Barbara Bush was born in Rye, New York, and married George H.W. Bush in 1945. She was the First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993. She has five children, including President George W. Bush and Florida Governor Jeb Bush, and fourteen grandchildren. She is the founder of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She lives in Houston, Texas, and Kennebunkport, Maine.

I found out about this book on accident on a TV special on President Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush. This book is wonderful for everyone: it's sweet, a quick read and is filled with wonderful pictures of white house through the eyes of their (one of many) springer spaniel. If you're a dog person, or just reminiscent of days past, then you should get this book. it's a wonderful find.

President Bush, Number 41, actually recommended this book as we are also a Springer Spaniel family and dearly love this breed of dog. 41 was spot on with his assessement that this dog is energetic but wants to please and just makes a great family pet and hunting companion. It is a fun read and has lots of great pictures, offering insight into life for the First Dog and the Bush family. The seller was great at getting the product to us and "going the extra mile" (literally) to ensure we were satified.

Haven't read yet - but I love Barbara and I love dogs! I visited the George W. Bush Presidential Library and headed straight to the gift shop to buy the book and found it is out of print. Luckily I found quite a few used copies on Amazon. Will be a good educational book for my grandkids.

The Ugliest Dog in Washington? No way!

I love dogs and I also had the wonderful experience of attending a Presidential send-off at the White House during the Bush Presidency. I was standing behind a cordoned off area when Ranger (one of Millie's puppies who had grown up a bit) ran over to us. What a sweet dog! Later that afternoon, I was walking through Union Station and saw "Millie's Book" for sale. I thought it was a children's book and was going to pass on it but decided to buy it since proceeds would benefit Mrs. Bush's literacy program and I had just met one of Millie's pups.
This isn't a children's book. It's an engagingly written account of life at the White House from a dog's-eye point of view.
I was greatly amused by the photographs of President Bush letting Millie in and out and in and out! The apology letter and photograph to the gardeners for digging in the tulips was just precious. The narrative made the Bush family seem just like everyday folks who are just like the rest of us. When the dog misbehaved, she became "YOUR dog" instead of "Our dog." That's exactly the same in my own house!
This is a non-partisan book which gives you a behind the scenes look at the White House and at Presidential life. I enjoyed this light read very much.

Love this book! It is fun, witty and totally charming. What a clever way to give a personal, inside look at the White House during the George H.W. Bush presidency. I chuckle every time I think of Millie referring to President Bush as "the Prez," her ins and outs in the Oval Room, Millie's commentary on Barbara at the puppies' first shots, and the photos of Millie with dignitaries and celebrities. Marvelous that proceeds have been donated to children's literacy programs. Well done, Millie!
