I didn’t want to put Midnight Moonrising down but alas I had to sleep at some point. This story was intriguing and unique, at least for me. I don’t recall ever reading a romance with a similar story line. If you haven’t picked up the prequel, Accepting the Moon it’s free and while you don’t need it to read this story it certainly wouldn’t hurt to read it first.

In Midnight Moonrising Mena has recently been forced to kill her husband in self-defense, in the process she was bitten. Now having accepted the moon and fighting off a challenger she is the acknowledged Alpha, Queen of her pack. But life isn’t a smooth ride from there out. Mena is swift falling for the Vampire King of Montgomery, Phoenix and as swift as she is falling her wolf is setting up road blocks. Mena has to contend with her wolf’s very real threat to kill the man she is coming to love. In the meantime pack protocol requires that she select a new beta before the next full moon rising. A few contenders would be one thing but she is presented with over twenty. Were that not enough, her wolf has decided that she has her heart or ambitions are set on the homicide detective, Alex who is assigned to her husband’s murder investigation. Talk about a conundrum. One, need I say it again… he’s human. Two, oh yeah he’s assigned to her husband’s murder… Oh duh, can anyone say prison sentence? Life gets really challenging for this ménage-quartet. I mean physically there are three of them but mentally it’s a whole other ball game. Add to this a rogue faction in the pack that are out for vengeance and a take over and you are set up for plenty of action, sexual tension and suspense to last well beyond this book.

Midnight Moonrising is like Twilight all over again. That's a lie. The only way the two books are similar is that they both feature vampires and werewolves working together to protect the female lead from a psycho that is trying to kill her (yes, I realize that is the plot of Eclipse not Twilight). Midnight Moonrising did frequently make me think about the Twilight saga while I was reading though.

One of the things I always enjoy when reading a K.S. Haigwood book is being pulled into the story so that I feel like I'm in the main characters shoes. This book was no different. I was right there with Mena having arguments with myself (which wasn't much of a stretch for me to begin with) and just about everyone else that thought they knew what was best for us. Some other highlights of the story for me is that it features more traditional vampires (they can't be out in the sunlight) and Mena is a total bada**!

Overal I give this book 4 out of 5 stars because it kept me entertained and turning the pages.

I loved this well crafted story. The plot is intricate, complex and highly entertaining with tons of sizzle, humor to keep it light and enjoyable. The tale is interwoven with enough intrigue to keep you eager to see what happens next. These authors do a fine job developing the characters and setting the tone throughout the book. The chemistry between all of the primary characters is very entertaining.

The narration on this audio book was very good and adds a richness to the story, which I had read before obtaining the audible edition. I highly recommend this story in all of it's forms. I'm off to read Andromeda's Reign!

I realized very quickly that Mena’s wolf is a "B". It’s like an invasion of the body snatchers. Mena stays in constant turmoil.

“I don’t need your help!”
”Yes, you do, Mena!” I’m not going to let you get us killed. Whether you like it or not, this is my body, too, and I aim to keep it alive and out of prison!” she shouted back as she flung a small suitcase onto the bed.
”Your body is hairy and has four legs, b@#th!”
”Screw you—“

In comes Alex, the detective over her husband’s case. As soon as Mena’s wolf meets Alex, she claims him as hers. Which forces Mena into a very strange predicament. Mena is in love with Phoenix. So the two come to an awkward agreement. She gets Phoenix, then her wolf takes over her body, so she can have Alex.

Phoenix is not real, keen with this agreement as one might imagine.

As soon as her pack learns of her wolfs ability to control her, they frantically seek out another alpha that can demand the wolf call out her name. This will enable her wolf the inability to speak or possess her body. A nameless wolf is known as a Moonrising wolf, and is considered a danger and an abomination. If they can not find another male alpha willing to bond with her before the next full moon, they risk losing her forever.

Now finally meet Ace. The cocky, lion shifter from Las Vegas. I admit I didn’t like him. Phoenix is clearly heartbroken but knows that this is the only way. Once the bond takes place they will be mated for life. Throw in the fact that Alex believes Mena is in love with him also and yep, you guess it one big, epic, love triangle.

There are so many layers to this story. It’s complexity will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Favorite Scene: When they meet the witches for the first time.
Favorite Quotes:

You are everything I never knew I wanted.”
