Needed a hammer

Ok. Where to begin? . . . Well it arrived a day later then was promised. Which wasn’t a problem but just made me a bit sad as I was excited to get this. When it arrived, I heard the delivery driver drag and drop, literally, it off at my door. To be fair, it was kinda heavy though. I wouldn’t be surprised if he dreaded my stop. After I brought it into my home and looked at the box, it had looked like a tiny fur baby had already had its way with it and chewed up a decent hole in it. This box had seen some things on it’s journey. Lol. Opening it up? Everything was nicely packaged. Nothing was wiggling anymore then it should. As I’m assembling, the instructions are easy to read and know what parts are what, but as I was installing the first back wall, I needed to hammer one of the pegs. I hammered quite a few of them. They were bent too far and preventing the walls from sliding down into place. And one of the flat head screws was missing. Luckily I happened to have one around and it worked better then the one it came with. Other then those few things, it’s quite sturdy, looks great, and quite roomy! Now to go get my little pocket puppies!

Critter Nation & Ferret Nation -- The Best Animal Habitats You Will Ever Own

I have owned a Ferret Nation for years (over 10), in fact I owned two at one point. Given how well those cages held up (the second was given to a friend, and is still in like-new condition), I was ecstatic when I found the Critter Nation at a local PetsMart, and proceeded to do more research about it online.

The Ferret Nation and Critter Nation are essentially the same, except that the bars on the Critter Nation run horizontal and are not spaced as far apart as the Ferret Nation. The Critter Nation bars are even suitable for sugar gliders (they are only about the size of a chipmunk). In fact, I'm thinking about buying a second Critter Nation to upgrade my sugar gliders' housing, as the first one is in use by my more numerous pet rats currently.

At this point, the Critter Nation is comfortably housing 8 pet rats, and is split into separate units by locking the ladder in an "up" position (standard function for the cage). My 5 wonderful boys live on the lower level, and my 3 beautiful girls live on the upper level. I'm looking at buying the scatter guard accessory trays, but for now I'm just using the normal trays that come with the cage. While it's inconvenient to sweep up their bedding so often, it's still worth it to provide them with the extra space, and I have options to consider to help prevent this issue in the future.

Pros:

* The Critter Nation is SOLID. Rats are very intelligent and I always have to consider if they can escape a cage by operating whatever locking mechanism it has -- that's not a concern at all with the doors on the Critter Nation, yet they are still easy for me to open despite having tendonitis in my dominate hand. My Ferret Nation is now 10+ years old and does not have any rust on it, the door locks still work perfectly, and the cage is like new. I expect my Critter Nation will hold up just as well over time.

* LOTS of room. The cage is huge and leaves plenty of room to accessorize -- the underside of the shelves even have bars on them, despite the shelves being solid, so you can hang light-weight items like hammocks or small bird toys on the underside of the shelves to entertain your pet!

* The shelves have solid plastic covers. The solid shelves eliminate the potential for foot injury as there's really no way for your rat (or other pet) to get its feet caught in the shelf.

* They make washable covers for the wire ramps -- I don't like wire ramps, floors or shelves due to the potential for foot-injury with rats, but there is an option to buy ramp covers as accessories, which makes them solid and can prevent injury in the long run. I was even lucky even to receive ramp covers with my order from WayFair through Amazon, free of charge. The best part is that I can toss them in the washer and dryer, so I'm not scrubbing them by hand.

* You can add-on to this cage. I bought the single unit and the add-on unit at the same time, so my cage only needs one stand. I've separated it into two cages by using the feature that allows you to lock the ramp between units in an up position against the underside of the top unit, this closes the hole and prevents pets from going up or down into the other unit. What I realized when I added my second unit onto the original is that it had the potential for even more units if I so desired. I think this is a great feature, though I'm sure I would need a step-stool to clean the third unit as it would be quite a bit taller than me at that point.

* The stand has wheels. This is great when you need to relocate the cage on the same floor of a home, or if you just need to move it a bit for cleaning. The wheels have locking features for safety as well.

Cons:

* The doors are really big, it's sort of a pro and con all at the same time. It's easier to clean, but the size of the doors are the only thing that makes me think twice about putting Sugar Gliders in this cage -- if you have a pet that's sneaky and prone to attempt escape, and there's more than one animal in the unit, the chances of them being able to get past you are increased due to how large the doors are.

* The cage is kind of expensive. This is only a con at the start, and you have the option to buy it one unit at a time. I have not found a comparable cage for a better price, however.

* The cage is very heavy, but I only really noticed this when I had to move the boxes it arrived in before assembly. I had to slide them around on my floor because I could not lift them by myself. This is something to consider when you order it if you have to go up or down a lot of stairs -- you may be moving it a few pieces at a time before assembly. I have only moved my Ferret Nation once while it was fully assembled, and over all, it's not nearly as bad as moving large appliances.

Ultimately, for housing rats and similar pets, I think this habitat is excellent. I'd love to give my gliders the space of the Critter Nation, but I'm reluctant at this point only because of the size of the doors, the quickness of a sugar glider, and the gliders' ability to climb and fly short distances. My rats will more than get my money's worth out of this cage and I believe that for them, it was an excellent investment. The Ferret Nation is also wonderful for Ferrets and Chinchillas as I have previously housed both of those kinds of animals in my old Ferret Nation unit -- you can even buy an external ramp for it to allow your ferret or chinchilla to free-range at their leisure.

I would highly recommend these cages to anyone looking to give their pets a lot of space, particularly if you know you will continue to have those kinds of animals in your life, as this cage will generally long out-last the life span of the animals it can comfortably house. The fact that I have other cages with wire walls that are less than 5 years old but experiencing rust issues speaks volumes, as my 10+ year old Ferret Nation doesn't have a single speck of rust on it, and buying two smaller cages (Super Pets or All Living Things, for example) will cost nearly as much as a Ferret or Critter Nation... but it won't hold up as well over time, and it won't offer your pet as much space. The Critter Nation and Ferret Nation are definitely worth-while investments.

As the title states, this cage was a bit of a nightmare to assemble. After lots of trial and error, we ended up just snapping a piece off of the cage so it’d all fit together- looks a little wonky, though. On the bright side, this is the best cage i’ve ever used! The wide doors make it so easy to clean compared to other “small animal” cages. I’ve had the single critter nation for two+ years but acquired a few new rats and decided to upgrade them, and i’m so happy i did! If you’re unsure about the price tag, I promise you, it is worth it!

It’s sturdy but a tad bothersome to put it together yourself.
It’s expensive, the no name similar & cheaper brands are just as good, BUT, I wanted the smaller bar spacing so paid a premium.
The screws that hold the hooks securing the top part of the cage are u-s-e-l-e-s-s. They don’t tighten and just keep spinning so I had to locate a few that were slightly larger so they did up tight.
As I was making the cage I noticed my hands were getting dirty - I highly recommend you give the whole thing a good wipe down before putting your critters in it. It’s a metallic smelling grime that’s there, probably from manufacturing.
Overall I’m happy. My new rats are happy. We’re all happy lol

Brilliant large cage. Quite easy to assemble. Doors look like they don't line up, but they do. We left the middle section in and plenty of ropes and hammocks for our girls to get up and down. We have a 14" Tic-Tac wheel at the bottom and fits onto the side great. Love that you can completely remove the doors for cleaning out. Had some perspex made for around the bottom try to stop substrate falling out. Top tray we use mats which we change regularly. Only downside is the trays aren't deep enough. Would be great if CN made them a few inches deep. Don't use the ladders but they come with covers. Overall, we think it's the best cage for our rattie babies.

This arrived on a pallet which was not taken away so that was a bit of a pain to get rid of. It took 2 of us 3 hours to put it together. One of the corners was slightly misaligned so needed some hammering into place.
The finished product is huge and absolutely beautiful and well worth the money. I bought it for a hamster and although she still does try to chew her way out, I think she is much happier than in her previous cage (the 'extra large' from pets at home which is just too small for an animal to spend their entire life in). She patrols and explores the cage and no longer spends 6 hours maniacally running on her flying saucer wheel. This cage is well worth the effort and expense.

When my rat got injured by his brothers he hat to have surgery and was told to put him in his own cage by the vet. I felt to bad for him coz his 2 brothers had a double cage similar to this one and borrowed my sister rat cage which is fine but to me it was going from a mansion to a bed set. So I invested in this one as just wanted a very large single cage that I could add on to if I wanted to at later date. This cage toke me 20mins to assemble by my self was very easy to do so that was a bonus and once built it is exactly the cage size I wanted. In my experience of 25 years of keeping pets rats this single level cage is ideal for 2 rats any more then 2 it be best to get a double cage so they can have lots of room to play.

This cage is fantastic for our chinchillas. It is very expensive due to being an import from the US, but it's well worth it to ensure your animals are safe and happy.

Overall it is sturdy and strong, and comes with the platforms and ramps which you can choose to use or not (we chose not so the chins can jump around). The doors make up the entire front sides, and being able to open them fully is a great advantage when cleaning, and allows you to interact with your pets without them having to come out of their home which is good if they are a bit nervous.

This would also be a great cages for rats, degus and ferrets.
