Now on 4K UHD—Michael Curtiz’s bitter cocktail of maternal sacrifice and all-American ambition, featuring an iconic performance by Joan Crawford
Product Description
Melodrama casts noirish shadows in this portrait of maternal sacrifice from Hollywood master Michael Curtiz. Joan Crawford’s iconic performance as Mildred, a single mother hell-bent on freeing her children from the stigma of economic hardship, solidified Crawford’s career comeback and gave the actor her only Oscar. But as Mildred pulls herself up by her bootstraps, first as an unflappable waitress and eventually as the well-heeled owner of a successful restaurant chain, the ingratitude of her materialistic firstborn (a diabolical Ann Blyth) becomes a venomous serpent’s tooth, setting in motion an endless cycle of desperate overtures and heartless recriminations. Recasting James M. Cain’s rich psychological novel as a murder mystery, this bitter cocktail of blind parental love and all-American ambition is both unremittingly hard-boiled and sumptuously emotional.

The Movie itself, A MUST! Incredible oscar winning performance from Joan Crawford looking at beautiful as ever, and in typical joan fashion, out acting every one, amazing. Great supporting cast as well. Amother who does everything and anything for her daughters.... well ALMOST anything...!
Thank you Criterion!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2017While it's definitely a period piece, the Bluetooth version is well done and beautifully restored. It shimmers, and I noticed many details in they print that I had never noticed before. All the actors are at the top of their game, and it's interesting to see that the characters all have flaws that prevent anyone from fully sympathizing with them.
The Criterion extras include a fascinating, slightly bawdy interview Joan Crawford had with David Frost and a balanced, comprehensive TCM documentary on Joan Crawford's career. These helped put some perspective on this film, Crawford's overall career and her personal demons, along with the grace notes and professionalism that defined most of her career. The Ann Blyth interview is fun, but the audio quality is not ideal.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2017I'm just going to go ahead and give a 5 star rating for the release and not write a review on the movie.
The picture is great and the extra's are great. 5 stars all the way.
I can say that I didn't particularly love the movie. I had never seen it till I purchased this copy. I bought it because I am starting to watch 'film noir' movies and this one was ranked as one of the best. However it is not exactly what I imagined. What I was looking for was more of a crime/detective drama....not a family drama. I'd rate the movie itself as a 4 star movie but the presentation by Criterion is 5 stars all the way. You have all the extra's anyone can want.
So....bottom line....my 5 star rating is for the release.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2017Great film, and a great release! I wish there were more supplemental features, I had seen a few of them on prior releases. Picture quality of the Bluray is fantastic but, as with most older films, I am not convinced that it's a worthwhile upgrade from the DVD. That said, I am happy to have the Bluray version.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2023This movie was made before I was born, and I was hesitant about purchasing it because it was in Black and
white. Once I started viewing could not stop it certainly deserved the Oscars.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017When a mother sacrifices everything for her daughter, most people would find that noble. But if that daughter is selfish, manipulative, scheming and down right no good well a lot of things can go wrong. That in essence is the story of "Mildred Pierce"(1945) one of the most fascinating portraits of maternal self-sacrifice ever brought to the screen. This Joan Crawford melodrama has been one of the most requested titles for upgrade to Blu-ray and the wait is finally over. Criterion has now brought "Mildred Pierce" to Blu-ray for the first time and the results are very impressive. According to the liner notes from the enclosed booklet: "This new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution from the 35 mm original nitrate camera negative. Some sequences, including the entire last reel of the film were scanned from a 35 mm nitrate fine-grain master and a 35 mm safety fine-grain master. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices and warps were manually removed". Although Criterion has done it's usual exceptional job in restoring this classic film(Bitrate: 31.98) it's not perfect. The image tends to fluctuate at times with some scenes appearing overly bright and at times even harsh that some viewers may find distracting. Those complaints aside, this is another impressive Blu-ray presentation from Criterion. Directed by Michael Curtiz(one of the most underrated directors in film history), "Mildred Pierce" is told in flashback with Curtiz handling the story skillfully framing it around a murder that opens the picture. The B & W cinematography(Oscar nominated) by Ernest Haller is really highlighted now on Blu-ray with both interiors and exteriors showing excellent detail. Close-ups of Crawford are a especially prominent showing all the pain and suffering she endures during the coarse of the film. Joan Crawford is outstanding in her Oscar winning role despite the fact that she was not director Curtiz first choice. He wanted Bette Davis(who turned him down) and then Barbara Stanwyck(who wasn't available) before finally accepting Crawford(both director and star fought often during the filming). As good as Crawford is in her role, Ann Blyth nearly steals the picture as her selfish ungrateful daughter Veda. Only 16, Blyth gives an incredible performance matching Crawford scene for scene. Her character has no redeeming qualities and no one will feel the least bit sorry for her at the end of the film. Crawford and Blyth get great support from Jack Carson, Zachary Scott, Bruce Bennett and Eve Arden. "Mildred Pierce" is 111 minutes(Aspect ratio: 1.37:1) and only contains the following subtitle: English SDH. The Audio(English LPCM) is crystal clear and free of any noise artifacts(hiss, hum, crackle etc.). Special features include the following: (1) An interview with film critics Molly Haskell and Robert Polito(23 min.); (2) A TCM documentary on Joan Crawford, the Ultimate Movie Star(87 min); (3) A 1970 interview with Joan Crawford by from "The David Frost Show"(15 min); (4) A 2006 Q & A with actress Ann Blyth(24 min); (5) A "Today" show interview with author James M. Cain(10 min) and the Original Theatrical Trailer. There is an informative enclosed booklet by Imogen Smith about the making of the film. The Blu-ray disc itself is housed in Criterion's standard transparent Blu-ray case. "Mildred Pierce" is a compelling film that marks a high point in the film career of legendary actress Joan Crawford and newcomer Ann Blyth. It should be a welcome addition to any home film library and comes very highly recommended.
