I didn't read the book, so I don't know how close the movie is to it. I can say the whole family enjoyed this movie--ages 10, 16, 17, 45s. A few of us had some teary moments as well. It may remind you of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, but definitely has its own feel. Of course the Principal and "Bear" were easy to hate and the main characters easy to love. Good rental for us.

I actually Really enjoyed this movie. I went in having no opinion on it and Loved it over all. I appreciated that for the most part it avoided Crude humor kids movies have. Im no fan of crude humor I find it obnoxious and though this had some it remained sublimely away from that. It felt like a mature kids movie in that regards and I appreciated it

Funny movie that the whole family can enjoy. My 5 year old loved it and was cracking up the entire time!

My son and I loved the movie. But at the end it was rather sad than funny. Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie for kids but a tear jerker at the same time. My son and I were in tears at the end of the movie. I guess it's bc I was expecting the wimpy kid like light hearted comedy. It's much more deeper than that. Still worth it.

I read the book and loved the movie! The only thing was that I thought the movie was even sadder than the book. Anyway, it was still good, and I definitely recommend it, especially if you read the book

Based on the best selling novel by the same name, it was widely believed that this would be the next Diary of a Wimpy Kid, sadly it was not. Griffin Gluck was fantastic is his first starring role, but the rest of the cast really didn't have much chemistry, and overall the film just wasn't all that funny. Rafe Katchadorian (Gluck) is a troubled kid, who is sent to his third and final Middle School in the district. It's very strict and if he doesn't follow the rules, he could be headed to military school. Once he gets there, Rafe learns that his principle (Andrew Daly) is beyond strict and decides to get back at him by anonymous breaking not one, but all his rules, causing a school wide rebellion. The story seemed like a good one, but the truth is the pranks weren't all that extreme or funny. The kids in the theater laughed more at the preview before the film than they did at the pranks in the movie. There were also times in the film where you expected the typical crude middle school humor, and while the writers set it up, they never delivered the punch line. That's not the only issue with this film, the kids had some chemistry, but the family didn't. Lauren Graham was terrible, as her character was completely different than that of her kids. She had no connection to them or any idea what was going on with them. But for as bad as she was, it was nothing compared to how awful Rob Riggle was. I have never been a fan of his, but he was beyond annoying in this film, his personality is just so obnoxious and over the top, that the last place he belongs is in a family film. Finally, the whole animation angle brings the movie to a dead stop.Read more ›

Tried to get through this but fell asleep about 20 minutes. This is a sub-par attempt at copying an already established winner in this category (Diary of a Wimpy Kid series). Really cool animation/artwork though. Only reason this gets 2 stars.

Cute movie but a little sad, and its full of left wing nuttiness.
