spontaneously, uncontrollably. I had to buy an external wireless mouse to deal with this, although honestly this may be a Gateway issue that they need to address. I've tried updating the trackpad/mouse driver from Device Manager, but I get a message saying I have the latest driver installed. Hopefully Gateway issues a fix, this is a VERY ANNOYING BUG!

I only switch to Win 7 because I just built a very fast PC about a month ago, So this XP vs Win 7 is a little unfair. After my initial install (Win 7 Pro) I was wondering why I even bothered. But, I figured might as well go on with it.
I have been using Win 7 pro for about a month now, I have installed and reinstalled it 4x just to see if there is any problem, so far it is stable and fast, I also tweaked the registry, and there are a few things that I miss with XP, full control of icons, and thumbnails features on folders.. I like the flip3d on 7, I think to really appreciate it a little more than the Xp is to use the Virtual XP, only then you can compare the esthetic between the 2 OS,I do understand it is not a direct comparison, simply because Virtual XP is not a full Operating system running by itself but it is fast switch between two stages. I do not have problems with the apps that I run on XP, haven't encountered any compatibilty issues, of course I had to download 64 bits patches which is expected. I cannot find any negative issues just yet. Also on my final install, I have eliminated the Virtual XP mode since I really do not need it now... If you are skeptical about moving from XP to Win 7 because of older hardware, then stick with XP, because it has proven itself reliable.I could add more about new features, but I think that is well covered up by others already...

I was running Microsoft Windows XP Professional on my Dell Lattitude E6400 laptop with few issues, thus never felt a need to upgrade. Recently I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 for doing photographic post production work and found that, though I could load it with the XP Professional O.S., I could not start it. It gave me an error saying "The ICC profile cannot be used because the ICC profile description is invalid". When I researched the error on line I found several forum threads talking about this error with Adobe Photoshop Elements running on Windows Vista. They mostly explained ICC as the "International Color Consortium" and advised using several diagnostic tools to run, or to adjust your monitor/printer color. After running some of these diagnostics, and discovering all the profiles needed are present in the proper places, and their descriptions are proper, I did some further research. I found an obscure reference to Windows XP being inadequate as an operating system to handle ICC profiles. I, then loaded it on a drive which came with the laptop, and had a non genuine Windows 7 Home Edition Operating System on it. Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 worked properly. I purchased Microsoft Windows 7 Professional and loaded it on a higher capacity drive which was blank. After doing all the configuration required, I loaded Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 on it and it works well. I also discovered that Windows 7 Professional boots up faster on the laptop which, to me, is a big plus.

I'm ok with what I got even if it was misrepresented! I was lead to believe it was a full version which means in the future I can load it on a new computer. What I got is a licence for a refurbished PC so not quite the value I was looking for as I will not be able to load this on a PC I may buy in the future. It loaded and is working fine on this PC so not entirely upset with the purchase.
