I did like the basic plot. Yes, parts were very similar to Twilight and Vampire Diaries. But there were enough differences in the story to keep me interested. Yes, the editing was still poor (even though it stated that it had been updated in the Amazon description). And the jumping from one character's point of view to another was irritating. But still, I was involved enough in the story to keep reading.
This is a relatively short, clean, and sweet Vampire love story, with a nice amount of action to keep things moving along. Suitable for almost any age group, but perhaps a little slow moving for an adult.
I'll be giving a little Spoiler info below, including some of the issues I had with the book. So stop reading now if you would prefer.
Unfortunately, I didn't feel real connected to the rather shallow Heroine. The supporting characters were not very developed, with the possible exception of the two romantic male Vampires. Yes, there was a Love Triangle. The author did do a fine job keeping a reader undecided as to which male Shayna would, or should, end up with. As mentioned previously, I didn't really enjoy the editing errors, typos, or the changing point of views. But the gaps in the background of this story was what really brought it down for me. How could Shayna's mother NOT realize that her husband and the father of her twin girls was a Vampire? And she doesn't think it strange that she was told that she must continue to work at her hospital job so she can keep bringing home blood for Shayla to consume? Really? In a doggie bag, maybe? Why did the father leave his family? And if he was such a powerful 'natural' Vamp, how did a Changeling, and thus weaker Vampire like Cain, manage to kill him? Why is Shayla the Halfling Princess who will become Immortal by her 18th birthday, yet her Fraternal twin sister isn't in any way or form a Vampire? Why did Cain adopt the strange old witchy lady--who is she? And what's up with that horse?
Just too many holes in the world building and background for me to fully love this book. I can understand wanting to leave some revelations for the next book, but this was just too much lack of information. And it leaves off at the end with the Heroine starting to go through the change. As of this date, I don't see that the promised sequel has been released.
In conclusion: I felt that it had potential, but didn't quite reach it. I thought it was ok, but wanted to like it more than I did. Would I buy the sequel? If it was available now, I probably would. Since it isn't, I'll probably pass and move on to something else.
This review is only my opinion, of course; you might just love it. I admit that it's not a bad read, I just had some issues with it which brought down my rating. If you're undecided whether you should buy the book, note that the author has stated that a portion of sales will be given to a Veterans charity.
unfortunatly with this book its both. i cant get over the blatant rip offs of other books ( Twilight) and the horrible edit job. Words are mispelled ( some times missing altogether!) and there are commas everywhere! I can usually over look edit mistakes but this one needs an editor BADLY.
the main character is a stuck up snob who considers herself above everyone else and it really grates on my nerves. was a good try, but just did not hit the mark.
i only got about 2/3 through it and i just could not force myself to read it the rest of the way.
i'm really sorry for the bad review, but sometimes it just can not be helped.
on the upside, i really like the cover
