And you know that scene in Saving Private Ryan, where the one American soldier watches the other slowly get stabbed, and does nothing?
Midnight is a combination of those two things, for about two hours. It is one of the most frustrating movies I've ever seen. I had to pause this multiple times and walk around my house, because I was so angry at the characters.
Everybody in this movie is stupid and helpless. Except, of course, for the killer, who isn't so much smart as he is absurdly lucky. Everything goes perfectly right for him, at all times. Everything goes perfectly wrong for everybody else, and they just stand there dumbly watching it all go perfectly wrong.
The movie stars a mother and a daughter, both of whom are deaf, and neither of whom appear to have ever interacted with the world in any way. They are completely helpless, unable to communicate even the most basic concepts to others through pointing and gesturing. A few times, they use an app to draw words, and they send a few text messages, but that's it. At almost no time does the main character defend herself from the killer, or fight back in anyway, preferring instead to run while weeping. I thought we were past "helpless, dumb woman" as a Thriller plot point. In one of the most egregious scenes, her and her mother watch the killer nearly murder a cop in front of them, while clinging to each other dramatically in the corner. Then, while the cop is struggling under the killer, they just run away. THEY LEAVE THE BUILDING!
Also, I'm no expert on Korea or deafness, but I'm pretty positive they have SOME method for the hard-of-hearing to text 911, or the police. Nope. Never happens.
At the climax of the film, the main character runs into a crowded street while being pursued by the killer. She has blood on her clothes, no shoes, and she desperately needs help. In any other movie, this would be a relief. There's other people! She's saved!
Here, I just started laughing, because I knew exactly how it was going to play out - she would helplessly flail around, not communicate anything to anybody, and people would back away and gawk at her in fear. And that's what happened. Nobody helped her, because gosh darn it, she can't talk! She has a phone, and can write things down, and she can gesture with her hands. But she doesn't do any of that.
Everybody is stupid. If they weren't, the movie would be over in 10 minutes.
It also assumes that nobody in Korea has any idea what to do with a deaf person. One character in this entire film realizes that the MC can read lips, and speaks slowly and clearly to her, ONCE. He's also a complete moron.
No, actually, the murderer does that a lot, when he wants to threaten her. So, I guess that makes him the least ableist character in this film.
Cool movie.
This movie has the same, albeit faster paced feel of The Invisible Man, the pure terror of not being believed or understood.
