Midway is a true classic, a great film representing many classic elements from the 70's. It's a Universal Picture with an all star-cast, produced by Walter Mirisch, with John Williams music, tons of up and coming future stars, and with sensurround thrown in. It tells the straight up story of a crucial battle in the war, and the blu ray presentation is spectacular. It has all the extra features you could want, even with some of the extended scenes from the tv version, and really gives you the whole picture of the film, putting you right back in time both in the war and in the decade when the movie came out, alternately. I love all the performances-Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Hal Holbrook, Robert Mitchum, Toshiro Mifune, James Shigeta, Pat Morita, and Glen Ford are all standouts in particular. Of the younger cast, Kevin Dobson stands out in particular as George Gay. It's the great kind of picture that Hollywood used to turn out regularly but produces much more rarely now. Definitely recommended.

This was made in the 70's and it shows, but it's an interesting account of the actual battle of Midway. I like that it portrays the Japanese as being just as intelligent, capable, and courageous as the Americans, so they are worthy adversaries to one another. Some reviewers complain that the film is missing several minutes, but this is actually NOT the case! If you go to "Bonus Materials" the extra footage is provided. It was never part of the original theatrical release. The extra scenes were added much later, when the movie was going to be shown on TV, and they were unimportant to the plot. They're just fill-in material to lengthen the film in order to make it easier to break it up for TV showing. Sit down with some popcorn and enjoy the star-filled epic. It's great to see so many big-name stars and so many supporting stars who later became famous!

Upgrading my old DVD collection of old war films to BluRay editions. This is a good copy / rendition. Definition is slightly improved over the DVD copy. Film is very close to the facts of the Midway battle (Hollywood style) with some of the finest old Hollywood stars. Original film footage of the war was used in many cuts of the film as well as footage from an earlier movie Tora Tora Tora. Overall, well worth the upgrade to BluRay.

This is a great film. I had seen it many times on TV and thought it dragged a bit. However, without commercial breaks, the pace was excellent. The acting was uniformly compelling. Charlton Heston's fictional character linked all of the historical US commanders to the story line. The inclusion of the internment of Japanese Americans was important because few of us have ever even considered this blight on our history. The depiction of Japanese pilots and naval officers was respectful. Based on what I know about this critical battle, the film was historically accurate. Even though I knew the outcome of the battle my heart sank as one American pilot after another was shot down. My SCTV and stereo system provided good image and sound quality. The Coral Sea engagement was mentioned but not shown. This battle blunted Japanese expansion in the south Pacific and set the stage for Midway. If Coral Sea footage exists, I hope it has been preserved, because I doubt that any movie company will ever make a film of it. The special features were good.

Really doesn't hold up when compared to other war classics. Good World War II film is a hard bar to clear, but this one doesn't come close. Henry Fonda and Charlton Heston are really good, but most of the supporting cast is abysmal. And once the actual battle starts, the frantic switching between film footage and documentary footage makes following the events completely impossible. They were going for authenticity but it kind of just felt cheap. Such important events deserved much better story telling. Maybe they should have focused more on characers than making sure they told every moment correctly minute-by-minute.

I've always enjoyed this film and perhaps even more now that I have built and flown a TBD Devastator (rubber band powered....free flight). I can't imagine Hollywood trying to create this film today. They don't have the planes and they would just cartoon the action instead. But there is no getting around having Charleton Heston and the other great actors of those days. Who would you pick for today? I can't think of a one. But I'm of that generation born after the war that grew up being influenced by the men who were there. They may not have talked of it. Their actions and the way they carried themselves told me all I needed to know about their character and what they went through. These actors do the same. A classic to have and watch at least once a year.

Midway is a dramatic and accurate portrayal of the turning point of the Pacific war against Japan in WWII. Vice Admiral Bernard Strean provided the authenticity to blend the war film footage with the movie footage to give the movie-maker experts the ability to make it real. This event, the "Miracle at Midway", tells the story of our great naval leaders and men who won through their intelligence and courage. The film acknowledges that luck also came our way. The final line, "Were we better than the Japanese, or just luckier?" is answered by the American spirit and hard work combining to take advantage of every break that came our way. This is a story which needs to known by every American and it is told in Midway in an unforgettable way. Sometimes a film comes along that reflects the best of America, and Midway hits the nail on the head. Hats off to Admiral Nimitz and the men of Midway and thanks to the people who made this truly important film.

Great cast, great story, great movie. Any star in my WWII movie collections. I rank it up there with "In Harms Way" and "Tora, Tora, Tora." It was interesting to watch the bonus feature that shows what was added to the movie for the television airing. I'm glad that part was not added to the original movie because it really, in my opinion, would have distracted from the intensity of the original story line.

Seems like Universal finally got the soundtrack right. Too bad they didn't remaster the Special Features in anamorphic format but it'll do. The Sensurround doesn't feature any booming bass but it is leagues better than the DVD. Great set of extras all ported over from the DVD and the film has been cleaned up. The real war footage is still worn but that's to be expected. I'm sure they weren't setting up these cameras for lighting and angles in the midst of battle.

The movie is based on the 1942 United States Naval victory near Midway Island against the numerically superior Japanese naval forces which was considered the turning point of the War in the Pacific. The movie has an impressive cast which includes Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, Cliff Robertson, Charlton Heston and many other familiar faces (Hal Holbrook, Robert Wagner and Erik Estrada!). But the story takes center stage here and it does a good job of following the actual events leading up to the battle with appropriate suspense and drama. The movie is pretty good but far from great.. The special effects looked horrible and amateurish and the use of actual combat footage feels inappropriate and mostly doesn't fit with the sequence or location. Still, I'll only deduct one star because I think it's a good war film that's guaranteed to entertain all the way thru. Highly recommended!!
