Miele S7280 FreshAir

Miele’s S7 FreshAir Vacuum cleaner is specifically designed for allergy sufferers with carpeting. It includes a Universal Dusting Brush and Mattress Tool that enable allergy suffers to capture hard-to-reach dirt, dust and allergens even more thoroughly. The S7 FreshAir features a unique electrobrush that follows the contours of your floor, automatically adjusting for different carpet depths and surface coverings – providing even, consistent suction and gentle cleaning. It also includes Miele’s AirClean Sealed System, comprised of an AirClean FilterBag and HEPA AirClean Filter that captures and retains 99.9+% of dirt, dust and allergens. The S7 FreshAir vacuum features a rotary dial control with four power settings that allows you to adjust the level of suction to the type of surface being cleaned. Other conveniences include three accessories – a dusting brush, upholstery tool and crevice nozzle, and an LED headlight.

The S7 Series

The Miele S7 Series features breakthrough SwivelNeck technology that lets you steer your upright with little more than a turn of your wrist or even extend it into its unique flat-to-the-floor position. So instead of having to move furniture while cleaning, you’ll maneuver around and under it. The control and responsiveness of the S7 Series is perfectly complemented by its outstanding versatility. With an independently powered, spring-loaded roller brush, these AirClean Sealed System vacuum cleaners are capable of lifting dirt, dust and debris from the deepest pile carpets in one swift pass and then transitioning gracefully to a smooth surface, such as a polished hardwood floor. Miele’s S7 vacuums feature a 12-foot integrated flexible hose that makes cleaning upholstery, ceilings and drapery an easy task. Coupled with a long electrical cord, S7’s overall cleaning radius is 54 feet.

I've been using a Dyson DC40 for many months and have been pleased with its compact form and general utility. I will compare this Miele to it.

-The filter mechanism is the biggest differentiating factor between the Miele and Dyson and will be the deciding factor for many people.
-Miele uses 3 filters (Hepa, bag, exhaust) which are easy to remove and replace. Dyson is bagless which requires emptying of the canister, and has permanent filters that need to be washed regularly which is a dirty and time consuming (24 hour dry time) process. Thus, the Dyson requires more ongoing maintenance than the Miele.

-Both Dyson and Miele have similar, very good suction power.

-Miele detachable wand is slightly more convenient to access than the Dyson. The Miele pulls right out and you can immediately start vacuuming with it. The Dyson wand is built into the handle which means you must unlatch the wand from the handle.
-Miele wand has a full-size, built-in handle which makes it easy to grip and maneuver. Dyson wand does not have a handle.

-Very long power cord ~33ft which makes it easy to vacuum an entire room without replugging. The Dyson DC40 cord is 25ft; the DC41 is 35ft.

-Swivel neck works well and is similar to the Dyson ball. Both are extremely maneuverable.
-Controls are higher up near the handle and more conveniently located than the Dyson.
-The power cord hooks are located high on the handle which means you can wrap up the cord without bending over much. The Dyson hooks are lower which forces you to reach down near the floor.

Miele is a German company founded in 1898. They manufactured their first vacuum cleaner in 1931, and are well known for their premium appliances.

This particular Miele upright vacuum features a sealed filtration system with three separate filters and is designed for users with allergies and carpeting, along with those people concerned about improving the air quality in their environment.

There is a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter housed in the base of the machine which should last 50 hours (approximately a year) before it needs to be replaced, a dust compartment/pre-motor filter located behind the bag, and the bag itself also acts as a filter. According to the manufacturer, 99.9 % of dust is retained in the bag and is not re-released into the air/exhaust.

The dust compartment filters are included with the vacuum bags Miele Type U AirClean Bags & Filters, For S7000-S7999 UprightUpright, 4 Pack - one per box of four - should be installed at the start of each new box. The HEPA filter Miele HEPA AirClean 30 Filter requires annual replacement.

Out of the box two steps are required before use - first, push the handle into the body until a click is heard and then set the HEPA filter replacement indicator.

I vacuum the equivalent of 1500 square foot of mostly low-pile carpet a couple of times a week. I have four cats who rub, roll, and shed with everything they are worth. I've used lots of vacuums in recent years made by Hoover, Oreck, and Dyson. The last brand, which is hailed as one of the premium vacuum options, is one I would not recommend to pet owners. The Dyson Ball was a grossly overpriced unit that literally fell to pieces after three years. The Dyson did little to improve air quality. When we replaced the Dyson, my family was appalled at the dust and dirt that it had left behind. Next to the unit we replaced the Dyson with, a Hoover Platinum Collection Lightweight Bagged Upright with Canister, UH30010COM, the Miele is one of the nicest vacuum units I have used.

1) Appearance: The first thing you notice when you take the Miele out of the box is how attractive and sleek it is. When I first saw it, it reminded me a bit of NASA spaceship. While there is a substantial amount of plastic, it is obvious that the product is well-constructed.

2) Well-built: The unit is solidly built. The power cord and prong are thick and sturdy. It isn't a vacuum that will tip over with just a casual push.

3) Easy to use: When it comes time to use it, it's exceedingly simple. You have a a rotary dial that is adjusted based on the type of carpet to be cleaned. Additionally, there is a special "powerbrush" feature. If you are vacuuming crushed carpet pile, the "power brush" can be used. The handle does not adjust, and once inserted correctly, the handle does not need to be fiddled with.
