Earlier this year, I’ve read a book by a – for me – new author, Sierra Simone. The book was called Priest, and it was a very sensual, somewhat forbidden, book about a priest and his sexual escapades with a woman new to his church. I love Priest, so I was excited when I learned a follow-up novella was being written. Midnight Mass certainly didn’t disappoint.

“Mine. Even after three years of marriage, that word still punctured me, pained me with the beautiful awe and wonder of it all. This woman, this polished, driven, smart-as-fuck woman, had chosen me.”

It is three years since Tyler Bell, or Father Bell as I still would like to call him, has left the church and priesthood to marry his beloved Poppy. Although he followed his heart, he still experiences moments of doubt and guilt. Guilt over what happened to his sister, guilt over failing as a priest and doubting if he deserves a beautiful, kind woman like Poppy. After leaving the church, Tyler is studying at Princeton University and writing his final thesis, while Poppy is busy with her own work at the charity foundation.

Tyler is at the brink of finishing his thesis, which takes up a lot of his time, so much time there’s almost no room left for Poppy and their life together. Poppy doesn’t complain, but Tyler knows she isn’t happy with their current situation. They still have very hot sex where Tyler is the dominant, almost dirty man we know from the previous book, but otherwise they don’t spent much time in each other’s presence. After Tyler has forgotten an important event from Poppy, due to understandable reasons, she finally has enough.

“I’d f***ed up. I wasn’t looking in the mirror right now, but if I was, I wouldn’t recognize the man standing there. He wasn’t a priest.

Father Bell and Poppy, 4 years later.

********SPOILERS*********

Is this different than the 1st one? Yes. Should it be? Yes. It has been 4 years. And, while we all applauded the decision at the end of Priest, Tyler changed his ENTIRE life. The humanity that is shown in the telling of their story is gripping, it makes you want to know where they will go, how they got where they are, and more importantly, why they will be ok in the future.

The story is well written. In some ways, I guess you can say it is darker...but as I think about that, I actually think that it is really a very similar tone. In the first one, he struggles with his identity as a priest, in this one, he struggles with his identity now that he is not a priest and tries to find his place in the new world in which he finds himself. I think telling his story, or their story, without including this would be a let down, would make Tyler and Poppy seem like less than real characters. The reason I was willing to invest in their story initially as that I believed they could be real people. In this story, they are real people.

Is this a darker story? Yes, it is. Although, there is not a lot all that "light" about a forbidden romance in which one of the characters is a Catholic Priest, so I guess I am surprised people were thinking it would be a light and easy read. It isn't. It is emotional, it will tear at your heart, it will make you cry. And, it will make you want to re-read Priest.

And, I have a confession: I liked this one better than Priest...

That's a good thing.

Gut-wrenching, thought provoking, devastatingly beautiful.

This novella was not at all what I was expecting. It was so much more than "A Day in the Life" of a couple we all fell in love with, but morally questioned why we did. What Sierra Simone gave us was something to mull over, chew on, and connect with in a deeply profound part of our psyche that doesn't always come out and play in our lighthearted HEA reads. I found myself playing tug-of-war with myself. This wasn't just a sexy foray into Father Bell and his golden Poppy's life which I will say, I'm equally happy and disappointed with. I loved the crazy tension between the two in PRIEST and would have loved more, but something about Midnight Mass spoke to me on an emotional level that I had not experience in book 1. Sure, Father Bell lives and breathes guilt, but this was so much more than that. The story, the life expressed within was heartbreakingly real.

There were moments where I could slip into either characters role as if it were a moment within my own life, but not all. And I think that's when you know you've read something that will stay with you. When there are facets of yourself seeming to be sewn into the story, but yet...not. Just enough so that you feel every word on a visceral level but are capable of separating yourself form the story too. Even as a writer, it's hard to explain.

I guess the end result is that it touched a part of me not every read does, and for me...that means more. Well done.

Midnight Mass wasn't at all what I expected. Where do you go after Priest? How can you possibly follow that erotic, taboo, sexy tale? You make the next one emotional.

Midnight Mass pulls at your heartstrings. Yes, it's sexy but somewhat angst filled. Tyler is working on his dissertation. It's a long time consuming process. He works late into the night, most nights, to get it finished. Poppy has her own work with her dance studio. Poppy and Tyler are still hot together, but now it's jealousy filled. They are finding their marriage can't stand on sex alone. Poppy needs more from Tyler. Is he capable to give her what she needs?

Midnight Mass takes you on an emotional roller coaster. There were definite tears by the end of this one. What got me almost has much as the book was the authors note at the end. It's considerate and touching. She explains why she finished like she did and it makes for a perfect ending for this couple.
