The P-51 is the larger version of the P-38 and was often used by mess hall cooks to open the big trays and large cans of chow. The P-51 is a full 2in long. The added length affords more leverage and doesn't require as much thumb pressure to use. Some prefer them over the P-38s because a P-51 will open cans much easier and faster and will last much longer than the P-38. We recommend having one in every car, on every key-ring and included in every emergency survival kit. Pack of 4.

In my video, I demonstrate how to use the can opener, as it's a simple procedure -- but it's still the case, as with any tool, that you need do need to know what you're doing.
I keep these can openers in all my various emergency and survival kits. Note that there are various sizes of these can openers. Personally, I prefer the larger ones just because they fit in my hands a bit better and offer a tad more leverage.
This product was not given to me as part of any promotion. I bought it after doing some comparison shopping and this review is entirely the result of my own opinions and use of the product.
This is a keychain-sized folding can opener, that has been issued to US servicemen for ages. As far as I know, the military has made two versions of folding can openers, and this one is slightly larger, and easier to use than the other one.
This is the genuine USA made, military version. They are great to take camping, or to have in an emergency bag. They take up next to no space, weigh next to nothing, yet will open any tin can I have ever tried them on.
Bottom line: If you want a tiny can opener to keep in your emergency supplies or to take backpacking, the P-51 is a good choice. Just don't expect it to open more than a few cans.
- It's small, but not as small as the tiny P-38. The extra leverage provided by the 51mm arm is worth a few extra grams.
- It opens cans. I opened several cans with minimal difficulty, once I got the hang of it.
- My big hangup is the little hook cut into the side edge of the opener. It "grabs" the corner of the can and acts as a fulcrum for the lever handle. After the fourth or fifth can, it bent and no longer hooked into the can's lip. I was able to bend it back into place with pliers, but it bent again with the next can. In my opinion, this makes the P-51 disposable.
I hope you found this review useful.
This really is meant for camping, hiking or survival type events and activities. This is really not built to be used in a kitchen home or professional as the opening a single can takes a decent amount of effort and time which in a camping or survival situation is fine considering the almost non-existent weight added to a backpack
Pros: Lightweight, small, effective, large enough to fit in your fingers without problems (I have large hands)
Cons: Not super durable, can not be kept in a pocket or on a key chain,
All in all I am very satisfied with this product. There were no surprises the can opener does just that; open cans. It is not a very expensive product so it is no surprise it is made of inexpensive materials and not built to be used as a homes primary can opening method. I also prefer these P-51 to the P-38's, which are smaller. The P-51 is an excellent size at not to big to be annoying but definitely large enough to be functional.
