Review

*****5 STARS - "...I would recommend this story to romance lovers everywhere. The concept of this story was so cool, the way their two careers/paths collided, but then their attraction to one another made what could have been a simple arrangement way more complicated. I'm not sure I've ever read a romance quite like this one, but I know one thing... I want more."

Only the Books For Me

****4 STARS - "Opposites attract and everything happening is a balance of oppositionforces coming together to create a story that keeps the reader on their toes...Theundeniable attraction between a story, a journalist, a war leader, a feistyaunt, and a home town diner keeps the Herbs de Provence flowing in Fiddler'sElbow."

Ms. Neely has created delightfully flawed characters—Hank Jerry and Jack Darcy—who meet in the most unlikely of circumstances: the back of a diner in Fiddler’s Elbow, Pennsylvania. A family emergency has forced Hank to leave New York and take a hiatus from troublesome career and relationship woes. Fresh out of prison, Jack is on the run, hoping to escape the clutches of former gang members. Sparks fly between Hank and Jack, but well-hidden secrets and unwelcome guests threaten to derail the budding romance. From start to finish, I enjoyed this well-paced novella, brimming with conflict and emotional intensity.

Kudos to Ms. Neely!

Fresh, vibrant writing introduces the reader to Hank and Jack--two battle scared people who have each committed everything to creating a new, better life for themselves, lives that they have dreamed of. In their fight to achieve their goals, not only do they save each other's lives, they, at great cost, save each other's dream. The strong contrast of settings--the cozy diner that we all remember and the complexity of an illegal organization--increases suspense and re-enforces the atmosphere of danger. Strong secondary characters provide normalcy that highlights the exploitation of Hank's unscrupulous editor and the sadistic cruelty of the organization. This is a fast paced, well constructed suspense story with characters you will care about.

These characters are far from the picture-perfect romantic couple. They are both flawed and come with their own sets of issues. Hank and Jack both had all these issues, but they were still good people and I appreciated that. It was very much a romantic suspense novel. Sometimes I find the suspense part lacking, but this one really lived up to my expectations.
There was a lot of sexual tension, but the author also wrote in some conversations between the h and H, which to me makes a love story more realistic. I give it 4.5, and would definitely pick up another book by this author.

Wow! What a great read! Some romance and some mystery with the two main characters. Turning the pages just to find out what Hank and Jack's secrets really were. Loved it! Having grown up in a small town, I loved the references to Fiddler's Elbow and the local diner. I am looking forward to seeing more from this author in the future.

A modern Nellie Bly type reporter, Hank takes on assignments that most sensible women would avoid. When things go south for her in NYC, she’s called back to her small hometown when her aunt lands in the hospital. Running a restaurant isn’t her usual line of work but one early morning it does land her in a position to do yet another potentially dangerous article when a wounded man stumbles to her café’s rear door asking for help. Jack is not only a dangerous man, he wants her to tell his story, expose the gang he was once the war leader for so that he can shed his past and live a life of his own choosing. The trick will be both of them surviving the gang head determined to kill the story – and possibly them – while falling in love. A MIGHTY GOOD MAN by Rebecca Neely.

A Mighty Good Man is more than a romance. Full of suspense and real life situations, the story pulls the reader inside the characters and immediate bonds occur. Hank and Jack are believable, lovable, and true to their characters. From the first page, I was hooked. Twists and turns kept me reading and thinking about life in a gang long after the final pages. Great research and flawless writing make me want to read more from this author.

Hank Jerry is a journalist who returns home to help care for her Aunt Henry after a heart attack. What she finds is a gang banger, Jack, on the run, a chance to reclaim her career with his astonishing story, and . . .well, you have to read the story. Threats to the staff in her Aunt's diner and to herself propel her to choose between her lover in New York and Jack. Trusting is risky for her, but can she trust this man? Rebecca Neely has crafted a heart-warming tale. Well worth the read.

The story of Hank (female) and Jack.

Hank has returned to the small town to help out her aunt's restaurant while her aunt is in the hospital. Normally, Hank is a freelance writer (magazines, etc.).

Jack is a man on the run. Fresh out of prison, he's being chased by men from his former gang. He's done with that life and wants to start fresh.
The two meet when he is literally running away (on feet) as she is outside the restaurant taking a smoke break. He's limping and bloody, and she makes a split decision to help him.

Turns out, Jack is a good cook, so hiding him in the kitchen as the cook is a great idea.

When Jack figures out that he's read some of her articles, he wants her to write his story. She agrees, eventually.

And of course, there is chemistry! The lines of work and pleasure blur.

Quite a few action sequences in this story.

I generally liked the main characters, but the 'bad guys' were cliché. One 'thinks he's smart' guy partnered with a bumbling idiot, and some boss that makes demands over the phone. The talk of love so quick was also a little unbelievable, as is an entire town (including close family and friends) demanding the couple stays together after approximately 2 days of knowing Jack - and knowing he's fresh out of prison with gang-affiliations.

This is why I am rating the story as 3.5-4 stars. If you can get out of your head and not think about tv shows and such about gang activity, you'll enjoy it. The love scene was pretty hot!
