Such a beautiful book to hold and feel and curl up with on a rainy day! The illustrations and the writing are deeply evocative even though the sadness of the story. The recipes work, they are fun and loose enough that they are very forgiving of creative subbing with gluten and dairy free alternatives. There is a fair amount of dairy in some but there’s lots without and even if restrictions are an issue the writing and the illustrations and just the story and joyful, nourishing approach to food make it more than worth buying for yourself and anyone who loves cooking but isn’t too precious about it.

This is a beautiful and extraordinary book. I know other reviews will focus on the personal essays which accompany the recipes, encouraging and illuminating them, but I feel the need to mention the quality of the instructions in the recipes themselves. My partner, who does not cook and is afraid of it, read them and felt immensely reassured that somebody had written out things you actually need to know in order to cook, but which many cook books seem to consider too obvious to mention. There is an entire section of delicious things to make when you are busy and/or tired and/or haven’t been to the shops, which is the main kind of cooking that exists in life, in my experience. It is such a kind and compassionate book, and also such a compelling read that I stayed up far too late last night because I couldn’t put it down. I cannot wait to eat the tomato soup, the cauliflower cheese, the pikelets, and every recipe that involves ready-rolled puff pastry. It’s going to be a delicious 2019. I really cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This book is beautiful, relatable and has some amazing recipes. I love cooking so have all of the essentials stated in here, which immediately made me feel at home and that I could cook anything in it. The stand outs for me are the midnight chicken, drop scones and prawn pasta - all of which will be cooked this weekend.

I get bad seasonal affective disorder and find January - March tough, as a lot of people do. This book is an antidote to that, a reminder to just put one foot in front of the other and that it’s not abnormal to lie on the floor and feel like you can’t get up sometimes.

It’s a proper occasion read. It calls for deep armchairs, squashy cushions and food and hot cups of tea within arm’s reach. I can’t wait to try the recipes

The recipes are fab - the chocolate chip cookies are amazing and i love the skillet pie. Good for veggies too - I don't eat meat but a lot of the recipes can be easily modified and its so unpretentious - its perfect for those not confident with cooking - Just carry on. A really lovely book.

I adore this book. I've followed the author's work for a while - twitter, columns, articles - and I had high hopes for Midnight Chicken. It doesn't fit neatly into a genre but straddles the line between memoir and cookbook, with every recipe framed in some way within a memory of the author's. Reading it felt at times like glimpsing in on someone else's life (the best kind of writing); I could practically see the lonely house in Poland, the tiny London flat, the fireworks on the hill. It was a delight to read and so far it has been a delight to cook from! Everything I've made (the labneh and the eponymous midnight chicken) has been delicious and I can't wait to work my way through it. I will buy anything Ella Risbridger ever writes and I hope this book gets the recognition it deserves!

A treasure of a book

It would be easy for readers to think that this beautifully-designed and packaged book had been simple to put together, but as a writer I can assure you that by the time a book gets into the public domain it will have been through years of editing, rewriting, checking, changing and agonising. So I can truly see the amount of work that has gone into Ella's fantastic book. She is a natural writer - there is not a word out place - and her descriptions of childhood, of her love for The Tall Man and her much-documented breakdown, are poetic without being sentimental. The recipes are great too - unpretentious, easy to follow and described so temptingly that it takes a lot of will not to rush to the kitchen and start cooking straight away. Lots of simpler options for those of us who are busy, and those little genius touches (parmesan on green beans etc) which make cooking such a joy. I hope that Ella is busy writing another of these gems!

I don't have the words to adequately describe this book. I am totally and utterly in love with Ella's writing and just how beautiful the artwork complements everything in this book.

I love a good cookbook, and have what is quite frankly an embarrassingly large collection, but this one seriously trumps them all. Her words invoke daydreams of meals with friends and fond memories...

As Ella herself says 'This may have looked like a cookbook, but what it is really is an annotated list of moments worth living for. Dinner parties, and Saturday afternoons in the kitchen, and lazy breakfasts, and picnics on the heath; evenings alone with a bowl of soup, or a heavy pot of clams for one. The bright clean song of lime and salt, and the smoky hum of caramel-edged onions. Soft goat’s cheese and crisp pastry. A six-hour ragù simmering on the stove, a glass of wine in your hand. Moments, hours, mornings, afternoons, days. And days worth living for add up to months, and so on and so on, until you’ve unexpectedly built yourself a life worth having: a life worth living.'

If you are expecting a straightforward book of recipes, think again. Whether you are an experienced cook, or a novice this book will give you plenty of things to try and a lot of old favourites made simple. If you enjoy reading, this book will satisfy that need too. The recipes are accompanied by the stories surrounding their creation and memories from the author’s life. The background thread of life with the Tall Man is a tale of happiness despite the difficult times. Childhood recollections surrounding some of the recipes will revive similar memories in many of us. The simplicity of the approach, the advice for new cooks, and the permission to relax with food make this a great addition to anyone’s cookery library. The Paris Cookies are great and the Parkin delivers all that it promises. If you can follow the rule of leaving Parkin to mature for quite a few days then you are doing well. Too often we follow Ella in trying a slice as soon as it’s cool enough. I am looking forward to trying many more of the recipes in this book when I can tear myself away from the narrative which accompanied them.
