The one of the left is my adapter that I bought from the store. Even has the official Microsoft logo.
Additionally, it has scratch marks on it and definitely used. It does, by some miracle, work however.
I'm keeping it because I need a wireless adapter and it does the job. But very misleading to show one thing and ship another.
How wrong I was.
I opened the Amazon package, and the bulk package for the adapter popped out, which, I expect since this did say it was in bulk packaging (some people were upset, but it clearly says that). I opened it, and the adapter and cord, wrapped in their foam bag, fell in my lap, and I knew from the size of it that it was immediately the old version (I had one previously)
Needless to say, not too happy. The adapter works for what I need it to, but it's not the point. It's not the one I paid for. I would have gone to eBay and paid half the price for this one sealed in retail packaging.
I'll be contacting Amazon to see what we can do about this, but be forewarned, you MIGHT still get an old model, even on when I order on 10/10/18
ALSO YOU MAY OR MAY NOT GET A USB DONGLE EXTENSION CABLE, VARIES BY SELLER - THIS IS IMPORTANT, SEE BELOW
FURTHER EDIT AND UPDATE - STRONGLY RECOMMEND ORDERING FROM DEALZONE DISTRIBUTORS IF THEY ARE STILL SELLING THIS AND STILL OFFERING "FULFILLED BY AMAZON" OPTION SEE BELOW
Sorry for screaming that part in all capital letters :) ... but Microsoft has caused so much heartache to it's customers with the so called "new and improved" edition of this wireless adapter ( amazon ASIN number B00ZB7W4QU - copy and paste that number into the search box up there on the top of the amazon website and the guilty newer version adapter will pop right up)... and to be honest I'm terrified of this review being lumped in with the newer adapter by the amazon bots (but 5 stars as usual for amazon's amazing customer service, see below) .. which is what appears to have happened with the newer adapter...true the newer adapter is smaller and sleeker looking, as the product description says 66 percent smaller.. but the problem is there are SO many reviews under that newer adapter which are clearly intended to be for the older version of the adapter (the bigger one with the circle-shaped button on it's side).... so people (like myself) read those reviews and think to ourselves " Oh big deal, the product description says Win 10 only but there's all these reviews saying it works with Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 so I'll order it anyways".. and then surprise, it doesn't work unless you're running Windows 10 (the newer adapter anyways)...Check the product description, if it says "66 percent smaller" and you're not running Win 10, avoid it like the plague.
Clearly this is an opportunistic money-making grab by Microsoft to force people to upgrade to Windows 10.. I'm perfectly happy with my Win 8.1 computer thanks very much and these rumors I've heard about DRM management in Win 10 do not make me happy.. to be clear I'm not a pirate I like to pay for my music, movies et cetera :) ... but far as I'm concerned I could purchase say a music file, Win 10 gets confused and insists I didn't buy the music file even though I did and suddenly I can't play my music file.. that and I've heard so many complaints about Win 10 in general that I refuse to upgrade until years from now when they get all the bugs worked out.. put it this way, my brother in law has worked in the computer field as a network administrator and computer repair guy for over a decade now, he is normally an early adopter for new Microsoft stuff, installed Win 10... and disliked it so much he went right back to Win 8.1 after a while.
Okay I'm sorry, rant over :) (though hopefully the rant contained some useful info ) .. as I found out the hard way, the newer slimmer adapter - check the product description, it will be described as 66 percent smaller - will NOT work with anything other than Windows 10 ... hour upon hour of research and driver searching was fruitless for the newer adapter to make it work on my Win 8.1 PC ... finally stumbled across a web page... google " microsoft wireless adapter windows xbox one controller windows compatibility" (no quotes, copy and paste that without the quotes into the google search box) and it should turn up the same web page for you called " Compatibility for the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows" where Microsoft flat out states the newer adapter will not work with Win 10 ... which creates SO much heartache and grief and confusion for customers in general it's not even funny, but anyways...
Now that I have the correct one for my Win 8.1 computer... which would be the bigger one with the circular button on it's side (newer version does not have a circle button on the side I believe it has a big rectangle/square push button on the front..never made it far enough with the new one to even press the darn button but if memory serves me correctly...) ... it works great, just plugged it in and Windows instantly downloaded the drivers and it started working. I have read in reviews for ... heck who knows at this point what the review is for, could be for the older adapter, could be for the newer adapter as my rant above mentioned... but in reviews lumped under the newer adapter, some users mention that they had to try a few tricks.. for example running Windows Update to force the PC to search for and find the adapters .... so sounds like it's hit or miss, depends on if your PC feels like cooperating or not :) ( some google research should turn up an answer for you but I can see how this would be frustrating for someone who's expecting it to be simply plug and play..).
Anyways, we tested the adapter with two xbox one controllers (as in controllers that were originally intended for use with the xbox one video game console) on "cuphead" in Steam and no problems, both controllers worked flawlessly.... We've had the adapter for all of one day :P , but I'm pretty good about updating my reviews so even if you see this years after I wrote it assume the adapter is still working fine for us :)
As others have pointed out this adapter is HUGE, enough so to the point where it will easily take up the room of two USB slots (so shame on Microsoft for improving it to a smaller size - and then forcing people to have Win 10 in order to take advantage of that improvement) ... which is where the usb dongle (basically a usb extension cable that takes up far less room solving the problem - plug dongle into PC then adapter into dongle) comes in handy - provided you're lucky enough to get one to begin with ! :P I don't think I'm allowed to mention the seller by name on reviews here .... plus it was an order fulfilled by amazon anyways so no idea if the seller forgot to include it when submitting the product for sale to amazon or if amazon forgot to send it ... but unfortunately in my case no usb dongle came with it... happened to have a usb extension cable at home but the wireless controller refused to cooperate with it.
This is where amazon's amazing customer service comes in :) .. contacted amazon, they promptly refunded the cost of the wireless adapter without asking me to ship it back to them (it'll take the usual 3 to 5 business days for it to show up on my credit card but not worried, amazon has always come true for me on the rare occasion I've needed a refund) and advised me to place a new order but paid for the fastest shipping method offered - two day shipping which is fine I can wait - so basically I now have two wireless adapters.. felt rather guilty about that and asked the amazon rep if there was any way they could just send me the usb dongle but they said no, they have to mail the entire product... I always recommend amazon as a seller to anyone looking to buy basically anything and frequently give amazon gift certificates as birthday and xmas presents so hopefully I can make it up to amazon that way ( I buy a ton of stuff off amazon too ... just trying to justify my guilt to myself out loud here, never mind me :P ) ... Given this is the older version of the adapter it's a safe bet amazon no longer sells it directly and you have to go with a 3rd party seller (make sure it's a "fulfilled by amazon" seller for minimum hassle if there's a problem) , sent a message to the 3rd party seller asking if it ships with the usb dongle, fingers crossed. On the questions and answers part of the product description when someone asked if it comes with the usb adapter, one person said no, one said yes so that's where I get the "results vary depending on your seller" part...
So there you have it.. please feel free to leave comments if you have any questions and I'll do my best to help you out.. hopefully I can help you avoid the hours of heartache and grief I spent on the newer version of the adapter only to find it would never work for my PC (thanks Microsoft - that's sarcastic of course.. but a genuine thank you to amazon, awesome as always :) ) ...
As a further edit and update... I was particularly delighted with Dealzone Distributors in that they not only responded promptly to my request (like within the hour) asking if the adapter came with a usb cable/dongle, they confirmed that it did - and when I got the adapter in the mail, sure enough, came not only with the usb dongle/cable but also with the instructions in what looks to be the official Xbox One envelope-wrap-type thing ... compare to the other seller (whom I will not name here only because I think it goes against amazon's policy if you say something bad about a seller on amazon on a product review - besides amazon took care of this problem with the seller anyways see above , go amazon :) ) who got back to me but flat out stated they don't sell their adapters with a usb cable... this underscores the importance of contacting the seller first to see if they sell their adapter with a usb cable.
It was easy to install on my Windows 10 machine, and did not require any driver downloads. Unfortunately that is where the positive experience ended for me. The wireless device went out about 10-15 minutes of use, and is rather hot to the touch when I attempted to unplug it to use a different USB port. Here are the things I tried to remedy this issue:
- Used different USB ports with the same results. My gaming rig has 6 ports and my USB hub on the gaming monitor had 2. It had the same problem on all 8 ports.
- Removed the item from computer and deleted all drivers to reinstall. It worked for about 15-20 minutes this time, but the same thing happened. Once again, I noticed that it was quite hot when I removed it from any of the USB port.
Anyhow, I ended up returning it and purchased another one through the official MS site. Hopefully I will not have any problems with that too.
