Excerpt:In her world of pain, her beauty was her only card.Harrison St. Claire, Earl of Westal, in need of some fresh air and a respite from the oppression of his thoughts, had escaped the masquerade ball revelers and slipped away to the dark garden, which except for a group of men by the doors was almost deserted.
He pulled his mask up above his head and ran a hand down his face.
It was windy in the garden and the fresh air felt cool against his hot face and drifted the soft combination of roses, jasmine and honeysuckle toward him. It was certainly a better scent than the heavy perfumes spewing from the overly dressed guests.
Lost in thought, he turned as he felt someone approaching.
A lady appeared, coming out from the garden mist that swirled about her.
Westal started in surprise. She seemed to be walking in his direction, her eyes intently on him.
She removed her mask as she neared him and Westal saw her face by the light from the long windows. The hood of her cloak fell back over her shoulders as she stopped before him.
Harrison was stunned by her. She looked like the figurehead of a ship as the wind blew the long tendrils of her dark golden hair about her and flapped at the lowered hood and cape.
The girl's lovely eyes on him were wide with recognition. Joyful recognition.
Yet Harrison was certain he didn't know her. That girl was not one you could easily forget.
She had jewel blue eyes the likes of which he had never encountered in his life and her lovely mouth on the translucent skin of her face, was beyond beauty.
He gasped, realizing he had stopped breathing as he beheld her and almost choked as he regained his breath.
He had not known that a woman could be in possession of such heart-stopping beauty.
She locked her glance with his, touched his arm lightly and whispered:
"My lord--I am in want of a husband..."A sensual explosion spread throughout Harrison at the touch of the girl's hand on his arm, as if she had touched him with a hot poker.
During the seconds following, he felt as if they were locked in time, in a place apart. She was familiar and yet unfamiliar. While time seemed to have stood still."Have we met before?" he finally asked through a tight throat.

Not your Run of the Mill Regencies!

I must say this was quite a fresh outlook on a simple Regency historical romance. The heroine was in extreme dire straits and her life was going to be hell if she hadn’t had the support of a loving aunt who gave this young woman the strength to save herself. All she had to do was convince the Earl of Westal to agree to her outrageous proposal. Without giving too much away in spoilers of our heroine, Veronica Glendalion, you can only surmise that her future looked extremely bleak and short if she couldn’t convince the Earl to help her.

In a normal world Veronica might have been turned away immediately as a crazy person for approaching an almost complete stranger – the Earl of Westal, a member of the nobility – but she had met him as a child and hoped that he would remember him saving her from a bunch of bullies. However, what helped her case was the fact that the Earl’s mother had been trying for years to marry him to another whom he had absolutely no interest in. Other than the fact that Westal was quite taken with Veronica’s striking blue eyes, he definitely wanted to help this lady in distress!

Frankly, I truly LOVED this story, the pacing, the suspense, the characterizations, but due to some portions of the book being repeated and poor editing I can’t give this a a higher rating. The story itself is a 5* but overall I have to give it a 4*…

I loved the story very much it took me on an exciting journey in the 1800 hundreds stopping at inns and eating
in the carriage while escaping from a tyrant father and the forced marriage he planned for her.

Another fun read by this author. Summer is here and it is my favorite time to get lost in a fun book. Lots of intrigue, tension, and plenty of romance in this fast moving plot.

A fantastic yarn, had a job to put it down when I needed to do other things, couldn't wait to read what happened next. A nice change from the usual stories, a shame we didn't read a bit more on the duel and what Olivia did after, also what did Veronica father get up to after all the events that took place?.

I normally finish all books I start, but really couldn't with this one. Whilst the grammar and sentence structures were ok, there was just too much confusion in the whole book. I had trouble deciphering seemingly endless soliloquies, which would often run into multiple paragraphs with poor punctuation or no indication of the source of the thought or speech. In addition, these thoughts or speeches would end up going around and around and be repeated ad nauseum. Incidents and events were mixed up, eg. the runner that was supposedly watching the house decided that after he'd followed the heroine to the masquerade ball, he'd had enough that night and went home to bed, yet in the next chapter (which was apparently still the same night), he had suddenly followed the heroine to where she had gone after the ball and could then rush off to send an express message to the evil Earl?!? Express messages seemed to play a large part in this book with hordes of riders ready at the drop of a hat to speed ride all over England with an important missive. The writer seemed to jump from one scene to another, to a third scene and then back to the original scene again a little later or at the beginning of the next chapter to continue that first scene. Finally, there was no tying up of loose ends - what happened to Lady Olivia and Harrison's mother? Did Lady Olivia get her just desserts? Often free or KU ebooks are ARCs, but I'm not sure I could even count this book as a first draft. Too confusing, I'd recommend reading something else.
