C/Rtg: PG-13 The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies (2014)Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) finds his adventure nearly at it's end in the wake of a fiery dragon attack on the human community of Laketown and the dwarves' return to their home deep in the Lonely Mountain. While dwarf leader Thorin (Richard Armitage) suffers from madness as he searches for an ancient gem, several races of Middle Earth prepare for a coming battle. Director Peter Jackson's final film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's story also stars Ian McKellen, Evangeline Lilly, and Orlando Bloom. Theatrical version; 144 min./Extended edition; 164 min. So this one is a story of pros and cons... Had the 4K sets or the steel books not come out couple of years ago? now... the pandemic distorts time... (it was probably less) this would have been received much better. It is not an ultimate collection by any measure and I should know because I have bought most of the sets created for this franchise. But it really is a puzzling packaging cash grab. Pros: If you don't already have the 4Ks this is a nice set. Con: But If all you want is the 4Ks you can get them cheaper. Pro: This also includes remastered blurays... they are not the same as previous releases. Con: In a set with the 4Ks, it's of dubious benefit to also get the blurays but they are better. Pro: Cool Packaging that is configurable multiple ways and has magnets to make it sturdier: Con: You pay a lot for that packaging and many of the configurations look a little weird because writing and pictures only match up well in certain configurations. Pro: You get an extra discount with couple of new featurettes, a set of "travel" cards and a small booklet about the costume designs(?) Con: They are nice but no one wanted these. Mordor is notably not in the travel cards (Isn't that the actual destination?) Yes, they made a card for each movie but they also threw us an extra for the set... leaving out Mordir is unforgivable. Likewise in the costume design book.. no Nazgul, No Sauron... half-baked. And again, not what anyone wanted anyway. What we wanted was an ultimate edition... include the 3D movies from the Hobbit, include the appendices from previous release, add more than two weak featurettes. Europe got a one ring in their set. We got digital copies. Why "either or" at this price point? Pro: Digital copies. Looking at you, 20th Anniversary Train Harry Potter 4K set... Con N Appendices. Pro: Can I recommend it? If this is your first buy, it's a quality set. This and the two bluray sets that look like Gilt books 1 for the Hobbit and 1 for the Lord of the Rings will get you all there is to get so far. Con: If you already own any of these sets you will chafe at the ultimate set that was far from it. You might want to wait for the Super-duper No Really Ultimate set down the road. The challenge is that with the demise of physical media that might not actually ever happen. In that regard, this may end up being the ultimate set as disappointing as aspects of it are.

At first I wasn't sure at first if I should buy this set (because of some reviews and some very interesting comments down here) but after watching an unboxing of this set in YouTube I knew I wanted this set. The movies look amazing, the box is so freaking beautiful, I love it.

It has come to me, the Middle Earth 6-Film Ultimate Collector's Edition in 4K. It shall be an heirloom of my Family. All those who follow in my bloodline shall be bound to its fate, for I shall risk no hurt to the Middle Earth 6-Film Ultimate Collector's Edition in 4K. It is precious to me, though I buy it with a great pain. The markings upon the collectible slipcase begin to fade. The writing, which at first was as clear as ultra high-definition, has all but disappeared - a secret now that only the extended editions can tell.

Like others have mentioned, the slip for the code redemption puts it good until the end of 2023. After contacting WB support and jumping through the hoops they required, I got legit codes and resolved that issue, so all was good. Sadly the same could not be said for my Game of Thrones 4k set that also had expired codes, but were past the date. WB is the only company I have run into so far that actually enforces these stupid code expiration dates and will not budge on them.

As for the set itself, it has nearly everything you could want. Although having both the Theatrical and Extended in 1 set feels a bit silly, because once you own the Extended, why would you ever want to watch the original short version. Anyway, my only other complaint is the complete lack of special features. While the bonus disk it comes with is cool, that is all there is in the way of special features, and that is only for the Lord of the rings, and has nothing to do with the the original movies in terms of "makings of" and so on. The only special features on the disks, are the simple trailers, and that is it. Usually you wont find special features on the 4K disks, but at least you get them on the Blu-Rays, but not here. For a set like this, you really expect a whole slew of special features for all the films, but there are none at all. Very sad for something that should be a "complete set".

I guess if you want any of this, you need to buy the original blu-ray copies or something. Otherwise it's a really nice, if not a limited set.

I love the set. Having all the movies in one spot. I just wish Mr. Jackson would release ALL the supplemental items in a similar package.

The collection of dvd's arrived today (two days early) in pristine condition. Outer packaging was good and inner protection around the collection was great. Delivery time was very quick. Pasadena to Exeter (5,500 miles) took just two days (well done Amazon US) but Exeter to Plymouth (42 mile's) took two days!!! This item will now sit in my collection to be handed down to my grandkids. 👍

This is one of the best versions of the trilogies to purchase. The only thing lacking is the appendices, but as most of us already own them in some other format, its completely fine. I'm more concerned about the films than the behind the scenes.

The previous 4K set for both LOTR & The Hobbit were all jammed into one case, which was really disappointing & not very appealing to my mind. This box set gives each film its own case, with beautiful & simple artwork that i find very attractive. Each film comes with the Blu Ray theatrical & extended editions, the 4K theatrical & extended releases, & digital codes as well, so there are many formats included in this collection

Its really everything i want for a collectors item. Beautiful box, beautiful cases, all the formats & versions of the films. Its a little pricey, but its worth every penny for my tastes. I keep it displayed at all times, but have the cases on my shelves with other 4k films. If you can afford it, go get one for yourself.

With this set, I couldn’t believe I got 3 different versions of the lord of the rings. Screen version, blue ray, and 4K, and let me tell you, the 4K experience is a whole new level of awesome! All the extras you get are amazing as well, for they have a lot of information for you. For a die hard fan, this is the box set you need. I love it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Movies, Iffy Cheap Packaging
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2022
I didn't have the a 4k UHD set previously for any of the movies so this set just for those was somewhat worth it, however I found the packaging to be disappointing. The surrounding packaging for each movie is just harder paper and is a little flimsy, one film sleeve was already damaged a little upon opening. I also noticed other marks here and there on a few more. The magnets that are nice and strong which is good, but seriously visible, there was a small indentation for each one so I could easily see their locations from looking at the packaging,

The cases are the standard 4k UHD cases, I did have 1 of the 4 prongs that hold the disc break off upon opening, I will keep the set simply because it would be a pain to have to return it back to the US but this was massively disappointing to see. As for the extras the special disc has its own nice little case, the postcards were surprisingly well made, quite thick about 2mm thick and had a small sleeve to hold them together and the booklet with the art was nicely made with great illustrations.

Overall its a good set if you don't own the films previously but the packaging very much lets it down. I do not take too much care for the special add ons but from what I've read they are disappointing. I own the more expensive 2016 set of the films with the 6 books and wooden shelf and even though I paid a lot more for that, weirdly that edition feels a lot more worth it than this one does.

I am crazy about The Middle Earth movies since their release, ut this collection is much more than I expected. The images are as great as they can be, and the extended version adds much to the Middle Earth story and explain many things that maybe did not make much sense in the theatre version.
