Edit: I should have added that the first sets I received had a battery issue. They seemed like they wouldn't hold a charge, even after a full charging. The battery meters would jump all over, and the radios would switch to low power. I contacted Midland Customer Service, and they were outstanding. It took a few days to figure out what was going on, but once they did, they sent me three brand new sets as replacements, and I sent the bad units to them. The problem was something with the battery contacts or something with some of the initial shipments. The new radios work perfect and I give an A+ to Midland Customer Service.
Update 8/8/14: Midland did discontinue these radios when all these problems came to light, but they have now started producing them again...I contacted my Midland support rep a couple of weeks ago (that I was dealing with before) to find out what happened and the changes made. I was happy to hear they were back. She explained the issue was in fact dissimilar metals on the radio and battery pack. They have redesigned the radios so they cannot use AA batteries.Read more ›
3 Separate orders over a 4 month period. First I ordered 8, then 2 & 2 more.
The first few weeks, the radios worked well, battery lasted a full day. Range was decent for indoor use and voice quality was decent as well.
after about a month, the first radio started failing.. At certain distance it would not receive or be able to transmit as well.
Over time, a second radio failed. Battery would not charge, meanwhile first radio battery started giving problems too.
We ordered another pair to replace the two radios that went out.
At this point some of the ones we got from our first order, started cutting out when transmitting.
At first we were thinking batteries we lose or defective. We tried everything, from rotating batteries to other radios and adding paper to stop them from moving.
Problem would still persist.
We could not find spare batteries anywhere, we called midland to see if we could order some directly and they claim, they do not make a spare battery yet (Aug 2013).
We ordered 2 new radios as one more simply stopped working within a few weeks more radios are now failing.
We use them in office environment. No contact with water, never dropped or abused.
OUT OF 12 RADIOS, TODAY ONLY 5 ARE STILL WORKING.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS.
I emailed Mildand and waiting to hear back from them.
After emailing back and forth with Midland, they are mailing me all new batteries for all the units.
One unit melted. Yes Melted (pictures posted)
They had me mail it to them at my cost. Still waiting to hear back about that.Read more ›
I haven't tested the range on these radios yet, but I'd imagine getting a few miles out of them on a clear day. They have really good clarity. Oh, and make sure you have a license if you plan on operating on the GMRS channels. I have one so I could use the full 5 watt power capability.
We plan on taking these with us on hikes, camping trips, and even when playing air soft.
