Chap 1-3: These chapters go into a fair amount of detail concerning the Marine Corps M40A1, and Army M24 sniper weapon systems. A light discussion of their standard procedures, testing requirements, and some of the equipment each group uses. There is also a discussion of police snipers, along with some examples of their deployments, and how their programs developed a little differently from the military.
Chap 4: Discusses some of the various sniper weapon systems. Different scopes, mounting options, and stock configurations are described and the author concludes that the M40A1 configuration remains his favorite.
Chap 5-8: These chapters cover just about anything a person would want to know about terminal, interior, and exterior ballistics. Tables and charts, along with Mike Lau's expert knowledge on this subject describe in great detail the effects of these on accuracy and damage. The development and advantages of key cartridges is also discussed.
Chap 9-12: Here is where the reader gets to learn a little more about the mechanics of shooting. The book takes a turn here from the in depth descriptions of the technical aspects of bullet, barrel, stock and scope designs and their effects of each on accuracy. This section is really what I was looking for in the book. Details and guidance are offered on range estimation, shooting from angles, and reading and adjusting for wind. A chapter on shooting at moving targets rounds out this section. There is a lot of good information here and made the purchase worthwhile.
Chap 13-14: These two chapters were a very pleasant surprise. Chap 13 contains the best information and the most clear instruction on filling out and using a Data Book. The author provided many blank forms as well as examples of completed entries. By photocopying the pages, a novice shooter could create a very professional DOPE book and understand very well how to use it. I thought Chap 14 was amazing. It walks you through some real world engagements and shows you the calculations and considerations that would need to be made in a real world environment.
Chap 15 and Appendices: The last chapter is about Sniper Sustainment Training, but it is mostly all photos with some captions. It is interesting and adds to the book, but there is no instruction concerning the topic. The appendices are good though. They give tables and charts for Ballistics, Leading Moving Targets, and Wind Drift Tables.
This is a good book. A great book in fact on precision shooting. But that's where it ends.I do recommend it with some caveats. There is no information or instruction on other aspects of sniping such as field craft and supplementary gear. No discussion of tactics, strategy, or operating in a hostile environment. It is a great supplement to
The Ultimate Sniper: An Advanced Training Manual for Military and Police Snipers which discusses some of the things left out of this book.
A well written easy to comprehend book for the most logger head of shooters. If Lou don't tighten your group, take up golf! If he helps, take up shooting golf balls!
