Editorial Reviews
Here, performing music written by and associated with Miles Davis, vocalist Giacomo Gates proves, as he did with his historic Gil Scott-Heron recording, that great music is not bound to the instrument on which it was created. Though there are notable contributions from pianist John Di Martino, laying down some tasty changes, and Freddie Hendrix sounding quite Miles-like in his muted utterances this disc is all about Giacomo Gates joyously creating music both carefully rehearsed and on the spot while all the time spreading that joy to his audience.

Throughout the CD, I enjoyed hearing Giacomo Gates fully immersed in the spirit of Miles Davis. Gates clearly shows that he is a true Miles Davis fan and also brings in some of his own adventurous flavor to the songs. This makes the songs sound classic and fresh at the same time. The CD includes some of my old favorites like "Four" and "So What", along with some very enjoyable romantic tunes like "You're My Everything" and "I Fall in Love Too Easily". The mixing with the horn and guitar playing was excellent as well.

Since my parents still have CD players, this was a perfect gift for their listening enjoyment.

Our family has seen Gates in performance several times and we appreciate his interpretation and his phrasing. Truly a unique voice and a unique style. Love his take on Miles Davis tunes on this recording.

If you like the tone of his voice then you will love this recording from him. Vocals on top of straight ahead jazz combo. All very competently done. Seems to be well recorded though I have no listened on my main stereo. Again, if you dig his style (a man's voice), then this or any of his CDs could be a good experience for you. He has a recent recording of Gil Scott-Heron tunes. With the passing of Mark Murphy Giacomo may be taking the torch as the premier male jazz vocalist, though I am probably partial to Kevin Mahogony. I Did NOT buy from Amazon this time, but wrote a quick review when I deleted the item from my Wish List.
