This came out as an accessory for the Xbox back in '01. Came with a dongle that took up a controller port, and this remote. You NEEDED this in order to play DVD's The Xbox wouldn't do so out of the box. That was a way for Microsoft to cut costs when manufacturing the Xbox.

I dismissed this accessory years ago when the Xbox was fresh on the scene. But then we found out how robust the Xbox is when modded. The Xbox has left the market ever since, but yet it still lives. Years later, I finally saw the light.

Perfect if you want to get a media center experience with your Xbox (via XBMC) I gotta say, it's pretty cool to navigate through the UI on my dashboard with the remote, rather than using the gamepad. Batteries last long, and it's ergonomic enough.

If you're searching for this nowadays, there's a very specific reason why that's the case. A worthy addition to any collection.

I purchased this because my family's DVD player broke, meaning we couldn't enjoy movie night like we used to. So when one of our favorite movies was coming out that we wanted to rent, I purchased this to use with my Xbox in the hope that we could connect the Xbox to our TV. I bought this remote playback kit here on amazon for $6 plus shipping, and used it for about a week when I figured out that I didn't even need it. I had just got done with a softmod with the UnleashedX dashboard and went to watch a DVD, but the remote wouldn't work, so I just used the controller and later on noticed that the IR sensor wasn't even plugged in(Took it out for the softmod), so instead of buying this, put the money towards a good softmod.

This didn't feel a genuine product to me. While the device does work it often needs several presses of the buttons and has to be pointed with precision accuracy at the receiver.

I openend it up and bent out the bulb connectors so it was more prominent from the body which helped - meaning you dont need to aim it so carefully.

My fault for not researching the alternatves properly, and expecting better quality from this reseller. Not cheap either.
