This little oscillating steam engine and boiler combination may seem a bit pricey. The parts are basically stock materials but they are machined precisely and assemble without trouble. Only simple hand tools are required. The boiler requires soldering with a torch. The instructions are complete and throrough.

The boiler uses Sterno for fuel, heats quickly, and is relatively reliable.

While not as pretty as some, it may be just the ticket for someone without access to a machine shop and a tenth the price. I have had mine for 11 years.

I love this model steam engine - I am not using it for a marine engine but rather for a stationary engine to drive some toy steam accessories - I had to modify the flywheel but its working okay. It would be nice in a ship or boat model but I am not a good wood craftsman.

Got this kit for a birthday present. I loved every minute of putting it together. As others have said, the copper on the boiler is very easily scratched and dented. My kit was also missing the alcohol/sterno burner like several other reviewers. This is the only reason I only gave it 4 stars. I just made my own alcohol burner and it worked great. You do need to know how and have the materials to solder the copper and bronze fittings. Or just figure out how to do it along the way. For me it is all part of the fun. You will also need either a buffer wheel, or progressive sheets of fine sand paper to get the metal to a nice shine. All and all, this is a worthwhile and fun kit if you are willing to do a bit of work.

this requires a little bit of soldering if you're not good at soldering copper you might have difficulties. I also went beyond the instructions when building be steam engine and very carefully flattened and smooth the contacts between the piston and valve assembly. It works very well it is installed and a model boat and operates better than expected stronger and faster than I had spected as well.

A major component of the kit was missing from the box--bag #4 with the boiler stack tube. This was a birthday gift for my son and it was very disappointing to give him a gift that did not include all the parts. He has been waiting months to get this kit. Whoever inspector #71 is at Midwest Products did not do a very good job of inspecting the kit before packaging!

Cool little project and it works! My kids and I built this for the fantail launch boat, and we were able to do it with only one small hiccup. We accidentally bent and then broke the original drive shaft and had to replace it. Luckily it is just a small section 1/8" brass rod that can be found at the local hardware store.

The instructions were very clear, and the parts are well organized. My 9-year-old was able to do most of the assembly herself (including the soldering) with some guidance and instruction from me.

If you buy this kit... We reversed the order of a couple steps and made the project easier. For instance, we put the flywheel on the driveshaft first, and it went together easier, without bending. We also bent the little brass steam line that comes out of the boiler before we soldered it on. That prevented us from accidentally dropping it into the boiler, and it was easier to bend smoothly since it wasn't attached yet.

It was a good purchase and I would recommend it to any handy parent who has a young tinkerer.

Still building it but the directions and quality seem outstanding. Be careful opening the plastic bags, I lost one small part and had to order a replacement.

The base unit had reversed steam holes and the fuel cup was missing in both kits we ordered: one was for my son and the other was for his friend's birthday. When the missing pieces were discovered, the Midwest Products Company customer service people had already heard about the problem with that batch of orders and said our replacements would be shipped out as soon as they came in. We received them a few weeks later.
