I have been using this intercom unit for 5 years now and it works great! I have mine over 600' and its clear. I however did take RG6 cable and run my antenna on outside unit about 150' closer to the house and it works every time. So between inside base unit and outside extended antenna there is easy 400' wireless. I live out in the country so RF signals are low and i have no interference. I am also an using power from my opener and not using the AA batteries.

My driveway gates are 400 linear feet from the house. The signal only makes it about half way down the driveway. If I stand halfway down my driveway and talk through the intercom, it works great. In my house, completely worthless.

The only thing more worthless than this intercom is the customer support. First call, send me to three different people, none of which could help. Last person sends me to Linear Corp customer service, the people who actually make the intercom, they can't help. Talk to four different people at Linear, they don't even know that they make it and send me back to GTO support.

GTO support person who is supposed to specialize in RF intercoms doesn't even know that they make a 900 megahertz unit. Not one of the countless people I spoke to have any clue whatsoever how I could increase the signal strength or the antenna strength of the two units so that they can communicate over the 400 feet they are supposed to. Tells me "people usually complain and then we just tell them to send the intercom back". Really, that's your tech service? Dumbest customer service answer I have ever received form anyone ever.

So you are basically telling me that the unit doesn't work as advertised, people have complained, and your answer to solving their problem is to have them send it back with zero suggestions as to how they should go about communicating with people who will be stuck sitting outside the gates.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

The lousy functionality is only surpassed by the remarkably poor customer service.

I would have given it zero stars if I could

I have been using this system for about a year. I use it to control access to a security gate(man-gate) in front of my home. The gate is located about 50 feet from the intercom unit. The intercom unit plugs into house power. The gate unit works off of a small 12-volt rechargable battery. I use an inexpensive solar cell array I purchased from Harbor Freight to recharge the battery. The alternative is to use the provided charger which requires 110 house power. The system works ok but one issue has made it difficult for visitors and me to use. The chief issue is that the intercom does not release the gate latch. It merely makes it possible for a visitor to press any key on the touchpad to release the lock. So you can't open the lock for someone. You have to push a botton and then tell the visitor to press any key over the intercom. Also the intercom does not enable the system unless someone calls on the intercom. So again you can't use the intercom to egress. Consequently you need a key or another button to open the gate from the inside. You will need some basic mechanical and electrical (handyman)skills to install the system. If this is not you than pay someone to do it for you. Also the volume at the keypad is good but the volume at the intercom is low making it difficult to hear your visitor.

I bought it thinking that I could open the gate without someone paging the unit. So it will let them in but wont let them out unless your gate opens automatically upon exit. I just use it if I go jogging or something. At the time of purchase, my wired button wasn't working correctly.

*Update* 6/3/2011, I just wanted to add, I don't have any problem with range. It works over 400ft at my location but still isn't worth the money however, I do like the keypad features especially if I need someone to have temporary access.

Over an unobstructed 100 feet distance, the intercom is clear in the house on the ground floor and upstairs. The concrete walls of the basement interferes with radio transmission. It does the job and alerts me of visitors at the gate.

Works flawlessly! Of course, the base station is only 125' away from the keypad. I set this unit up to be hard-wired for both power and to unlock the Gate (you can use 4x AA batteries for power and you can have it wirelessly unlock your gate).

If you need more range for the intercom, the instructions outline how to extend the antenna using RG6 cable.

The instructions are poorly written for powering this unit by the gate controller (not with AA batteries). It should state to connect this directly to the gate controller's battery (and that being non-polarity specific). It doesn't mention you can use the AC power from the gate controller, but on the silk-screen of the printed circuit board, it does AC or DC on there. I would highly recommend connecting this unit to the gate controller's battery instead of the AC charging circuit, just in case you have a power outage (assuming you're using the wall transformer to trickle charge your gate controller's battery), the keypad will still be powered off the battery.

I'm worried that the keypad housing will deteriorate over time being out in the Hawaii sun. We'll see how long this unit will last.
