This vendor saved me a lot of grief when upgrading to a new computer because this software was still available.

I had been using MS Works spreadsheets for almost 20 years and a lot of my personal life depended upon them. So I bought a refurbished desktop PC just to get Windows 7 Professional 64-bit instead of the awful Windows 10 and Windows 8. To my horror, the new PC came with no software. I did some research and was appalled that I am now expected to pay about $80 per year to Microsoft just to have MS Office 2016 with Cloud that I never needed. I am sorry, but anyone can back up their important files to flash drives and external hard drives for free. I have used MS Office at work and it is nicer, but for my own personal needs, the basic MS Works meets my needs.

At first, I was informed of freeware called Open Office that competes with MS Office. I downloaded version 4.1.3 for free with no viruses or malware found. It worked, but did a few things differently that I did not like. Then upon further research, I found that many users complained of it quit working altogether after 6 months. This would be my ultimate nightmare since all of my spreadsheets that would be modified with Open Office could no longer be opened with MS Office and the yearly hostage fee.

Since one gets what they pay for, I started reading reviews on MS Works 8 and MS Works 9, both sold by this same vendor. I decided that MS Works 8 would fit my needs, but had doubts that it would work on my new 64-bit OS. The vendor responded to all of my e-mails to reassure me that it would. It arrived very quickly as MS Works 8.5 on CD and I installed it with no problem. It still feels the same as what I have been using for 20 years which is quite alright with me. Considering how cheap this was, I don't even know why I wasted my time with Open Office. This is also LOTS cheaper than paying the yearly fee to Microsoft.

To replace what MS did not put in Windows 7

I actually prefer the older versions of MS Works - I like this one because of the built-in calendar. Although I'm not a big calendar user anymore - being retired has it's advantages - I still use a daily calendar to help my memory and this one works perfectly for me - always did. Then when I recently upgraded to Win7Pro, there was no calendar to be found. I searched the web and didn't find a thing that worked like I wanted it to work. Google's is way too clunky to use and doesn't print in a compact fashion like this one does. The only thing I basically use is that - the calendar. I prefer my even-older version of MS Works, v4.5 that dates from the Windows 95 era when I need to compose something or run a spreadsheet. Call me a stodgy old man if you will, it works much more efficiently that the later versions do.
Oh - how did the seller do? Got the CD to me several day prior to the promised date - not a bit of problem loading it. Those of us who prefer some of the older software are thankful that sellers like this still keep the discs available. And a great price too. All of this is why I rate them FIVE STARS.

My Granny is quite the senior-compu-citizen, turns out! She decided (@ 87 yrs. of age) that she needed to UPGRADE from her prehistoric machine to the new & improved Windows 7 op system on a sleek & slim HP model! I supported her transition, being the nerd that I am and went about transferring her familiar items to her awesome upgrade. Of course, the HP had all the bells & whistles, but when we tried to open some of her documents she'd created on her old computer (in Microsoft WORKS) we encountered error messages detailing corrupted files and such! It seemed entirely too tedious to have to go in and save all those documents in the WORD file type (my Granny has a lot of documents), so I fiured just installing WORKS on the upgrade would be quicker. Frustrated that the all-powerful WORD 2010 couldn't speak it's predecessor's dated language...I didn't waste time crying over spilled milk, but instead hit the virtual street on a mission to find the ancient software my Granny so dearly loved. I searched high and low, but was discouraged @ the pricing...why so high for this relic? Finally, but not surprisingly (as I should have just come here first & saved time) - I came to Amazon and found exactly what she needed and @ a fabulously fair price! It shipped quickly and solved our pickle perfectly! Now, granny is fresh and familiar @ the same time - blending the old with the new...taking care of business. Good Stuff!

Illegal software is what I received.....

FYI: Item was a CD that came with a previously owned PC, labeled NOT FOR RESALE. This was NOT software that the seller purchased himself but a CD that came free as part of a PC purchase. This was sold illegally. I'm just glad that my new laptop and Microsoft doesn't know this. While I am happy to have MS Works on my new laptop, I think it's wrong to sell something like this (although I won't have a problem since I have the proper key). (I had this happen before with an OS disc (Windows XP) I ordered (not knowing it was a mass production disc for a college) which ended up being useless on my work PC when MS Windows upgraded and discovered it. It put a big red flag on my PC which could not be removed until I had to re-buy the program with a proper key.) Buyers need to beware of sellers such as the one I bought from. I love it so much that when I lost my old CD, due to scratches, I HAD to buy it again.

MS Works8 is a nice package of office programs. It has everything you would need without all the glitz. There's only two things to be aware of when it comes to this versus MSOffice, or MSWorks 8.5 and higher.
1) The Word Processor will only let you do multi-columns for the ENTIRE document, as opposed to MSO allowing the paragraphs to be multi-columned while the rest is single.
2) MSW 8 (not 8.5 or 9) is the LAST MSW to have "WordArt". This nifty feature lets you design text into a frame with lots of fancy effects. To do this with 8.5+, you 'need to use one of our publishing packages'
