I bought this item based on the positive reviews. The ammo box I received was beat to hell, not just used or weathered (nothing wrong with that) but in an overall poor condition. I could have let that go, but the worst part is the letters you see in the item pictured were carelessly spray painted over in black, it serves no purpose as it makes the ammo box look worse and doesn't actually cover up the lettering. The paint smell is so strong I had to put the box outside.

This spring I'll clean it up, sand it down and repaint it. I don't like writing negative reviews but fairly disappointed - I really don't need another item on my to do list. Not worth the return shipping cost.

So first, I would like to say that the boxes arrived quickly and they are ammo boxes! These are the only pros I can list about this purchase.
Cons: rusted, dented, hinges are hard to move. Not what I was expecting for the cash. I am planning to grind them and repairing them myself so I don't just throw them in the garage. Luckily I have the tools to repair them...but I shouldn't have to for the price! Buyer beware!

There are several pages on Amazon for .50 and .30 cal ammo cans, I purchased two of the ammo cans described on this page. Both of the cans I received were in excellent condition, no rust whatsoever, and only minor scratching on the bottom of the cans. My cans appear that they may have been repainted, which I have no problem with.

Anyone writing reviews complaining of black spray paint on the ammo can, or that the ammo can does not specifically say .50 or any other caliber on the side of the can (such as the 5.56mm displayed on the product page) has no idea what they are talking about. Soldiers in the field will spray paint empty cans black to mark them as empty. A soldier in the heat of battle would need to know which cans have ammo in them, and black spray paint marking empty cans makes identifying a can as empty quick and simple. Also, the .50 cal (or .30 cal for that matter) description of the can refers to the SIZE of the can, not necessarily which caliber ammo was stored in it. Although this size ammo can was initially made for the .50 BMG round, other ammunition is also stored in these same size cans, and the cans may be labelled as such.

I bought this ammo can with the hope that I could use it to keep ammunition dry. When the can arrived, it was visibly rusted on both the outside and the INSIDE. There was also water pooled on the inside of the can, causing the seam around the bottom to rust. The can was difficult to open as the lid was stuck to the rubber gasket. I suspect the gasket had slightly rotted.

I understand that this can is used, but I was expecting the wear to be limited to scratches and dents. The can was in no condition to fulfill its purpose of storing ammunition, and keeping it dry. To add insult to injury, the seller applied a restocking fee to the return (as to imply that this item will be resold). I ended up getting a brand new ammo can for $17 locally. Don't waste your money.

These ammo cans are often too abused. I'm all about recycling, but it's too much of a gamble that you will get a usable product. I'm not sure why people buy used and abused when you can buy new for almost the same price instead. New ones are not as easy to find as the used ones but they are certainly available. URLs are not allowed in amazon reviews so please read the comment section of this review and I will post links.

These are mainly useful for storing ammo, since they are air tight and keep moisture out. However you can use them to store other things you don't want getting wet or exposed to oxygen. This one came with the cool yellow letters making it look totally awesome. It's not going to be with out its scratches but that shouldn't matter for something like this.

The only negative about this is the price. I know for a fact you can get these for under 10 dollars at any gun show or Army Surplus store. I bought it on-line out of laziness. If you can avoid the laziness go out and get it at an actual store instead and save your self a couple of bucks.

I'm sure the seal was great, but this can was pure garbage, If you want a can full of rust, that wasn't even cleaned out before shipped, this is for you! Seriously seller, would it have killed you to clean it out?

I have purchased these cans on Amazon many times. Each one has been in good condition. These came very wet, and with mildew. It is taking me a while to clean out the smell. I've had them two weeks, and still have them outside airing out. I hope they are more careful with any other orders they receive.
