From Puppy Training. ..
To a Home for Life!
A crate provides a personal, den-like space for your dog to call his own, and it also helps with housebreaking, potty training, and reducing unwanted behaviors like chewing and barking. Choose a crate that will provide adequate space when your dog reaches its’ full, adult size, large enough to stand up without having to hunch and to lie down with legs outstretched. However, don't buy a crate that is too large -- it won’t provide the feeling of safety and security that a dog enjoys in a properly-sized crate.
While your dog is a puppy, the crate may be too big, leading him to eliminate in one end then go to the other end to sleep; divider panels are designed to solve this problem!
- Use our size-breed chart to determine the appropriate size crate for your breed.
- Choose a crate that will provide adequate space when your dog reaches his adult size.
- Use the divider panel to adjust the length of living area as your puppy grows.
- Acquaint your puppy with his new home. Start from early puppyhood and have your puppy sleep and rest in his home. He will begin to seek security and comfort inside his little 'dog room.'
- Be gentle. Encourage your puppy to go into his home. Don’t force him!
- Once he is comfortable with his home, simply restrain him at the door with the door, praising him lavishly. Soon he will be secure in his home with the door closed.
- Understand that little puppies need to 'go' about every 2-4 hours. On a schedule, (such as after feeding, before bedtime, first thing in morning) let your puppy out, teach him the route to the door, praise him at the door and take him out to the part of the yard you want him to use. Very quickly you are teaching him an elimination schedule that will stay with him for the rest of his life.
- Supervise your pup anytime he is free in your home. Supervision is what allows you to direct behavior.
- Never punish your pup by putting or forcing him into his home. Your pup’s home should be his secure place, it should not be associated with punishment, fear, or anything negative.
- Visit midwesthomes4pets website for additional information on crate training and housebreaking.

Top Customer Reviews
My non-alpha 60lb Weim puppy bent the metal bars and even broke a bar one loose in one spot! The bars seem way too light for a crate this size. I can easily bend them with my hands and my dog can easily bend the bars with her teeth. When new the door seemed to be a loose fit when closed and bolted. Now it's really loose.
Naturally, a big crate means you will have a large breed animal in it, and likely a very strong animal as most large breeds tend to be! In this case, my dog is a high-energy hunting dog, but still a puppy. Ands even a pretty timid non-alpha at that! My dog even managed to squeeze out on one occasion, and on another occasion banged against the door long enough to move the latches to the open position. I can't imagine what imaginary dog they strength-tested this crate on!
I have owned several Midwest crates, and they all been made with good quality heavy-gauge bars until now. If this is the same wire gauge used on smaller crates, then it's just bad engineering. It should be proportionally larger especially given the fact that as dog breeds get larger their energy potential proportionally grows.
After some additional research today to figure out why this happened, I see that Amazon omitted some KEY INFORMATION. Nowhere on this listing did it mention this is a LIGHTER VERSION of the Midwest LIFE STAGES model, and even if it did, I probably wouldn't have picked it up in the dense amount of copy for this item. I honed in on this one and bought this because it had a side door. I see that the LIFE STAGES crate is more heavy-duty. Also just noticed that it does mention this on the Midwest site, which I did not go to to purchase this crate. I only shopped on Amazon for my information where they failed to include key information. I also feel like Midwest should have reviewed the listing and caught the lack of key differentiators between two similar products. It's not abundantly clear on their own website. So many with similar product offerings fail at this these days. It's simple: call out the major differences between the two very similar products. Even the comparison shopping feature on amazon.com fails at this!
Little did I know the crate would be such a HAZARD! Unfortunately this happened as the dog grew and became stronger, and the return time period has lapsed. I would still like to exchange this for the heavier model, but now I'm wondering if Midwest is even a quality product any more. The loose fitting door makes me wonder. I need to get this crate out of my house before my dog is seriously injured! I think Midwest is a great company, but someone dropped the ball in a major way and I'm stuck with a POS crate.
We opted for the single door option as additional doors aren't necessary for our use. Here are a few observations after 2 months of use:
Installation: "A", just unfold it and snap it into place. Took less than 10 minutes and was ready to go.
Quality: "B+", pretty sturdy build, but the hinge/lock mechanism rubs against metal and causes the paint to scratch off easily. Also, our husky hasn't chewed the bottom tray like she did with the kennel we had previously (major plus, lol). Not all wobbly, which also a plus.
Price: "A+", unbeatable. Half the price of big box retailers.
Overall: "A", for the price, you cannot beat it. It looks like it will hold up well over time. It's Husky-tested and owner approved!
