Hi. You found me! Yes, I am the Mike Riley you have been looking for, the one who has been sailing around the world for the last 40 years and finally got around to writing about it. Not that I like writing about myself, kinda boring after a bit, don't you think?
All my writing orbits around the sea. Hey, what can I say, it is what I know. 8 of my books are non-fiction, 2 are fiction, have another fiction in the oven that is going to be great and 3 non-fiction that I add to when I am in the mood.
My wife says I am always in the mood, wait a minute, I didn't mean it that way!
I'm on my third true Circumnavigation of the globe. (A true circle means you start and end with the same boat. After all, the boat is the one doing all the work. We are just going along for the ride, kinda.) I don't know why I am going around again. Not that I have ever intended to circle. I sail to one country then another. We hear about a place further to the west that sounds cool. After a while, it is too far to go back, or rather it is easier and faster to continue to the west.
I guess I'm not a Hero if I do this more or less accidentally.
My wife thinks that I approach hero hood on occasion, but then she is prejudiced. I met her in the wilds of Papua new Guinea where she was teaching grade school on an island that has since blown up in a huge volcanic eruption. Good thing she jumped on board, huh?
Our son used to think I was a hero when he was younger, now that he is in his middle twenties, he just thinks that I am old.
Not that I feel old. Why just yesterday----
Wait a minute. That is what old people say. They always talk about yesterday. Young people talk about tomorrow. OK. I can do that.
Why just yesterday I was thinking that today I was going to think about my future- whether I will have one or not! OK, OK. I'm old. Don't rub it in.
My present boat, Beau Soleil, is younger than I. She was built in 1976. I was out of college by then. (Are you picking up all these hints?) Wait a minute, I don't have a thing about my age. I really don't.
Except when I am up late at night on anchor watch in a dying hurricane in New Zealand. Not that it is a problem. Opua where we are, is a safe little port in the Bay of Islands in the north of North Island, NZ. We are here for the summer and are going back north to Fiji, New Caledonia and Vanuatu come May.
In the mean time I am loading my books, or most of them, up into the web. Now is your chance, Really! Take a look! I haven't led a boring life, not by a long shot. I sure don't write boring books. Take a look!
