When a woman marries she is literally bound with a collar. This prevents her from doing magic that could harm any unborn children. Beatrice loves magic and loathes the collar but her beloved family requires her to marry a rich man quickly. This story examines the cost of love and freedom and comes up with a surprising answer.
The world that C.L. Polk has so lovingly crafted is familiar and yet utterly different from our own in many ways; it is sumptuous and creative. This story has such likeable characters, is at turns funny, romantic, and hearts wrenching.
I loved it. I will certainly be reading it again.
