It is an interesting story with a good deal of action concerning the rivalries and feuds between the various clans on the English/Scottish border. The reader soon finds that there are more mysterious goings on then a simple rumor of a huge hound. The descriptions of the countryside and weather are very realistic. One gets a good look at some of the 16th century ways of life on the Northern border. I had thought that this book would be more about the Elizabethan theater, actors and the goings on backstage. That was a bit disappointing but never the less it was an interesting novel.
My only regret. for now, is that I have read all of the books available from this highly skilled author and must wait patiently for his next publication. May it come soon!

Married as I am to someone who is descended from at least two of the big reiving families, and probably more of them, the whole atmosphere of the period fitted with all I have learn of that history - and in the midst of this setting, and these people, is Tom attempting to solve a murder mystery involving the death of his own brother.
I really, really, want to know more of the women in this story - I do hope book 4 will throw some light onto what becomes of them in the days and months after this book ends.
I had noted the Baskerville type story and thoroughly relished in its telling. Tonkin creates such an atmosphere in his books that you are truly riveted AND on the edge of your seat. Here's an author who clearly researches EVERYTHING! The weapons, locations, history & geography are beautifully detailed.
Tom Musgrave has fast become one of my favourite literary characters. Thanks also to @endeavourpress for digitally publishing this and many other excellent books.
