The house comes with the village headman's sixteen year old daughter, Ysetta, who was learning the use of herbs from the mage. Amber soon learns that it also comes with the revenant of the mage and that he had been teaching Ysetta about more than herbs.
The mage wants to be returned to a life he had only meant to leave temporarily. Ysetta wants him, or at least her image of him, back too. Amber is faced with an ethical dilemma in doing what they both want. Plus, the time when the spell can be reversed is limited.
Waters brings all the characters (including the temporarily deceased mage) to life with her usual flair and leaves the reader smiling.
