He meets Rosa, the tough commander in chief of the community, who rules all. She and the community have carved out a nice existence for themselves, she rules and everyone follows. The minute that Chris lays eyes on Rosa he wants her, the minute Rosa lays eyes on Chris she wants him, they have this instant connection that neither of them can understand. Only one thing stands in the way, Rosa is not willing to give up her leadership for any man, especially one who does not respect her leadership. She grants Chris access to the community for one reason, to use his medical expertise in trade for food and shelter. After being on his own for so long, Chris takes the deal, but finds it hard to acclimatise to living among humans again. Slowly Rosa and Chris give into their temptations but with roving dust bandits, demon dogs and inside mutiny, Rosa has more than her heart on her mind.
Rosa is rough and tough, and to be honest with you it look me a bit to warm up to her. I thought she was a bit of a contradiction, while she preaches safety and community, she readily turns away people and leads raids where they take peoples lives. But when we learn more about her story, and we get to see more of her softer and vulnerable side with Chris, I did come to like her more. Chris definitely grew on me, in the first book of the series I thought of him a weedy and boring, but in this book I have to say I loved him. He was strong and tough, and smart and caring, I loved it! He forces Rosa to open up, and to acknowledge and accept the connection between them, to just go with it. This is a new world and people have to learn to live in this new world, if they don’t they will not survive.
This is a good sequel to the awesome ‘A Dark Age Dawning’ series. Looking forward to reading Pen and Tru’s story in the 3rd book……..intrigued to see where they will go!
