This book centers on Jim Morgan who leads the group of mercenaries and Noelle Phillip's who leads the group of assassins. Apparently, this story has been building throughout the series and I kind of wish that I had started from book 1 just to get all the build-up. However, with that said I still really enjoyed the book. This is a second-chance story and I do like the opportunity to read about couples given another chance to make things work. Jim and Noelle were involved almost twenty years ago when there love affair went bad, and by bad I mean crashed and burned and left them hating each other.
The plot of this book is that Noelle has been offered a million dollars to kill Jim Morgan and although she has fantasized about killing him often over the past 19 years she can't bring herself to do it and actually goes to warn him. Noelle and Jim end up working together to discover who wants Jim dead and their past finally has a chance to be put to rest but only if they can get past all of the pain and grief they have intentionally caused each other the past 19 years.
Jim and Noelle are both bad a** characters. They are tough and have learned to put emotions in a box and do what is necessary. They don't let their personal feelings get in the way of the job they have to do and a lot of times that means killing or using someone. In fact, Jim met Noelle when she was 17 and used her to get to her father who was his target. Her father was arrested and died a couple days later leaving Noelle feeling used and angry at her lover's betrayal. She took her revenge on Jim a couple year's later.
Noelle is probably one of, if not the most bad a** woman I have read about. She doesn't need supernatural powers, she's just a Kick A**, tough woman. She doesn't let people get close to her and assumes everyone is lying unless proven otherwise. In flash backs of her early romance with Jim, we see that this wasn't always the case and that she was once a sweet girl but Jim's betrayal changed the track her life was on.
Jim, is also a great character and an Alpha male. He is tough but shows us a vulnerability several times throughout the book. The only part I didn't get about Jim was why he had so much anger with Noelle, it seemed the "revenge" she took was completely justified and it takes a long time for Jim to "come around" to this.
Jim and Noelle hate each other, but it's a fine line between love and hate in this book. They are still wildly attracted to each other and the sex in this book is angry, raw and very intense. I wondered how they would ever get past their history and find a way to start again. Neither character was the same person they had fallen in love with so many years ago, especially not Noelle.
This book had a lot of action and intrigue and although I wasn't surprised by anything that happened it was well written. The secondary characters were interesting and getting their POV broke up the anger and angst in the book giving me a bit of respite so I could continue reading and read I did well into the morning hours to finish it.
This isn't an easy, comfortable read but it is an excellent one. Passion, anger, intrigue and romance all rolled up in a world that isn't black and white and the characters aren't always heroes. I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to go back and read the series from the first book. The characters are dramatic, colorful and little bit scary. If you like a little dark in your romantic suspense then this is a great book and I imagine series to read.
Midnight Action is the book you have been waiting for if you have been following the Midnight series by Elle Kennedy and boy she gives you everything you wanted and so much more. With the midnight series you find yourself hating Noelle though the series but when she find out what Jim did to Noelle you will want to put a bullet in Jim's head too. Just when you start to cheer for Noelle the author Elle Kennedy will have you caring for Morgan and your heart will be pulled in so many directions. She bring in all her characters from past book and as well as future books so that is fun to see what has been happening in the characters lives and how they have changed. Abby and Kanes lives are about to change and its makes for some funny moments in this book.
The author has the book bouncing between past and present for the first several chapters but she keeps the reader from getting lost. Elle Kennedy keeps true to her writing style with language and sex so be prepared if you have never read this series because it will make you blush from ear to ear. I love that Noelle doesn't understand why she can't kill Jim and Jim doesn't understand why he can't kill Noelle without feeling like they will be losing someone they hate. So instead they torturer each other whenever they are around one another; sometimes physically, emotionally but most of the time mentally.
If you have never read Elle Kennedy Midnight series books this one can stand alone but I would recommended you to read the others first so you can feel the hate these two people have for each other.
I love that Elle Kennedy is able to write intense action scenes that have you biting your nails and yet write other scene that will have you laughing out loud. I love the very end of this book Jim send Noelle a gift that is perfect for her but messed up for the rest of us again a laughing moment.
This book was well worth the wait.
I borrowed it from my Library and bought it a month later reading it again.
The book toggles between current day and the past of when Jim and Noelle first met and we see who betrayed who first and how that had far reaching consequences. We defiantly get to see different sides of these two. Getting to know Noelle before she become the hard hearted assassin was both interesting and heartbreaking. We are shown that she defiantly had reason to become what she did and Jim made many mistakes and his remorse over those mistakes made him become a surly man.
One of the catalysts of what happened between them 19 years ago comes front and center and makes these two have to face their past which results in lots of surprises and plenty of angry sex. These two are combustible whenever they are in the same room and Noelle defiantly isn’t so forgiving of Jim even though as the book progresses we see a huge changes in him.
As far as the other mercenaries and assassins boy the author entered in a surprising plot twist with two of the mercenaries and introduces us some new characters who I am sure will be getting their own stories in the future.
Sometimes when you’ve been waiting for a certain book for so long the potential to be disappointed is certainly a possibility. I am happy to say I loved Jim and Noelle’s story , it was so worth the wait.
