** Stainless steel telescoping wand which allows you to effortlessly slide it in and out (like a trombone), to set the absolute best height between your hand and the floor, which totally negates back strain (I am 6'-2" and can maneuver this wonderful thing in a totally upright posture without hunching forward or leaning down). And the glide action in the telescoping wand is as smooth as silk, with a self locking, spring loaded finger button which engages the adjustment depression stops, in the upper wand, every 3/4", for 19 click increments, from short to long. So it telescopes in a manner that the distance from the handle to the floor attachment is 48". Then, by depressing the spring loaded finger clip (located at the top of the lower wand section), you can shorten this distance, for shorter people, to 32". This wand flexibility is EXCELLENT for doing, not only basic floor vacuuming, but also upright tasks, such as vacuuming drapes and upper surfaces, near the ceiling. Use the short telescope for close up and the full extension for getting cobwebs, etc off of the ceiling. Very versatile.
** The handle (which is raised up, off of the top of the wand, kind of like a gasoline pump handle, but open at the back end closest to the user) is sized and positioned perfectly, for comfort and maneuverability of the wand and vacuum head. Besides the main power button on the canister, there is also a convenient thumb-activated, on/off button on the handle, which disengages the rotary brush in the vacuum head, for those instances when you move onto solid surface floors and don't wish to change the suction settings, or when you simply want only suction on the carpet, without the brush rotating. Very smart and handy feature.
** The vacuum head swivel at the base of the wand, works the same way as a Dyson Ball. Turn the handle to the right or left and it causes the brush head to turn and travel in the same direction, right or left, that you moved the handle. This minimizes the amount of arm effort needed to redirect the path of the vacuum head. You can stand in one place and cover a lot of area, back and forth in wide sweeps, without moving your feet. And the fantastic thing about the swivel head, is that, by rotating the handle, so that it is at the 3:00 or 9:00 position (while at the same time, lowering the wand down, close to the floor, you can get under any furniture or obstructions which have a clearance of only 3" above the floor, which is the height of the rotating brush vacuum head). You can also twist and turn the handle in either direction, underneath furniture (sofas, buffets, etc), to easily move the head, in all directions, to get to all of the surface areas to be cleaned, under obstructions. I was pleasantly surprised about the ease and utility of this function, especially since I have some very heavy wood furniture, which can't be moved to clean under. Instead, I have to get out a dust mop, on my hands and knees. Well, not anymore. I can't do that with any other vacuum. Another feature which adds flexibility is that, not only the vacuum head swivels, but also, where the flexible suction hose snaps into the canister....the hose can rotate 180 degrees, which aids in not having the hose fight you, by getting into a twisted bind, when you maneuver the wand and the canister in different directions.
** Suction settings are versatile, with 6 different levels of suction. The lowest suction level will allow you to vacuum drapes and sheers without sucking them into the vacuum. And the air velocity can be increased to the maximum setting, for hard surface floors. And if you are on thick carpet which might be resisting your wand movement, you can simply dial back the suction setting so that it moves with less resistance. Very user friendly and consumer-centric.
** The canister is not only gracefully beautiful (I got the Mango Red), but the wheels glide effortlessly on every surface, including deep pile carpet. All three of the small wheels swivel independently within cleverly designed, larger molded casings, so no matter where you go with the wand, the canister follows you effortlessly like a shadow, without any need to tug on it, as if it were a Great Dane on a leash:) The canister can glide flat on the floor, or it can sit upright and stationary, since the back of the canister is a flat surface (for when you want to use the wand for things up higher and don't want the canister rolling freely). This feature also allows upright storage in a closet, taking up minimal space. The main power switch is located at the back of the canister and is a foot-activated switch, about the size of a cell phone. Next to that switch is a "same size" switch which activates the self winding power cord, to retract it back into the unit. The other nice feature of the canister is an ergonomic handle on the front, which allows you to easily carry it in one hand, while carrying the wand in the other. Unbelievably, this canister is so light that you don't even feel that you are carrying anything. It only weighs 8 pounds. And the wand and head assembly is also around 8 pounds, so when you are carting the whole affair, from room to room, or up and down stairs, you are only dealing with 16 pounds total, but equally split between two hands. Worth its minimal weight, in gold.
** There are several options for filters. The hinged access door to the inside of the canister is easily opened, which reveals the vacuum bag (which some might view as a negative, since many vacuums today, use a reusable, removable plastic debris container). The vacuum bag readily snaps into a bag cradle, with absolutely no effort. And then when the door of the canister is closed, it automatically seats into the opening of the vacuum bag. So there is no struggling with slipping the bag over a vacuum tube and securing with elastic bands. Its all automatic. Inside the canister is a small pre-filter, which protects the motor from debris, and then there is a larger exhaust filter which is a 4" x 8", single sheet filter, under a removable screen, which keeps particulates from re-entering the room. The unit comes with this basic particulate filter installed, with the option to remove it in favor of an included "plastic framed" HEPA 13 filter for those with allergies, in need of a higher level of filtration (this filter resembles the air filters on most automobiles). The dust bag appears to be relatively small, so I do not yet know how much vacuuming I can do before replacing it. It folds over on itself inside the canister and may expand more than it appears at first glance. The canister also has a sensor on top, which alerts you, when the bag is full, and on the border of not being able to accept any more debris. The bags for this unit are G/N type bags.
** The retractable cord is 19' long so it gives plenty of room to operate from a single wall outlet, versus running around the room to find the next convenient spot to plug it in. And when the product description states it has an operational range of 29', what they are telling you, is that you have the 19' of cord, from wall outlet to canister, and then you have an additional 10' of reach, with the wand itself. So you can go out as far as 29' from a wall outlet, to reach the limits of the vacuum head. This vacuum is rated at 1200 watts, and with the rotational brush activated, it pulls 12 amps, according to the manufacturer info.
** Attachments are pretty straight forward and typical. Three small attachments are a small vacuum head, a round brush head and a crevice tool, all of which store on a bracket, which snaps to the base of the vacuum hose, where it enters the canister. Besides the rotary brush vacuum head, there is also a large hardwood floor attachment, which you can switch out. It features soft bristle brushes around the perimeter of the head, which have varying heights of bristles, so it doesn't just push dirt out of the way, when vacuuming, and allows debris to enter the suction zone of the head.
** This is so minimal that it is probably not worth considering in the general scheme of things. But you have to replace vacuum bags, which may be a turn off for some. But the tremendous utility of this vacuum in all other areas, offsets this minor inconvenience. And the only other negative about this feature is that the replacement bags are more expensive. For the genuine Meile bag kit purchase, you will spend around 18 bucks on the replacement kit, which includes 3 bags, as well as replacements for the other filters inside the canister (main motor filter, standard exhaust filter, and a replacement HEPA 13 filter). So, on the surface it may seem like a lot, but one has to consider the cost of the other filters which come with the bag kit.
** The only other minor negative is that this vacuum is not going to store as compactly as many other vacuums, since the hose and wand have to be dealt with. The canister itself, takes up only 10" x 8" of floor space, in a closet, and stands 18" tall, when set upright. The telescoping wand (collapsed to its shortest length) with the vacuum head attached is about 34" long, end to end, but can be broken down even further, by detaching the vacuum head (taking it down to 22" without the head). The head can easily be stored on a shelf, out of the way. The other component, for storage, is the flexible vacuum hose which has the integrated handle at one end, which is 6' long and could be draped over a bracket in a closet, thus shortening its needed clearance to 36", when hanging. Maybe these dimensions will help those who may have limited storage space.
All in all, this is one of the finest, well made, and well thought out products which I have had the good fortune of experiencing. So, if the price does not deter you, I can assure you that the quality and function will easily justify itself, in this German engineered, and manufactured product. This is obviously a product which had a lot of "hands on" involved in the engineering phase, translating functions into true usability. I can't find a flaw in its design, at any step of the way. Kudos.
My major complaint is that the unit's wheels do NOT roll across the floor/carpet very well. The weird angle at which the hose comes out of the base (exits from the top) unit prevents it from following behind you easily as you vacuum. It keeps tipping over so I end up carrying it in my other hand. It's a source of frustration to an otherwise wonderful product.
It is packed in a small carton and is almost ready to plug in and use. I read the manual, which is refreshingly written in English and easy to follow. The directions reference a set of figures that are on a fold-out at the back to the manual. Setup is easy, with the exception of the HEPA filter. This is an optional filter that almost entirely eliminates any dust or allergens blowing around your house as you vacuum. It took me a few minutes to remove the standard air filter and replace it with the HEPA, and activate the unique timer strip that tells you when to replace it. You can tell this is a well-engineered device, made with high quality materials. Fit and finish are excellent. The plastic is high quality, and the rugged hose attaches to a stainless steel extension wand. Yes, this is real stainless steel, solid and satin-y. The stainless wand extends to accommodate different heights. The telescoping mechanism is smooth and easy to use. Three attachments fit into a holder that clips onto the base of the hose where it attaches to the canister. The attachments are good quality, with the possible exception of the dusting brush. Our old Kenmore brush had natural bristles; the Miele's are plastic. An upholstery brush and crevice tool make up the other two attachments. The vacuum head is a powered unit that has a rotating brush that can be turned on/off via a switch near the handle of the nozzle. An optional floor brush is also included with this model. This brush can be used on hard or delicate surfaces like tile that are uneven, or walls. Again, it has plastic, not natural bristles. The head of this attachment has a nice swivel mechanism.
When I first plugged in the unit and turned it on, I thought that something was wrong. I heard a whoosh sound, but no high pitch. I thought that something must be plugging up the unit. Wrong! The motor on the Miele is powerful, yet relatively quiet. It had none of the high-pitched scream you get from cheaper vacuums. (see video) I also noticed that pushing the sweeper head through our thick piled carpet was a chore, as the suction was so great. With our Kenmore and Hoover uprights, you adjust the level of the sweeper for the various thickness of the carpets. With the Miele, you adjust the rotary power selector, which controls the speed/suction of the vacuum. Once I did this, the Miele glided through the carpet almost effortlessly.
Now, I am not the one who usually uses the vacuum, nor is my spouse. We have a professional cleaner, Dana, who has worked for us for several years. She uses a wide variety of vacuum cleaners at her various clients, and I thought she would be the best judge of the Miele's pro's and con's.
Week one trial comments:
It's so small. The telescopic wand adjusts smoothly. It doesn't have lights, but I don't need them; they just burn out. It tends to tip over if you pull it too hard, and they should have a way to make it easier to pull around, without pulling on the hose. The weight is impressive; it's like heaven. The attachment caddy must go; it gets in the way and I don't want to be picking up the tools off the floor all the time. The parquet floor brush is nice and will be great for doing the walls. The rotary knob for adjusting the speed feels a bit sloppy, since it doesn't have a definite click between settings. It may be difficult to see the settings in dim light.
Week two trial comments:
The unit rolls nicely and I don't have any more problems with it tipping over. I just pull gently and it follows me. The unit is so light, I carry it upstair with no problems. In fact, I use less energy vacuuming the floors with the Miele. I wish the cord were just a little longer. The electro-brush tool is the perfect size. I can sweep under more furniture without having to move it. It does stairs perfectly. It also picks up debris in the corners so I don't have to switch to the crevice tool. Very nicely designed vacuum. It is so quiet. I love it. It is the best vacuum I have used.
I should mention that this vacuum uses bags and filters. The bags are not your paper variety, but are soft fabric (almost like a diaper). They're about $20 for a pack of four, including replacement filters (non-HEPA). Each bag lasts about 4 months, from the reviews I read.
