"Velvety...all romance...big, smooth tone...McKenna and his mates dare to play pretty and get away with it." -- Philadelphia Inquirer, July 1, 2001

About the Artist

Larry McKenna got his first big break in 1959 when he went on the road as a member of the saxophone section in the Woody Herman Band. His unlimited technique and beautiful soft-edged tone has graced the Al Raymond All-Star Big Band, Michel Legrand and Frank Sinatra. Because of his fertile musical mind, he is also a well-respected educator at Temple University, West Chester University, and Philadelphia Community College.

Larry Mckenna is "unfortunately" one of the last great musicians and saxaphone players to play so lyrically and produce such a beautiful sound. Having been around Philadelphia most of my life, I've had the privledge of listening to Larry in person many times. This work is just a small sampling of this man's talents and has to be one of the most beautiful cd's ever produced!

This guy is good.

I am sorry to say after my 7 years in Philly and my long love affair with the city, I never heard of him. Bill Hillgrove, the voice of the pitt Panthers, (don't hold it against him.) played this this morning on WRTI streaming as part of his Saturday morning mix, and it moved me. Larry's tone is mellow without being soft. His arrangement of the song was beautiful. I can't wait to hear the whole album. But there is no MP 3 version and the CD costs too much. Alas, the Earl has learned to wait. Can't wait to get out to SF and visit Amoeba.

Oh and by the way--Hillgrove does a really nice show. He is caught up a little too much in the fifties sort of traditionals. But he doesn't get stuck in it, and he is never schmaltzy. There is a general melodic happy feel to the show, and a respect for contemporary players, with just a touch of an edge to keep boredom away. His set this morning was strong and Larry McKenna was the highlight.

Go Temple Owls. Go WRTI--Streaming across America--the Point 90.1

Being a sax player in a professional band I an always looking for sax players to listen to to get new ideas in playing styles. A friend recommended listening to Larry Mckenna. Well I did and I really enjoy the soft sound and style of this player. Great playing style. I plan to check out more of his CD's. Great CD.
