“Midnight Never Ends” by R. Patricia Wayne is a coming of age story about sixteen year old girl named Samantha Bauer. Samantha is handpicked for a mission to Europa, Jupiter’s moon. We learn in the prologue that Sam is picked for the mission before even graduating as a communications specialist, and she does not know why. The mission’s security officer Commander Alexander Locke lost a sixteen year old girl on another mission and is unable to recover from the guilt. His commanding officer General Kym Kurtz is persuaded to let Locke be in charge of security for this mission to help him get over his grief. Samantha (Sam) shares the same characteristics as the sixteen year old girl that Locke lost. Their interplay throughout the novel is both uplifting and sad at the same time. Sam does not realize the joy and hurt she brings to Locke.
Throughout the mission to Europa the tension heightens between the crew and between Locke and Sam. The mission itself is perilous. There is a strange signal coming from Europa where no life should be. As the reader turns page after page tension builds.
“Midnight Never Ends” is second to last in R. Patricia Wayne’s “Double Helix” world; however, it is a standalone tale of growth and survival. If the reader wishes to begin at the beginning of this world, a helpful appendix is included with the names and dates of the stories beginning with the year 2227 to the year 2259.
