Title: Midnight Flight to Nuremberg: The Capture ofthe Nazi Who Put Adolph Hitler into Power. Author: Marcus A.Nannini. Genre: Biography. LINK:

Midnight Flight toNuremberg: The Capture of the Nazi Who Put Adolph Hitler into Power followsFirst Lieutenant Harry E. Watson Jr., a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps duringthe height of WWII. Harry became known for his skill at flying inlow-visibility conditions, relying solely on his instrumentation and intuitionto get him through countless harrowing situations and too-close calls.

From delivering critical medical supplies throughGerman-infiltrated airspace, to performing paratrooper drops, where droppingeven half a second late would send men directly into the hands of the enemy,Harry was no stranger to high stakes operations. As the war progressed, and aseach mission became more dangerous than the last, Harry discovered his growingreputation as a risk taker. He was asked to complete a career-culminating,top-secret mission that would prove to be more dangerous than anything he'dbeen tasked with before.

Midnight Flight toNuremberg is a historical, non-fiction recount of Harry E. Watson'sexperiences during WWII. Black-and-white pictures placed strategicallythroughout the book range from personal photos of Harry and his comrades duringthe war, to representative images of what Harry had likely experienced. Theyprovide a historically-accurate account which allows readers to activelyvisualize the story.  The author strikesa good balance between telling Harry's story and providing interestinghistorical and military facts about WWII to vary the content and ensure thatreaders are not only entertained, but are learning something along the way.

The book begins with a brief prologue where the authordescribes how he was introduced to Harry and his general approach tointerviewing his subject, something he clearly excels at. The prologue servesto frame the story and provide a glimpse at the author's writing process andprogression of his relationship with his subject. It will prove helpful whenevents in the book become so vivid that readers may forget it's nonfiction.

One of the book's central themes, establishing Harry as aself-proclaimed risk taker, is shown early via vivid stories from his earlychildhood, where 10-year-old Harry squirmed his way into abandoned coal minesin Western Pennsylvania to collect enough coal to warm his family's home.Though he thought nothing of it at the time, the stories showcase Harry'spersonality and set the stage for his military career.

Though the compilation of Harry's stories can easily standalone, it is Harry himself who proves to be the heart and soul of the book. Heis smart, meticulous, and dedicated, which he proves again and again throughhis actions during each mission. Readers may find that by the time Harry'smidnight flight to Nuremberg occurs, the weight of the single event is farsurpassed by the book's other stories and themes. The title,
Midnight Flight to Nuremberg: The Capture ofthe Nazi Who Put Adolph Hitler into Power, doesn't quite accuratelyrepresent the focus of the book, nor does the content the justice it deserves.

The book provides a unique historical view of WWII,military terminology, aircrafts, and machinery, and life in the 1940's. Harryis the perfect protagonist to his own story, sharing with readers his harrowingexperiences during WWII that many can only imagine. Readers will find a perfectbalance of history and biography in
MidnightFlight to Nuremberg.

Nannini, author of
Left for Dead at Nijmegen, takes flight in this gripping account of courage in the air, the story of pilot Harry E. Watson, who flew 27 combat missions in World War II and was the recipient of seven Battle Stars and three Air Medals. Nannini, who interviewed First Lieutenant Watson extensively, opens this vivid account in the thick of the war, with the tense tale of Watson, already celebrated for his skill at bad-weather piloting, being tasked to fly "a plane-load of Jerry cans"—that's fuel— to General Patton's troops near the French city of Reims, on the front lines, "so they don't get themselves massacred" by the Germans. The fog's a beast, and there might be wounded to ferry back, and the adventure that follows will involve Mark IV tanks, 800 German troops, and French champagne in a foxhole.

Nannini proves adept at war-time storytelling, with an emphasis on bravery and camaraderie; his accounts of Watson's missions take an engaging novelistic approach, with memorable detail—the C-47s Watson flies, the "hot chow" the crews scarf, the rituals a superstitious pilot works into his routine—and a feeling for suspense. On a mission to evacuate a field hospital in danger of being overrun by the SS (from the mission briefing: "get 'em all the hell out of there"), the sight of a German Messerschmitt 262 jet fighter stirs in Watson and readers both a mesmerized awe and then deep alarm.
This inviting volume reads quickly, building to the top-secret, behind-enemy-lines mission of the title—"You're picking up some top Nazis, and they won't be happy about it, understand?"—rendered with clarity and power. Nannini excels at establishing the stakes, explaining crucial context like flight conditions, and putting readers alongside Watson in the cockpit. The reconstructed dialogue tends to be upbeat, sounding, perhaps, like Watson's own voice, sharing these stories. It's a pleasure to have them set down. The striking photographs offer welcome context.
Takeaway: The high-flying accounts of an American pilot's daring World War II missions.

MIDNIGHT FLIGHT TONUREMBERG is Marcus A. Nannini's biography of World War II First Lieutenant,C-47 pilot Harry E. Watson Jr.
How marvelous it is when history can be made to come alive, asit is in Marcus A. Nannini's biography MIDNIGHT FLIGHT TO NUREMBERG: The Capture of the Nazi Who Put Adolf Hitler Into Power. In it, the captivating World War II experiences of First Lieutenant, C-47 pilotHarry E. Watson Jr. are relayed in full living, breathing color, accompaniedoften by black/white photographic illustration of the characters and combatthat peopled Watson's life.
Pictures of a narrow road filled with slaughtered horses, as Germanarmies endeavored to retreat without air support or adequate tree line cover, are heartbreaking and touching letters to Watson Jr.'s first wife and son addjust the right amount of emotional content.
The highlight of Watson's adventures, as encapsulated by thebook's title, was perhaps the secret mission behind enemy lines to Nurembergwhere he was required to land in a deserted meadow, in the dark, in order topick up U.S. soldiers and prisoners-of-war including Franz von Pappen; agentleman who once convinced President Hindenburg to appoint first himself, andthen later Adolph Hitler, Chancellor of Germany.
If not for von Pappen — a spy indicted by a U.S. Federal GrandJury in 1916 — General Kurt von Schleicher (who, unlike von Pappen, opposedindustrialists profiting from the rearmament of Germany) would likely have beenGermany's Chancellor. But von Pappen supported industrialists, and he supportedthings like the Nazi Sturm Abteilung (SA) who had their own particular mannerof eliminating political opposition.
Accompanied by over 100 other key figures, Von Schleicher getsbrutally murdered during Germany's Night of Long Knives. All of which isstirring to read about, though really, the pages of this biography arejam-packed with plenty of other hair-raising adventures, as young Watson joinsother American military men seeking to do right by serving and protecting theircountry and the world.
Watson delivers Army nurses with supplies where they are neededat great personal risk to himself. He manages to evacuate a field hospital justmoments before the SS arrive, opening fire. Along the way, he loses friends, and sometimes even the belief that he will survive long enough to return tocivilian life.
Yet unlike many bittersweet tales of just how difficult it cansometimes be for war veterans to eventually return home, Watson's ultimate nextlife chapter as a Continental Airlines pilot is quite satisfying. A bit drylyfactual in spots, mostly this biography is a riveting read throughout.
Marcus A. Nannini's MIDNIGHT FLIGHT TO NUREMBERG: The Capture of the Nazi Who Put Adolf Hitler Into Power,is an emotional true story and an enthralling political rollercoaster ride.

"Midnight Flight to Nuremberg by Marcus A. Nannini begins with a biographical account of Harry E. Watson Jr., which gives readers a chance to understand his character and get to know Harry as a pilot. The story evolves as the story progresses and becomes more interesting as the main character follows through on several tasks and missions, ranging from something as mundane as simple milk deliveries to complex situations where he must learn to fight and defend himself in a war zone.

Throughout the book, the writer talks about the happenings during the war that we rarely get the chance to know about. A case in point is the experience of taking home prisoners of war and the lives of loved ones waiting for their beloved soldiers (fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons) to return. In Midnight Flight to Nuremberg, Nannini brings history to life by perfectly narrating the experiences of Harry E. Watson during WWII. The book is brimming with strategically placed black-and-white pictures of First Lieutenant, C-47 Pilot/Instructor Harry, and his comrades, representing their experiences throughout the war.

There's nothing more thrilling and exciting than reading about World War II and how it changed the world. However, the part where you read about Harry's involvement in capturing someone as influential and powerful as Franz Von Papen makes for an even more captivating read. The surreal writing style and details made me feel as though I was right next to Harry, and a part of his journey. Midnight Flight to Nuremberg is easily one of Nannini's most well-written and well-researched books; an enthralling rollercoaster ride for history buffs."

Midnight Flight to Nuremberg" Posted on December 17, 2021by Reader Views Reviewed by Amy Lignor for Reader Views, 12/2021

If you start thinking that this is "yet another WWII book," think again. I've read more WWII books during my lifetime than anything else. (Thanks again, Mom!)

Of course, with this book, I was also looking at an autobiography which, oddly enough, is not among my favorite genres. I have a perfectly good excuse for this; they're usually about wealthy men who suffer from 'greed' or people who want to share their journey to faith. After a while, this can get boring. But when it comes to this particular 'real' tale, I was riveted by the C-47 pilot and instructor, First Lieutenant Harry E. Watson, Jr, USAAF. And I mean, riveted! Not only does the author talk about this heroic man's rich history of being a pilot during WWII, he also delves into Watson's life in the U.S. Army, and even includes a more personal look into his home life and all the challenges, pride, and emotions that came from it all.

When Harry Watson, Jr. was a young man, he could see his future being that of a worker in a coal mine and wanted nothing to do with that career. Instead of following this path already etched in stone, Harry grasped his lifelong dream of being a pilot and enlisted in the U.S. military. Amassing many awards for his work, his amazing bravery, and his integrity and dedication, Harry Watson also made history when he took to the skies on a secret mission to pick up U.S. soldiers and prisoners of war and take them from Nuremberg back to base... without getting hurt. One of these prisoners was Franz Von Papen.

For those who may be unaware, Papen was high up in the German government and he believed Hitler could be controlled, so he persuaded the right people and eventually got Hitler appointed Chancellor while he served as Vice-Chancellor in 1933. Turned out Papen was wrong; he and his allies were tromped on by Hitler and the Nazis and Papen left the government after the Night of the Long Knives in 1934. Although Papen was later indicted in the Nuremberg trials of war criminals, he was acquitted of all charges. (See? That Jeopardy category would so be mine...)

This author, Marcus Nannini, focuses on Watson, and translates his tale in perfect fashion, making the book a truly action-packed story that holds the reader's attention. But this is not only for military history fans, because Watson's friendships with fellow crewman, Lang, and other people who supported him during his years—from the Army to the Air Force to his hometown—are also told with passion and depth that makes you want to shake Watson's hand, thank him for his service, and learn even more about his incredible background. In addition, the old photographs that include various Air Force planes, as well as sights of endless roads of death and destruction left by the Germans, touch your soul. And the loving letters Watson wrote to his first wife and son also brought extra emotion into the tale.
In the end, however, Harry Watson's risk-taking stole the show. Not only Nuremberg, we're talking about a man who did not back down in the face of any danger. From taking supplies to Army nurses in the field; to evacuating a hospital just moments before the evil SS arrived; to his horrific times during Operation Market Garden, where he lost one of his close friends to anti-aircraft fire while taking hits to his own plane - Watson was a true hero.

If you wish to read an exciting book filled with harrowing escapes and a great life that pays homage to one of America's bravest, "Midnight Flight to Nuremberg" by Marcus A. Nannini is the book you want! "5 Stars."

Marcus A. Nannini

Author Biography

In the sixth grade, Mr. Nannini began his writing career publishing a newspaper. His parents did not have a copier, so he charged 25 cents per school quarter for the privilege of reading the only hand-written copy of each edition. The newspaper was a modest success and planted the seed he might one day make a living through writing.

He was a paid newspaper reporter during his undergraduate years and worked three semesters as the Research Assistant to journalism professor Richard Stocks Carlson, Ph.D. Carlson advised him to write as if his readers have an 8th-grade education or less because he had failed to do so in his only published book, The Benign Humorists, resulting in disappointing sales.

Nannini is a life-long history buff with a particular interest in World War II and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He once discovered an error in his fifth-grade history book concerning the attack, which the publisher subsequently corrected. His first novel, Chameleons, An Untold World War II Story, was well received and awarded “Best Thriller” by International Thriller Writers.

Nannini’s second work, Left for Dead at Nijmegen, the True Story of an American Paratrooper (Casemate Publishers, Oxford, UK, and Philadelphia, PA), received plaudits from around the world, has been placed in the United States National Archives, and was named 2019 Nonfiction Book of the Year. 2020 IAN Best Nonfiction Book of the Year-History Category. Sir Charles, Prince of Wales, owns a copy.

Nannini’s third work, Midnight Flight to Nuremberg, the Capture of the Nazi who put Adolph Hitler into Power, was released in the UK and EU on September 17, 2021, by Pen & Sword Books (Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and Philadelphia, PA) and the USA and Canada in November 2021. On March 7, 2022, Midnight Flight was awarded the Overall Grand Prize for Nonfiction, 2021-2022.

Mr. Nannini also authors stories for Military History Now online magazine, History Magazine, World War II History Magazine, and others. You may contact him here:
