Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making it Work at Work 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
As management ages and prepares to work longer than previous generations and Millennials join companies at steady rate, companies are suffering through tension and dissonance between Millennials and Boomers, and realizing that they can't just wait for management to age out to fix it. Finding productive ways to work across the generation gap is essential, and the organizations that do this well will have significant strategic advantages over those that don't. Millennials & Management: The Essential Guide to Making It Work at Work addresses a very real concern of large and small businesses nationwide: how to motivate, collaborate with, and manage the millennial generation, who now make up almost 50% of the American workforce. The key is to change Boomer attitudes from disbelief and derision to acceptance and respect without giving up work standards. Using real world examples, author Lee Caraher gives leaders data-driven steps to take to co-create a productive workplace for today and tomorrow.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2014This is a must read for anyone who plans on having a job where they manage people and want to remain relevant in today's work force.
As a woman in her forties in a management role, I had a joke with my other executives about using the term "millenials" as a put down and it often came with an eye roll too. But I knew that this attitude needed to change so I could work most effectively with my team and produce quality work for my company.
This book helped give me not only guidelines and ways to help with managing millenials, but also made me feel not alone because clearly dealing with this amazing group of talented workforce is something a lot of people need to learn.
I'm so glad I made the investment in this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2014I've now shared Lee Caraher's book MILLENNIALS & MANAGEMENT with three friends. It's a super, easy-to-read guide to both being a better manager and being a better employee. Caraher's book is direct and no-nonsense, which I loved. This is a practical reference guide with none of the business speak or mumbo jumbo found in other business books. Read it and share it with your millennial and non-millennial staff. The best thing is that Caraher quickly moves beyond generational differences to get at what really matters--building a stronger business, inspiring your team, and in loving fashion, being a better person. When's the last time you got that from a biz guide?
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2015There is a lot of junk out there about managing younger employees, but this is the most practical and entertaining book I’ve found on developing and retaining Millennials –or Gen-Ys, pick your label. Ignoring the goofy title, you come away recognizing the danger of buying into common myths that have grown up around this new generation of workers. (E.g. “Millennials are entitled and don’t work hard.”) It is so easy -- and unproductive -- to generalize about a generation. At the same time, Caraher doesn’t sugar coat the challenges of working with young employees who may have been conditioned since grade school that they deserve a trophy just for showing up. If you’re looking for specific tactics to improve the performance of your Millennial workforce, this book is an excellent investment.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2014Millennials & Management is a must-read for anyone managing and leading in business today. It's like a secret decoder ring to unlock the mysteries of the Millennial mindset. As a COO and corporate executive it's critical to me to know how to engage with and get the most out of my team. The book gave me a deep understanding of the motivational strategies of Millennials, and from this context I now understand much better how to manage my millennial staff. I appreciate the practical advice and illustrative anecdotes that reveal how to work effectively with millennials - how to give acknowledgement, how to be clear when giving direction, and how to work with the different expectations regarding hierarchy, communication, access and transparency. Thank you, Lee, for bringing clarity and insights that will give me an opportunity to become a more effective leader.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2014While many may assume this book is for managers only, they should take a second look at its title. Lee Caraher’s true gift stems from her insight into both managers (typically older) as well as Millennials, revealing their respective viewpoints, concerns, assumptions and expectations in the workplace. Her prescription calls for shared responsibility, through a compassionate yet professional approach to office communication, team performance and career development. Caraher serves up zingy quotes, real-life, often humorous workplace anecdotes and handy “Do’s and Don’ts” checklists in each chapter, for both employee levels. Shrewd yet jaunty, Millennials & Management offers cogent, step-by-step guidance to creating big-picture solutions in multi-generational workplaces.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2014Not hiring millennials here, just raising them. If you've got kids looking for jobs now, or in the near future, get them Caraher's debrief on how they can best succeed in working with the boomers that are hiring. Her concise, entertaining read examines today's employment landscape, and analyzes the most common complaints about, as well as the unique objectives of, our 20-somethings at work. Most important, she provides practical tips and her own tested tools to cross the generational divide. My college kids can expect to find Caraher's guide in their stockings this year!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2014I guess I'm too old to relate to the Millenial generation, let alone lead a bunch of em. At least that's what I thougt. This book provided lots of useful background information on what motivates this generation, what positive experiences and feedback they seek. All laid out in a comprehensive approach. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2014Well this is a little redundant - but since Amazon asked me, I'll tell you that the response and feedback I've gotten from readers has been very positive -- I'm humbled to say that so many people have been able to take what is on the page and put it into action right away. That was my goal -- to write the most practical, helpful, use-it-right-now advice for employees, managers and leaders of all ages.
