What is Emulsifying Wax?

Emulsifying Wax is an essential ingredient used for making lotions, cream as well as many other cosmetic & beauty products. Think of it as a glue that will hold YOUR own recipe together. We have all seen how oil will always separate from a mixture almost instantly after sitting for a while you can clearly see that small balls of oil floating. The Milliard Brand Emulsifying wax is what you need to hold the mix together, especially if mixing in essential oils.
Lotions and creams are created from a mixture of water and oil. Without Emulsifying wax you can be sure that the mix won’t hold as intended.

How Does it Work?

Emulsifiers actually work on a molecular level, by attracting both water and oil to different sites at the same time. Water is a polar material. Things that like water are also called polar materials. Polar materials are also called hydrophilic. Hydrophilic materials are water-loving materials. Non-polar materials like olive oil are hydrophobic. Hydrophobic means water fearing. An emulsifier has a hydrophilic portion and a hydrophobic portion. This essentially means that it can effective bind both water and oils. It means that some structures of the emulsifier attract oil, while others soak up water like a sponge. Each part traps the liquid keeping it from breaking free to separate. As an added bonus, because the oil remains mixed with the water, the wax actually helps the oil penetrate the skin, thereby replacing lost moisture.

This product arrived yesterday so I was excited to get going with it today. First thing, they say it is sourced from a natural vegetable source, but fail to tell us what. Why not? Tell us what the heck you're selling here. Second, there are no directions on the package. I followed the ONE guildline here on their Amazon page of using 3-6% or something. I used 5%. By the next morning, my lotion was already separating!!!!! I decided to make a second batch of lotion this morning, so I upped it to 10% to see if it helped, and this time I noticed it separating out AS I was scooping the lotion into the container!!! Pretty sure an "emulsifier" is supposed to NOT let that happen. I'm so disappointed with this product already. I'll be shopping for another one, and will ultimately end up throwing this crap in the trash and accepting it as money lost. I'm super disappointed, since I had such high hopes for it.
(In this picture I'd tried 10% because the former 5% didn't work. This lotion was made literally 30 minutes ago)

Update: So its been a little over a weak and I have figured out a few recipes using this wax, which actually came out amazingly! The trick is to melt it with the oils, then heat both the oils and liquids to the same temperature and stir consistently while its cooling. If you notice it is not totally smooth, then just reheat the mixture while stirring until more liquid again and it combines better. This may have been my mistake the first time I used it.

I received this emulsifying wax this morning, and may I say, very quick shipping, two days with prime. I usually use organic beeswax for my homemade lotions, as I try to keep things as natural as possible, but I do like the results with emulsifying wax much better, when it comes to certain homemade products. I find that beeswax works much better with lip balms, salves, and ointments. Emulsifying wax gives me better results in my homemade lotions, creams and butters. I used these beads in a homemade whipped body cream, as soon as my daughter went down for her afternoon nap! They melted down easily and the wax was easy to work with as well. I'm glad I was able to find a natural wax, that is also free of GMO ingredients. You don't need much, so I purchased the small bag to try this brand. I really like the quality of this emulsifying wax, my cream came out great! I also like the fact that the wax beads come in a resealable bag. After opening I then store the bag in a ziploc freezer bag, and keep it in my wooden bakers rack cabinet with other supplies. It's cool, dry and dark in there, which I find is best for storing emulsifying wax. I definitely recommend this brand of emulsifying wax to anyone looking for high quality emulsifying beads for their homemade products. Oh and it has no scent!!! Awesome!!!

This product was just what I needed, but takes some diligence to mix it in well. I made hand scrub to give to friends as a Christmas gift, but a few hours after packaging the sugar scrub, I noticed that the layers (hand soap and sugar) had separated. Online blogs mentioned that adding emulsifying wax would solve this problem. The bag of wax arrives as small pellets, but no instructions were included. I went back to the Internet and learned how to melt it (I used the microwave), and after several starts, determined how much to add to keep the layers mixed (1/3 cup emulsifying wax per 32 oz. of mixed sugar scrub worked for me.) (Many websites provided specific weights (ounces) of each ingredient to use, but I didn't have a kitchen scale.) However, the packaging nor the Internet sites I found mentioned that the emulsifying wax solidifies VERY quickly (think candle wax). Therefore, once melted, you need to immediately add it to your mixture and stir quickly. Even when doing this, I found the wax would sometimes begin to solidify before I had it all mixed in. It worked better when I made a bit of a hole in the center of my scrub mix and poured the wax in there to start; otherwise, I had more wax on the side of my glass bowl than in the scrub.

I use these for face and body creams, especially when using an oil/butter combination. It did take more product than what I normally read is a good ratio, usually about 10-15% of the oil weight used, i.e. if you used 1 cup oil, you would need 1-2 tablespoons to make a firm cream. It does not leave a waxy residue when used on your skin and it breaks down extremely well and has a low melting point but stays firm at room temperatures.
