About the Author
Native New Yorker Deirdre Savoy spent her summers on the shores of Marthas Vineyard, soaking up the sun and scribbling in one of her many notebooks.
It was there that she first started writing romance as a teenager. The island proved to be the perfect setting for her first novel, Spellbound, published by BET/Arabesque Books in 1999. Spellbound received rave reviews and earned her the distinction of the first Rising Star author of Romance in Color and was voted their Best New Author of 1999. Deirdres second book, Always, was published by BET/Arabesque in October 2000, Always was a February 2001 Selection for the Black Expressions Book Club. Once and Again, the sequel to Always, was published in May 2001, and a third book in the series, Midnight Magic is a holiday 2001 release. Deirdre also won the first annual Emma award for Favorite New Author, presented at the 2001 Romance Slam Jam in Orlando, Florida.
Deirdre is a member of The Black Writers Alliance and African American Authors Helping Authors (AA-AHA). She lectures on such topics as Marketing Your Masterpiece, Getting Your Writing Career Started, and other topics related to the craft of writing. Deirdre is the founder of the Writer's Co-op, the writer's group sponsored by the Barnes and Noble near her home. Deirdre lives in Bronx, New York with her husband of 10-plus years and their two children.

Later, when Elise didnt return to the table, Garrett went to look for her. He found her upstairs in the room shed once shared with her sister Daphne. She stood by the window, facing away from him, looking out at the night sky. She clutched an ancient pink teddy bear in her arms.
Baby, what are you doing in here? he asked.
She whirled around to face him, obviously surprised. I didnt hear you come in.
Garrett stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. No matter what might be going on between them, Elise placed her childrens welfare above anything else.
I suppose youve come to plead Alyssas case.
She didnt add the words, as usual, but from her tone she might as well. Come on, Elise, she wants to go to a concert, not a brothel. Whats the big deal?
Dont be naive, Garrett. How do you think all those kids up in the nosebleed section entertain themselves? Even I know theyre doing drugs and drinking alcohol, and theres not a soul up there to monitor them.
But these are front row tickets, right there on the floor. And they have back stage passes for after the show.
Way to convince me to let her go. Like I want her meeting those people.
Elise sighed and turned away from him. For a long time, she said nothing, her head downcast. Honestly, I dont care about the concert. As long as we know who shes going with and she takes a cab home, I dont have a problem with it. But the manipulation I do mind. I get enough head games from the people I work with. I dont need any more from my family.
Garrett went to her and wrapped his arms around her from behind. Is that really whats bothering you?
She didnt trust us--trust me--to be fair.
Garrett huffed out a heavy breath. Elise blamed herself for Alyssas attempt at deception, but in truth, they were both to blame. When it came to the children, he was completely indulgent, giving them whatever they asked for. He saw them so infrequently that guilt motivated him to give them things since he couldnt give them time. If it werent for Elise reigning him in, the children would be spoiled rotten and uncontrollable. He did her a disservice by always making her the bad guy who ruined everyones fun. But he also knew she misread the situation.
Sweetheart, shes sixteen. And she has far less freedom than most girls her age. Im not complaining about how you handle things with her. But the truth is, we say no a lot more often than we say yes. And she really wants to go.
As I said, I dont mind if she goes.
He squeezed Elises waist. So that leaves us with the question of what to do about this dream vacation of hers.
Like either of us could just pick up and go on vacation. You have your patients and Ive got Judith McDonald and Vic Stamos to worry about.
When was the last time the two of them had done something spontaneous, unplanned? Why cant we? Ive got a light week coming up. It wouldnt take much trouble to cancel a few appointments. Robert and Matt Peterson could handle any emergencies that come up.
She narrowed her eyes and scrutinized his face. Youre not serious.
The incredulousness in her voice solidified his desire to go. Do you have anything pressing you cant get out of?
Elise shrugged. I guess not. Most people are too busy celebrating to worry about decorating.
Then why not?
Because it would be crazy, thats why. She tilted her head to one side. Youre not really considering this, are you?
Let me see: me, my beautiful wife, alone in a tropical paradise. What a nightmare!
She smacked his shoulder with the flat of her hand. You bum.
He caught her hand and brought it to his lips and kissed her palm. We havent had a vacation alone since Andrew was born.
Weve both been two busy.
He shook his head. Neither of them had taken the time to plan one. Its free. That should appeal to your sense of frugality.
Flattery isnt going to get you anywhere.
He slipped his hand under the hemline of her sweater and cupped her breast. He pushed aside the lace decoration of her bra and brushed his thumb across her nipple. He felt a surge of satisfaction when her breathing hitched and her delicate throat arched.
Stop it, Garrett, she protested, her voice breathy. I cant think when you do that.
Good. If he gave her too much time to think about it, shed say no. She was right, it was madness to pick up and go. But it was equally mad to say, to feel the life slowly draining out of their marriage and do nothing.
Come with me, Elise.
She sighed, lowering her chin to her chest. He held his breath waiting for her answer. When she lifted her head, a hint of a smile turned up her lips.
All right, Garrett. Lets go.

So, time together on a remote exotic island sounds like the perfect opportunity spend some quality time and rediscover one another, right? Maybe...but will it work?
Again, Ms. Savoy delivers. The love scenes and passion (especially when it's being rekindled) were wonderful. The chemistry between Garrett and Elise and how they fell in love will make you melt.
To get the full gist of the Thorne/Ward family, first read "Always" featuring Michael and "Once and Again," which tells Daphne's story. You won't be disappointed! Much respect, Ms. Savoy.
Wow! Deirdre has done it again with "Midnight Magic."
She has brought to her readers a tender love story between a couple who have been married for many years. This story will show how love is not always perfect, yet it can be. It shows how important the lines of communications are, as well as trusting your heart with your significant other. Deirdre's characters possess a unique passion even though obstacles threaten their happiness. Lastly she portrays that no matter how bad things may seem, with a little love, compassion and understanding, anything can be overcome. A great book for you and your love interest to read. Both will benefit from the love radiated from this REMARKABLE story. I give Deirdre two thumbs up!! WAY TO GO DEIRDRE!!
Such was the case with Elise and Garrett. Most couples, after 17 years of marriage complain that their sex lives have gotten stale and predictable. Not the case with Elise and Garrett. Things had always been fine in the bedroom. It was OUT of the bedroom that they had problems. Things that they should have been able to freely share with each other, became secrets that they could NOT share with one another. However, when they go on a holiday trip, both realize that things have escalated much too out of control and for the sake of their marriage, SOMETHING must be done.
While I did not agree with Elise's method of giving Garrett a wake up call, I understood her decision and the plot still kept me turning the pages to find out how they would resolve their conflict. Ms. Savoy did an excellent job of showing an ordinary marriage with ordinary problems. How does one save a basically good marriage that has gone awry? With secondary characters and island descriptions that added just enough flavor to keep you intrigued, Midnight Magic was a wonderful, easy read that at times made you laugh out loud, shake your head and keep turning the pages to see what would happen next.
Good job Dee!!! I look forward to reading your other novels and future novels. These are real folks with real issues and real ways of solving those issues. I highly recommend this read to romance as well as general fiction readers.
